Wiki Loves Africa 2023 with Campus Photo Fest Nigeria

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Local

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

A lot of creatives in Nigeria are left out when it comes to contributing to Commons. These are people who could contribute quality contents to the media repository, Wikimedia Commons, while telling the Africa story through the Wiki Loves Africa respective themes, if shown how. Since the theme of Wiki Loves Africa 2022 is "Climate and Weather", it is necessary to put a face to the respective effects of climate change in our context to help the better illustration of climate related articles on various Wikimedia projects. As one of the beneficiaries of the Organizers Lab cohort, I have had the opportunity to run Petscan queries on climate change related articles on Wikipedia about Nigeria, and could not help but notice these articles have not enough, or mostly no media clearly showing the various effects of the climate change in Nigeria. This discovery made me aware of how important it is to document the effects of climate change in Nigeria using media files. We shall be collaborating with Igbo Wikimedians User Group to execute Wiki Loves Africa 2023.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

I came across this pool of creatives that participate in Campus Photo Fest, and was able to introduce them to the Wikimedia movement via Wiki Loves Africa 2022. I hope to continue working with them to create and upload contents that are of encyclopedic value to Wikimedia Commons. We don't always have quality uploads from Nigeria with regards to Wikimedia Commons. Most of the images uploaded by these first-timers during Wiki Loves Africa were rated "Good images"...and I believe the community has potentials to do better as time goes on. Igbo Wikimedians User Group also boasts of Wikimedia Commons Hub which could ensure quality contributions are made towards the contest.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

We hope to access new audience through our partnership with Kodak Express, and as such will be having:

Photography masterclass for beginners Training Webinars on Intellectual property Training Webinars on CC licenses Training on how to upload Commons Photo walks Upload sessions

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Wiki Loves Africa

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

Ceslause Ogbonnaya (User:Ceslause) - Facilitator Wilson Oluoha (User:OtuNwachinemere) - Igbo Wikimedians User Group liaison Ugochukwu Nwakeze (User:Chesco44) - Campus Photo Fest Nigeria Partnerships and Communications William Brown - Kodak Express training facilitator

6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Geography, Other global topics for impact (topics considered to be of global importance)

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

In Nigeria, not enough images are recorded on the effects of climate change in our environment. These creatives participating in Wiki Loves Africa 2023 can help close the content gap around the subject in our context. This diversifies contents about climate change in Nigeria. The photo-walk activity is aimed at capturing the effects of climate change in various locations. While the effect is flooding in a particular area, it could be erosion, drought, bushfire, etc, in other locations.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Education, Advocacy, Climate Change and sustainability

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Not applicable

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

Target participants are mostly from the Wiki Loves Africa 2022 Campus Phot Fest activities, then a good number of new participants we hope to rope in from Kodak's network of photographers and Igbo Wikimedians User Group members. We succeeded in building a telegram group from our Wiki Loves Africa 2022 activities, where we will be updating community members on the Wiki Loves Africa 2023. We also will leverage of Camus Photo Fest's and Kodak Express' Facebook, Instagram and twitter handles to communicate and attract new participants. After the Wiki Loves Africa 2023, participants will be supported to participate in Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos and ISA tool campaign.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

To help participants with less photography skills, our partnership with Kodak involves them providing resource persons for the Photography/Cinematography Masterclass. We also will be having training sessions around CC licenses and uploading to Wikimedia Commons...all to ensure everyone is playing on a level ground. We also have the Friendly space policy pinned in our telegram, which each new entrant is made to read.

11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.

My home, Igbo Wikimedians User Group participated in the Wiki Loves Africa 2022 Campus Photo Fest activities, and even sponsored some prize categories. We agreed it was a great idea worth continuing, though the Igbo Wikimedians were much more experienced participants, and seem to be charting their own Wiki Loves Africa path for 2023. User:OtuNwachinemere and User:Anthere were also among the resource persons we had this year on the training sessions, and they appreciate idea of continually supporting more creatives to contribute to Wikimedia Commons. The rest of the discussion happened between the team that facilitated the 2022 activities, myself, Campus Photo Fest team and the Kodak representative.

12. Are you aware of other Rapid Fund proposals in your local group, community, or region that are being submitted and that align with your proposed project?

No

If yes:

N/A
12.2 How will this joint proposal allow you to have better results?
N/A
13. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedia partners to implement this proposal? Required.

Yes

13.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.

Campus Photo Fest is great at rallying young creatives, hence why I reached out to them to participate in Wiki Loves Africa. Kodak Express had a network of local professional photographers who could contribute quality media files to Wikimedia Commons. Kodak also sponsored top images from Wiki Loves Africa 2022 Campus Photo Fest Nigeria with canvas frames, and is looking to even do more with us this year by organizing a photography/cinematography masterclass for the participants amongst other things. We are also partnering with a VR company called RBX, to see if we could have a virtual exhibition for the 2022 top local images and the 2023 top local images.

14. In what ways do you think your proposal most contributes to the Movement Strategy 2030 recommendations. Select a maximum of THREE options that most apply.

Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement, Provide for Safety and Inclusion, Coordinate Across Stakeholders, Invest in Skills and Leadership Development, Identify Topics for Impact, Innovate in Free Knowledge, Evaluate, Iterate, and Adapt
