Wiki Action for Climate change in Kogi State Nigeria

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Local

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

The change I am trying to make is to close the geographical knowledge gap of climate change and sustainability related articles in Kogi State Nigeria on wikimedia projects. A petscan i conducted shows that they are no Kogi State climate change articles on wikipedia. However, the state is one of the states in Nigeria that has been most negatively impacted by climate change in terms of flooding and drought.

Kogi State is a confluence to the two largest rivers in west Africa (River Niger And River Benue). During the rainy season, the country consistently suffers heavy rain for a longer period of time resulting from the effects of climate change leading to the rivers overrunning their banks and causing flooding in the State.

The effect of climate change in Kogi State is real, its problem is becoming worse every year since the year 2012. The recent 2022 flooding pounded the state so hard that several houses were submerged, belongings destroyed and forcing people to leave their ancestral homes to settle in internally-displaced people camps. Lives were lost, farmlands and several buildings were flooded. The situation resulted in untold hardship for residents.

If this proposal is implemented, it will close the geographical knowledge gap regarding the effects of climate change in Kogi State Nigeria on wikimedia projects, and inspire individuals to alter their views on climate change in order to lessen the effects.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

I plan to work with group of young, passionate Nigerians from Kogi State to join the campaign so that they can share information about flood and drought in the state on wikimedia projects.

I also plan to work with the experienced wikimedia language communities in Nigeria (Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba) so as to help contribute in their various language on wikipedia.

I plan to involve the staff of Kogi State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and Centre for Atmospheric Research a center under National Space Research and Development Agency located in Kogi State to help provide relevent information about flood and drought in the state.

I choose this strategy because; The passionate youth climate activists from Kogi State will be excited to share and upload climate change and sustainability photos on wikimedia commons and eventually continue to contribute to Wikipedia when they have gained necessary wikipedia editing experience to narrow the geographic knowlegde gap about themes related to climate change and sustainability in the state.

The experienced language wikimedia user groups in Nigeria (Igbo,Hausa and Yoruba)will be happy to contribute in order to fill the language Knowledge gap about flood and drought incedents in Kogi State

The staff from the State Ministry (Kogi State Ministry of Enviroment and Natural Resources and federal government agency (Center for Atmospheric Research under the National Space Research and Development Agency) will be glad to share accurate and relevant information about the flood and drought incedents in the state in order to help improve people's behavioural change so as to reduce the effect of climate change in the state.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

I want to establish the following activities as part of my strategy to assist me reach my goals;

Creating online meetings with different language wikimedia groups in Nigeria and engaging them to make contributions to wikipedia in their different native tongues.

My work is going to address the geographical content gap about Kogi State flooding on wikimedia projects. Also it will help fill the language content gaps on the three main language wikipedia in Nigeria which are igbo, Hausa and Yoruba.

My participants will also include experienced wikimedians from different language groups in Nigeria.

I will set up a telegram group before the start of the campaign to remind my participants on a regular basis of the event's start date in order to get them ready and prepared.

I will engage my participants in meetings, trainings, writing and translating wikidata and wikipedia pages, and uploading pictures to wikimedia commons.

My Strategy to retain my participants is by creating telegram group and constantly engaging them on the group, i also intend to introduce them to other wikimedia climate change groups
