1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

This project aims at recruiting new Wikipedia editors who are librarians. A study published in the Journal of Academic Librarianship found that librarians who edit Wikipedia can improve the quality of articles by adding citations and correcting errors. The study also found that librarian contributions to Wikipedia can promote the visibility and credibility of Wikipedia and its sister projects. Another research published in the International Journal of Digital Library Services found that librarians can help address issues of bias and representation on Wikipedia by contributing articles on underrepresented groups and topics. The study also found that librarian contributions can help increase the diversity and inclusivity of Wikipedia.

Librarians can bring several changes to Wikipedia to improve the quality and reliability of the information available on the platform. Some of the changes they can make include:

Creating Wikipedia articles: Librarians can create Wikipedia articles with refrences from reliable sources looking at the availability of these resources at their disposal. Improving citations: As information experts, librarians can ensure that Wikipedia articles have reliable sources and properly formatted citations. Adding missing information: Librarians can help fill gaps in Wikipedia articles by adding missing information, such as historical context or details on little-known figures or events. Fact-checking: Librarians can help verify information on Wikipedia to ensure that it is accurate and up-to-date. Improving readability: Librarians can help make Wikipedia articles more accessible by improving their organization, structure, and language. Promoting diversity: Librarians can help ensure that Wikipedia reflects diverse perspectives and experiences by contributing articles on underrepresented groups and topics.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

The proposed format is an edit-a-thon with formal formal on the introduction of Wikipedia and its sisters project to librarians in Oyo state, Nigeria. The project which will be delivered as a hybrid event, online and offline session extended over five weeks in May, 2023.

The on-line participation will start with an onboarding session at a physical event where experienced editors will be available to guide new editors, and play mentorship roles for them. This format will allow returning semi-experience editor to re-learn the act of creating and editing Wikipedia.

Furthermore, it allows a continuous engagement with the librarians till they are fully grown into experienced editors.

Lastly, an analytical approach and supervision, an intended evaluation and synthesis of GLAMs to organized similar events is embedded in the proposal for dissemination and further work on developing best approaches to increasing diversity and inclusion, reducing the digital divide and improving social cohesion and disinformation resilience.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Activities of this project will be Hybrid Editathon, we aim to elevate the non-formal experiential approach in the editathon to allow virtual access, repeat participation and interaction, and to engage and cross-seminate participants.

Here's how it will work:

1. In-person training: The hybrid editathon would begin with an in-person training session, where librarians would be introduced to Wikipedia and its sisters project and learn the basics of Wikipedia editing. This session will be led by experienced Wikipedians. At this training, every new editor will be assigned an experienced editor as mentor for direct mentoring.
2. Virtual training: After the in-person training, participants would be given access to a series of online training modules via zoom that would cover more advanced topics in Wikipedia editing.
3. Collaborative editing: Once participants have completed the training modules, they would be invited to collaborate on editing Wikipedia articles with other partcipants (librarians) in a virtual environment (Telegram group).
4. In-person editathon: Finally, the hybrid editathon would culminate in an in-person editing event, where participants would come together to edit Wikipedia articles and receive further support and guidance from their mentors (experienced Wikipedians). This will be the last day of the training where certificate of participations will be awarded.

The hybrid editathon model offers several advantages for training and recruiting librarians as Wikipedia editors. By combining both in-person and online components, it allows participants to learn at their own pace and collaborate with others from a distance. Additionally, the model provides a structured training and editing experience that can help participants build confidence and develop their skills as Wikipedia editors.
