Organization

N/A

If you are a group or organization leader, board member, president, executive director, or staff member at any Wikimedia group, affiliate, or Wikimedia Foundation, you are required to self-identify and present all roles. (required)

I'm a group leader of an informal Wikimedia group.

Describe all relevant roles with the name of the group or organization and description of the role. (required)

I'm one of the leaders of the wikimedia community in Madagascar. Our community is not yet formal, but we are in the process of applying to become a user group. We've been on this adventure for a year now, and we're really enjoying it. As animators, we're always trying to participate in Wikimedia events and campaigns, and to find funding. At present, we have around thirty trained contributors, and we're always trying to find activities to motivate them. Madagascar is still poorly documented in this free encyclopedia, and we're really keen to develop information and publicize the wealth of our country.

Main Proposal edit

1. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.

WIKI LOVES FOLKLORE 2024 - MADAGASCAR

2. and 3. Proposed start and end dates for the proposal.

2024-03-17 - 2024-03-30

4. Where will this proposal be implemented? (required)

Madagascar

5. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign, project, or event? If so, please select the relevant project or campaign. (required)

Wiki Loves Folklore

6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

The celebration will take place in 2 regions of Madagascar: one in the capital, Antananarivo, and the other in the far north of Madagascar, Antsiranana. Regarding folklore, there is little information available, especially in the coastal regions of the large island.

For this event, the team in the northern part, consisting of 3 organizers and 10 contributors, will gather additional folklore information in this region through a photowalking activity. Hundreds of photos will be uploaded to illustrate folklore articles for the region, and they will also be part of the national photo contest.

The team in the central region, consisting of 3 organizers and 10 contributors, will primarily focus on improving articles on the folklores of the central highlands. They will also write articles on Malagasy female celebrities through writing workshops. At the end of the campaign, around twenty articles will be enhanced, and about ten articles will be created on the themes of folklore and feminism.

By the end of the campaign, we will have more documents and information about Malagasy folklores and female celebrities in Madagascar.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

For ANTANANARIVO:

Day 1: Writing workshop on creating and improving articles about folklore. Day 2: Documentation in the library. 7 days: Article contest and selection of judges. Day 3: Award ceremony and closing. For ANTSIRANANA:

Day 1: Photowalking with the theme of folklore. Day 2: Uploading photos and a writing workshop about folklore. 7 days: Photo contest and selection of judges. Day 3: Award ceremony and closing.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

Our request to be recognized as a user group is still in the process. Our community has been active on Wikimedia for a year now. We have participated in several Wikimedia events, but this is our first involvement in Wiki Loves Folklore. The community is spread across three regions of Madagascar: Antananarivo, Mahajanga, and Antsiranana. In each region, there are 2 or 3 leaders, and they are the ones organizing and executing events in their respective areas.

For each event, the leaders coordinate to ensure that one of us takes the lead, handling the event's design, organization, and funding requests, all the way through to submitting the final reports. As a result, online meetings are regularly scheduled among the leaders to coordinate our efforts. However, it is crucial to note that the leaders work closely together.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

For this campaign, we will work with the 10 most dedicated contributors in each region to increase their motivation. They have recently been trained on "how to contribute to Wikimedia." However, this does not prevent public participation. Despite their connection to their respective regions, many contributors are unfamiliar with the history of their area. Thus, this event will give contributors the opportunity to discover more about Madagascar and share their findings afterward.

10. Does your project involve work with children or youth? (required)

No

10.1. Please provide a link to your Youth Safety Policy. (required) If the proposal indicates direct contact with children or youth, you are required to outline compliance with international and local laws for working with children and youth, and provide a youth safety policy aligned with these laws. Read more here.

11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

As I mentioned in the previous question, we, the regional leaders, work closely together. We discussed the proposal together online, taking into account the specific needs of each region. This is precisely why the activities in each region are different. You can find more information about the project in each region on these links:
