The Visible Ones enhances institutional visibility of women artists in Croatian museums. Launched as an exhibition in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb in May 2023, it gathered works of more than 100 contemporary female artists, active from the 1960s till today. After Zagreb, the exhibition is presented in major Croatian cities – currently it is in Rijeka, whereafter it will travel to Split, Dubrovnik and Osijek. Each exhibition stop will interact with the local community and public.

The project proposal is aimed to enhance visibility of female artists in art collections of Croatian museums – Museum of contemporary Art Zagreb, Museum of Modern Art, Rijeka, Museum of Fine Arts Dubrovnik, Museum of Fine Arts Osijek. The percentage of woman artist on Croatian Wikipedia is a bit more than 16 %, similar to the percentage of the artists in the collection of Croatian museums. On the other hand, only 11% of the new acquisitions for US museums relate to the work of female artists. The visibility is in the focus of an ongoing series of exhibitions in those institutions, and the proposed actions will enhance visibility also on the Internet through 2 main actions – by starting publishing articles on artists included in the exhibition The Visible Ones in Croatian, English and other Wikipedias, Wikidata and Commons. Furthermore, a campaign on visibility of the artists on the Internet will be launched, and followed by a campaign to free images from the artists in public collections for public domain or at least CC-by-SA licence. Finally, the visibility of women artists will be the key word of the exhibition guide accessible online and in print. Informing institutions for the first time on Wikimedia opportunities (including hosting WiRs and organizing events) will be done in parallel internally.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. The workshop will be co-organized with the Art History Department of Faculty of Arts and Sciencies, University of Split professors and will be managed by Silva Kalčić and Dalibor Prančević, both professors at Art History Department in Split. They will work with the group of students at University of Split and with the young critics from the region. As a part of curriculum, students will be invited to select 2 artists and to propose editing or a new Wikipedia entry on them, and those entries will be jointly edited by Wiki trainers and scholars.

In Zagreb, the workshop will be done for students of Art History, Museology and for the course on art criticism. Participants will be invited to explore and present woman artists from Croatia on Croatian and English Wikipedia, propose edits and new entires, and to discuss it with museum curators, professors, Wiki trainers. The starting point will be artists exhibited in the permanent collection display Collection as a verb.

Woman artists from the museum collections will be contacted regarding the applying CC licence with their work. The campaign will start by publishing results from the workshop held in Split, and will be re-launched after Zagreb workshop.
