6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Wiki Loves Africa aims to redefine the African narrative using media and to also to give emerging Wikimedia communities an opportunity to interface with the open knowledge movement. Igbo Wikimedians and Campus PhotoFest (which was first introduced to the contest by Ceslause in 2022) will be continuing their collaborative participation in 2024. While Veritas University Wiki Fan club will be participating for the first time in 2024 under the guidance of the more experienced Igbo community project organizers.

The Theme for the 2024 contest is Africa Create and will provide an opportunity for submission of media that potrays include submissions of media that portray the process of creating, inventing, manufacturing culturally defined items, make-up, art, hairstyles, music, dance, clothes and woven materials etc. Basically, elements that promotes Africa's rich heritage and culture expressed through music, song, dance, and/or movement.

Participants will be encouraged to submit photos, audio, videos, graphics etc in line with the theme which will be used on Wikipedia, Wikidata and other sister projects. There will also be capacity building events and trainings to improve quality of submissions and ensure that they are useful wihtin the open knowldege space.

  • Trainings - Mobile phone photography, Quality photos, Encyclopedic videos etc
  • Webinars - Wikimedia Commons basics, Introduction to Categories, etc
  • Workshop - Image editing tools, Video editing Sound editing etc
  • ISA tool campaign - (Hopefully, the tool gets fixed soon)
  • WPWP - To use the uploads from the contest on Wikipedia
  • Description translation contest - To add descriptions to the uploaded media that are without them

Target participants are mostly from the Wiki Loves Africa 2023 Campus Phot Fest activities, then a good number of new participants we hope to rope in from Kodak's network of photographers, Veritas University wiki fan club and the vibrant Igbo Wikimedians Commons hub members. We succeeded in building a telegram group from the Campus photofest Wiki Loves Africa 2022 activities and sustained in 2023, where we will be updating community members on the Wiki Loves Africa 2024 events. We also will leverage on Campus Photo Fest's and Kodak Express' Facebook, Instagram and twitter handles to communicate and attract new participants. After the Wiki Loves Africa 2024, participants will be supported to participate in Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP), description translation project on Commons and ISA tool campaign.

After extensive conversations and cognizant of the successes recorded locally in the 2023 iteration of the WLA, members of all 3 communities have discussed off-wiki and agreed to participate in the 2024 iteration of the WLA project collaboratively. This would help us put foundations resources to good use and leverage on our existing relationships and collective experience to host a hitch-free WLA 2024.
