The change we are striving to bring about through the Wikimedia for Human Rights 2024 campaign is an enriched understanding and broader awareness of key human rights issues related to sustainability in Nigeria. We aim to deepen the discourse on sustainable agriculture, the right to food, sustainable urban construction, the right to housing, clean water, sanitation, and environmental protection, all of which are crucial for achieving a sustainable future as endorsed by international human rights documents and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Our analysis reveals a knowledge gap and limited content availability on these critical issues within the Wikimedia landscape specifically on Wikipedia and Wikidata, particularly in the context of Nigeria. For instance, essential environmental topics, such as water and sanitation, essential for health sustainability (linked with SDGs 5, 3, & 13), are underrepresented. There's a notable absence of comprehensive data and articles related to Nigeria's ministries and organizations dealing with these sustainability challenges. This inadequate information not only hinders global understanding but also affects local populations' access to valuable knowledge that could inform better practices and policies.
Furthermore, language accessibility(SDGs 4) emerges as a significant barrier. For example, the Igala community's limited access to climate change information in their native language prevents them from fully engaging with and understanding these critical issues. This language gap exacerbates knowledge disparities and hinders effective community involvement in sustainability initiatives.
In the Niger Delta region, environmental degradation's impact on human rights is profound yet underreported. Over 2.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas are flared daily, contributing to health problems and ecological damage. Information about the region's environmental challenges, especially how they intersect with human rights(SDGs 3, 6, 13, 14, 15) is sparse, calling for focused content development to highlight and address these issues.
Northern Nigeria faces acute challenges with waste management (SDGs 14), where an estimated 32 million tons of solid waste is produced annually, yet only 20-23% is appropriately managed. The resultant pollution poses significant health risks, yet detailed and localized information on waste management practices and their environmental and health impacts is lacking on Wikimedia platforms.
In addressing these challenges, our consolidated strategy involves creating and enhancing Wikimedia content to reflect Nigeria's specific contexts and challenges in these areas. By improving the availability and quality of information, translating key content into local languages, and engaging with experts and community members for content verification and enrichment, we aim to build a more informed community that can actively participate in shaping a sustainable future. Enhancing content related to sustainable practices, human rights, and environmental protection will empower individuals and communities with the knowledge to advocate for and implement changes that align with the Sustainable Development Goals and international human rights standards.

To achieve the desired changes, we would build the following activities aligned with our set strategies:
Recruitment, Community engagement and sustaining WikiForHuman Rights: The project will collaborate with 7 selected local community leaders and at least 3 Stakeholders in Anambra, Imo, the Igala-speaking regions, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile Ife, the Niger Delta, Kaduna, and Gombe State Nigeria. These stakeholders include the Department of Geography and Environmental Management, Ministry of Environment, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other Non Governmental organizations. Leveraging these local community collaborations and partnerships, we would mobilize at least 175 new and existing community members in Nigeria to participate in the campaign. , Using roundtable discussions, we will stimulate understanding and promote knowledge at the intersection of agriculture, urban construction, health, climate actions, environmental protection, and human rights through the lens of Wikimedia projects. By combining community engagement with the development of dedicated WikiForHuman Rights organizing in these Nigerian regions, we aim to foster a deep-rooted sense of ownership, collaboration, and active participation in sustainability efforts. These communities will serve as hubs for learning, sharing best practices, and generating content, thereby creating a sustainable ecosystem of knowledge and activism. Engaging community members through panel discussions, and collaborative content creation will enhance their commitment to sustainable practices in supporting the collective pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals to make informed decisions. Capacity building for organizers and local communities Organize local physical and online training sessions for participants to learn how to contribute to sustainable agriculture, sustainable urban construction, and environmental protection related topics on Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikivoyage. These trainings would be led by the local community leaders with support from the campaign national coordinators. Participating communities would also be mobilized to participate in the different global and regional capacity-building sessions organized by the campaign. Content Development and Localization: To overcome language barriers and enhance accessibility, we will focus on developing and improving content in English and most importantly in the local languages of the participating communities such as Igala, igbo among others Hence, local community leaders would organize editing, translating and writing activities to engage participants from 7 different Nigerian states to build knowledge relating to sustainable agriculture, sustainable urban construction, and environmental protection on Wikipedia, Wikidata and other Wikimedia projects. This strategy ensures that the information is culturally relevant and easily understood, improving engagement and effectiveness in promoting sustainability initiatives. By prioritizing key areas and localizing content, we aim to significantly boost understanding and active participation in sustainable practices across the diverse regions we target. Some of the activities that would span across the 7 different states includes: Anambra Wikimedia Nigeria Network - (two in-person and 2 online training sessions Igala Community - (One in-person and two online training sessions); OAU Fan Club - (one in-person and two online training sessions); Port Harcourt Wikimedia Nigeria Hub - one in-person and two online training sessions); Kaduna Network - (one in-person and three online training sessions); Imo Wikimedia Nigeria Network community - two in-person event and two online trainings); Gombe Wikimedia Nigeria Network - two in person and two online training.

