Brazil's lush and diverse natural landscapes are genuinely awe-inspiring. From the vast stretches of the Amazon rainforest to the stunning waterfalls of Iguazu, the country boasts a myriad of protected natural sites that showcase its rich biodiversity. However, there is a significant problem—the sites' scarcity of free photographs limits their potential for raising awareness and promoting them to a larger audience.

This shortage of images makes it challenging for people to learn about and appreciate these natural treasures, leaving them underappreciated and underutilized. To address this issue, we need to increase the availability of free photographs of Brazil's protected natural sites. This would make it easier for people to learn about and appreciate these areas, promote the importance of preserving them, and encourage more people to visit, thus supporting conservation efforts.

Despite Brazil's vast and unique biodiversity, the country is experiencing a significant loss, primarily due to deforestation, land use changes, and climate change. One of the most devastating consequences of biodiversity loss is the endangerment of many animal species in Brazil. Habitat destruction, hunting, and climate change are the main factors contributing to this problem.

This biodiversity loss has dire consequences for ecosystems, the services they provide, and human well-being. Raising awareness about the loss of biodiversity in Brazil and the importance of protecting and conserving it is essential. Increasing public knowledge and understanding can encourage people to take action to reduce their impact on the environment and support conservation efforts.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Leveraging Four Years of Experience and Creating Social Media Content

We will enhance our strategies by building on our four years of experience with the Wiki Loves Earth contest. One key focus will be creating more content for social media, a strategy that has proven highly effective in Brazil.

Social Media Campaign for Wiki Loves Earth

Our social media campaign will promote the Wiki Loves Earth initiative by creating and sharing high-quality content across various platforms, including Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok. This content will raise awareness and generate interest among the wider public. We will encourage users to engage with the campaign after uploading photos to Wikimedia Commons and tagging us in their social media posts. This approach will expand the network of individuals passionate about nature and conservation, amplifying the initiative's impact. The content will include information about the contest, how to participate, and the benefits of contributing.

Influencer Marketing for Wiki Loves Earth

Another strategy is to leverage influencer marketing to reach a wider audience and increase engagement. We will identify and collaborate with social media influencers with a significant following and a strong interest in environmental issues. These influencers will be invited to promote the campaign on their channels, enabling us to tap into their audience and leverage their credibility and influence. Providing influencers with resources such as high-quality images and information about the initiative will help them create engaging content that resonates with their followers. This strategy has proven effective in previous Wiki Loves Earth campaigns in Brazil, and we are confident it will drive engagement and increase participation in WLE BR 2023.

Developing Tutorials to Simplify Wikimedia Commons Entry

We will create a series of tutorials and guides for potential contributors to simplify using Wikimedia Commons. These resources will cover topics such as uploading images, adding metadata, and categorizing images. Additionally, we will provide detailed instructions on how to participate in the Wiki Loves Earth contest. By offering easy-to-understand tutorials, we aim to encourage more people to participate and increase the number and quality of entries. The existing high-quality material will be updated for the current year and shared via social media and the contest website to facilitate newcomers' understanding of the platform.

Simplifying the Upload Process at Wikimedia Commons for the Contest

To streamline the entry process for WLE participants, we will prepare the Upload Wizard to accommodate newcomers and update the list of conservation units. This will create a straightforward process for participants. Each photo is not just an image but also educational material. Therefore, including more information increases its potential for use. We have implemented these improvements in previous years and continue to refine the process.

Training Jury Members

To ensure fair and consistent judging, we will provide jury members with training. This will include instructions on evaluating quality from Wikimedia Environment's perspective and answering participants' questions about contest rules, requirements, Wikimedia Commons, and our values. The training will be conducted online and supplemented with reference materials. Well-trained jury members will effectively evaluate contributions, provide feedback, and maintain contest quality, increasing its credibility and motivating more contributors.

Creating Multiple Channels for Questions

We will establish multiple ways for contributors to ask questions about Wiki Loves Earth and Wikimedia Commons, primarily through social media. This includes creating a dedicated FAQ section on the website and a team to answer questions via email, discussion pages, and social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Using social media as a primary channel will make it more accessible to a larger audience, allowing quicker responses and broader engagement. We aim to encourage continued contributions to Wikimedia Environment by answering questions and building relationships with participants.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

Our team comprises over 30 photographers specializing in various types of nature photography, such as wildlife, landscapes, and macro photography. These photographers have worked for prestigious organizations like BBC, National Geographic, etc. All team members are volunteers, dedicating their time and expertise to the Wiki Loves Earth initiative. Many of our team members are also science communicators, passionate about sharing knowledge and raising awareness about environmental issues. Additionally, we have experts in social media, particularly among science communicators.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

Our target participants are Brazilians interested in nature photography and environmental conservation, focusing on engaging those less represented in the Wikimedia Environment. We will engage them through various means, including social media outreach, targeted email campaigns, and personal invitations to participate in Wiki Loves Earth. Promotion will include social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter and reaching out to local photography groups and associations. Additionally, we plan to host a photo exhibition featuring previous WLE participants. After the contest, we plan to maintain momentum with a fun and exciting photo expedition. This expedition will explore local areas of interest, offering opportunities for participants to meet like-minded people, learn new skills, and engage with the Wikimedia community. To retain participants, we are creating a supportive network of photographers where they can share their work, seek feedback, and continue learning from each other. Workshops will also be offered for those wishing to develop their skills further and contribute to Wikimedia Environment through photography.
