Wiki Loves Earth 2023 in Niger

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

The competition will focus on freely licensed and high quality images of natural heritages in Niger, that will be contributed to Wikimedia Commons for free usage and spread its importance by its utilization in Wikipedia articles. We also want to attract newcomers to the movement. This competition is important because it allows us to have a first community of wikimedians in Niger that is very dynamic. The Niger community will organize the WLE 2023 competition for the first time. This will solve the lack of information on the state and type of biodiversity of Niger's natural heritage and the lack of images related to local biodiversity in Niger's Wikimedia articles.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

In order to achieve the changes we want in this project, we plan the following approaches or strategies : Training and capacity building: To provide participants with knowledge related to the topic, we will organize training sessions and editathons to skill our participants with knowledge on how they will contribute to the project. Several communication channels will be used to allow people from all over Niger to discover and participate in the competition. We will use different communication platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram public and private media to communicate well and involve the maximum number of participants.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

As part of the approaches related to our project, and in order to make our project known to its public, we plan to establish information releases through various media and communication channels for awareness and sensitization. We also plan to carry out an official conference to launch the project where we will invite the Ministry of Environment and some authorities.

We will organize photo walks in the interior of the country; we will upload photos to Wikimedia Commons; we will organize several Wikipedia workshops on how to add photos to Wikipedia articles. After the campaign, we will document the contributions made by the participants.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Ibrahimassoume: Co-lead and partnership manager Dadoaicha and Constantin BLAM DIMOUGNA KADEBE are responsible for supporting this campaign. Djida jida is responsible for social media to make activities visible and encourage participants to join the project. 3 Volunteers will be selected as part of the jury with the help of the Lead and the whole team. 6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

Niger has an abundance of animal and plant species in its protected areas. However, little of this information is available online, especially on wikipedia. Wiki Loves Earth is an opportunity to promote a better knowledge of local biodiversity through photography. This competition will be an opportunity to collect numerous photos of species in Niger's protected areas. This will help fill the information and image gap on Niger's protected areas.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Culture, heritage or GLAM , Climate Change and sustainability

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Geographic

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

The competition is open to all Nigeriens. There are no exceptions. Anyone with a smartphone or a camera is welcome to participate. We will encourage professional photographers to participate in the competition in order to have better quality photos. Before and during the activities, we will involve the participants through communication and the organization of capacity building sessions. In order to follow up with the participants after the activities, we have already created a WhatsApp group to integrate all the participants in order to stay in constant contact with them. We have a Meta-Wiki event page where we ask all participants to register.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

We are willing to apply and promote the Universal Code of Conduct(UCoC) throughout the competition.

11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.

Participants will be informed about the competition via: Social networks like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Whasapp where we already have pages and groups of people, the different messaging platforms will be used.