Ugwulebo : An experienced Wikimedian and co-founder of the Port Harcourt Wikimedia Hub. He has organized several Wikimedia projects in Nigeria. He will coordinate the project in Port Harcourt. AgnesAbah : Team lead for the Igala community for the Wikiforhumanrights Campaign in Nigeria. Agnes Abah Co founder and Team lead for Igala wikimedia community Ngostarady2k: Project Coordinator for Anambra Network for the Wikiforhumanrights Campaign in Nigeria. Ngozi Perpetua Osuchukwu Ph.D is a Librarian and Information Scientist. She is a Lecturer in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka Nigeria. She is the President of Wikimedia Anambra Network of Wikimedia User Group Nigeria. Dr Ngozi has facilitated many Wikimedia projects. She has presented and published many Wikimedia articles both locally and Internationally. Her research interests areas include Community information, Women and children, ICT, Wikipedia and Social justice Inyor4mr: Will be coordinating Wikimedia Kaduna Network.she is a certified Librarian and founder of Wikimedia Kaduna Network. She will coordinate all the activities concerning this campaign in Kaduna Praise03: acting leader Oau wikimedia community. I organize and create awareness programs on how to contribute to wikimedia movement and core content policies in my community. Atibrarian : He is coordinating Gombe community. Ismail Atiba, is an experienced wikimedia and community Lead Coordinator, at Wikimedia Gombe Network. Emmanuel Obiajulu: Team Lead Wikimedia Imo State Network. Will direct, manage, and motivate Wikimedia volunteers in the execution of this project in Imo State.

This project targets primarily Wikimedia communities in seven Nigerian states. These local communities include Anambra Wikimedia Nigeria Network, Imo Wikimedia Nigeria Network, Igala Wikimedia Community, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Wikimedia Fan Club, Port Harcourt Wikimedia Hub, Kaduna Wikimedia Nigeria Network and Gombe Wikimedia Nigeria Network. The leaders of these Wikimedia communities would collaborate with the national coordinators to mobilize and engage their community members in the campaign. They would also leverage the project partnerships to recruit new participants that would join in the campaign activities. Beyond the communities, the campaign is also open to other wikimedia communities and wikimedians in Nigeria with interest to participate in the local activities but not listed in the proposal. The leaders would adopt their different local community communication channels such as Whatsapp groups as a platform for onboarding and engaging participants during the campaign period. Such Whatsapp groups would serve as a channel for continuous engagement even after the campaign activities. The national coordinators also have a dedicated whatsapp group with the 7 local community leaders for planning and implementing set activities for the campaign.
Additionally, awareness will be created through visits to selected institutions, meetings with young climate activists, and promoting the project on social media. The call for participation will be made through the Fan clubs, Hubs, and Network's social media platforms using e-posters and banners.
