It is proposed to hold the “Wiki Loves the Earth 2024” competition in Kyrgyzstan in order to popularize Wikimedia Commons and attract new participants to participate in Wikipedia, using incentive prizes and cooperation with companies.

Currently, the Kyrgyz Wikipedia has about 79,140 articles, which is significantly less than in neighboring countries, such as the Uzbek Wikipedia with 260 thousand articles and the Kazakh Wikipedia with 236 thousand. To update the Kyrgyz Wikipedia, it is proposed to use the “Wiki Loves the Earth” competition, which will attract more users and provide a flow of photographs for articles.

Experience from 2014 shows that 8,500 people from 26 countries took part in the “Vicky Loves the Earth” competition with 100,000 photographs. This competition is one of the most effective ways to popularize Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects in the Kyrgyz language.

To attract more participants, it is necessary to actively promote the competition through media companies and increase the prize fund, which will stimulate participation. It's also worth considering that many photographers are reluctant to provide their work for free, so offering incentive prizes for winners will be an important motivating factor. This competition is the first to be held in Kyrgyzstan, which makes it especially significant.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

1) Promotion of the competition and other events related to the competition on Instagram for the period from May 1 to June 30, 2024. It is important that people learn about the competition and its opportunities for publication on Wikimedia Commons and other Wikipedia platforms. This approach also appeals well to photographers who have high-quality images of the natural heritage of Kyrgyzstan, so that their photographs can be used in other wiki articles not only in the Kyrgyz language. 2) The final event of the competition “Vicky Loves the Earth 2024 in Kyrgyzstan” is scheduled for June 30. This event is important for raising the profile of the competition and its continuation in subsequent years. This is also an excellent opportunity to attract more Wikipedia users in Kyrgyz, as well as in Russian and English, including people living in Kyrgyzstan.

The project is being implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision of Kyrgyzstan. The Ministry will distribute a press release about the competition to various media and organize a trip to one of the natural heritage of Kyrgyzstan for photographers, encouraging them to participate in the competition by taking photographs on site to participate. The Ministry will also prepare a letter of gratitude for the winners of the competition.

Such event planning makes the implementation of the project successful and realistic in order to achieve the goals of the project making it meaningful.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

Mamatkazy is a volunteer of the Kyrgyz Wikipedia community, translates articles into the Kyrgyz language and is one of the organizers of the Competition.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

The main target audience is people living in Kyrgyzstan. We encourage them to upload their photographs of Kyrgyzstan's natural heritage to Wikimedia Commons, and also, if they are new to Wikipedia, to actively participate in volunteer work for Kyrgyz Wikipedia. In addition, a secondary target group could be people from all over the world who have photographs from the territory of Kyrgyzstan and who can participate in the competition.

To reach the beneficiaries, it is planned to use the main Instagram account of the competition, actively promoting it through targeted advertising. Press releases will also be distributed through various local media.
