As a university lecturer and a green building zealot, sustainability as stated in the UN Conference of 1984 is a goal that African countries need to achieve. Lack of energy sufficiency appropriate to the building's climate zone, proper designs and environmental friendly buildings is a challenge in most of Tanzanian communities. The main change being pursued is to reduce the environmental impact of buildings in Tanzania and mitigate climate change. Buildings are a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions through energy consumption, construction materials, and waste generation. To address this issue, various challenges and problems need to be addressed: The following are the challenges that need to be addressed;

1. Energy Efficiency: One of the main challenges is to make buildings more energy-efficient. Many buildings in Tanzania lack proper insulation, energy-efficient lighting, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. This leads to increased energy consumption and carbon emissions.
2. Sustainable Materials: There's a need to promote the use of sustainable and locally-sourced building materials, reducing the carbon footprint associated with the transportation of materials. Additionally, the construction sector must reduce the use of materials like cement, which have a high carbon intensity and seek to use alternative construction materials such as low carbon bricks and structural timber.
3. Lack of Awareness: Many builders and homeowners may not be aware of sustainable building practices and technologies. Providing training and education on green building techniques and technologies is essential.
4. Cost Considerations: The upfront costs of sustainable building practices and technologies can be a barrier to adoption, especially for low-income communities. Finding cost-effective solutions is crucial.
5. Regulatory and Policy Framework: The absence of supportive policies and regulations are hindering the adoption of sustainable building practices. Clear and effective guidelines need to be developed and enforced.

Main Approaches to Achieve Sustainable Buildings for Climate Change Mitigation in Tanzania:

1. Energy-efficient building design: Promote energy-efficient building designs that maximize natural lighting and ventilation, reducing the need for artificial lighting and HVAC systems.
2. Renewable energy integration: Encourage the use of renewable energy sources, such as solar panels, to power buildings and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
3. Education and awareness: Raise awareness and provide training to builders, architects, and homeowners about sustainable building practices and technologies.
4. Workshops and trainings: To train builders, university students and building users on proper ways of achieving sustainability.
5. Research and innovation: Promote research and innovation in sustainable building materials and technologies that are suitable for the Tanzanian context.
6. Community engagement: Involve communities in sustainable building initiatives, encouraging ownership and participation in climate change mitigation efforts.

Sustainable buildings for climate change mitigation in Tanzania will require a collaborative effort involving government, industries, communities, and international organizations to address the challenges and implement these approaches effectively.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Here is a list of activities;

1. Public Awareness and Education: Conduct awareness campaigns and educational programs to inform builders, architects, homeowners, and the general public about the benefits of sustainable building practices.
2. Editathon for content availability in Wikipedia. This will be done together with the Mapathon for proper spacing of the buildings.
3. Workshops and trainings: Organize workshops, seminars, and training sessions to teach construction professionals about green building techniques and technologies.
4. Seminars to insist university students pursuing programs related to construction industry on the importance of mitigating climate change through proper building design and spacing.
5. Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with local communities, industry associations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Tanzania to build partnerships and gain support for sustainable building initiatives.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

The following are my target participants and their respective communities

1. University students from Mbeya University of Science and Technology, College of Architecture and Construction Technology. This is a college I belong as a lecturer, and we do have about 600 students pursuing different construction related programs whom we think are potential for this project.
2. Local Communities are our second target group who actually live in informal settlements around northern highlands urban spaces
3. Builders who participate in different building construction projects in Mbeya city.
10. Does your project involve work with children or youth? (required)

No

10.1. Please provide a link to your Youth Safety Policy. (required) If the proposal indicates direct contact with children or youth, you are required to outline compliance with international and local laws for working with children and youth, and provide a youth safety policy aligned with these laws. 11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

The idea of the project on sustainability was firstly discussed with fellow wikimedians from Tanzania, students from my college, co-workers and local communities through virtual and face to face discussions. It was also shared through their email addresses to discuss the need to impose this project in Tanzania.
