The Wikimedians of Lagos User Group aims to bring about a change in the representation of notable women born in Lagos on the English Wikiquote. There are many notable women that are born in Lagos e.g Aralola Olamuyiwa, Titi Oyinsan, Bekeme Masade etc that do not have their voice in the enwikiquote. In line with our objective of promoting Lagos and increasing the representation of Lagos and its people on Wikimedia projects including the English Wikiquote, we are addressing the underrepresentation of notable women born in Lagos on Wikiquote by creating and improving their articles on enwikiquote. In the SheSaid 2023 edition, our community was well prepared and as a leader of the community, I was invited as a guest on the WikiAfrica Hour youtube podcast. Unfortunately, we were not funded and the gap is still there because we couldn't capitalize on our reach because we could only do little. By participating in organising the SheSaid 2024 campaign, we aim to attract the previous intending participants that have showed interest in participating through many emails requseting on upadate on the campaign. We will also encourage existing members to join us to celebrate and recognize women born in Lagos by focusing on enhancing their representation and visibility on Wikiquote. Our main approaches are:
- Research: We will conduct thorough research to identify notable women born in Lagos on the English Wikipedia to establish their notability and compile a comprehensive list of these women and their quotes.
- Content Creation: We will create new pages on English Wikiquote for each of identified notable women, including their biographical information in the introduction section in enwikiquote and adding relevant quotes.
- Quality Improvement: We will review and improve existing pages on English Wikiquote related to notable women born in Lagos by adding new well sourced quotes or expanding on existing ones.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
- Research phase:
Compile a list of notable women born in Lagos: We will conduct extensive research to identify notable women born in Lagos on the English Wikipedia across various fields such as politics, arts, sports, science, and literature.
- Articles for creation: We will add a link to these notable women born in Lagos to the event landing page and encourage participants to pick from this list thus eliminating notability issues which may arise if participants are left to just create any article about women born in Lagos.
- Content creation and improvement phase:
We will carry out trainings on 4 diffrent days to ensure that participants are equipped with the right skills needed to create articles on the English Wikiquote.
- Create new pages: We will organize editathon to create new pages on English Wikiquote for each notable woman born in Lagos already added to the list of articles to be created, providing accurate and comprehensive biographical information in the introductory section.
- Improve existing articles: We will improve existing articles by adding quotes and reliable sources to wikiquote pages of women born in Lagos during the editathon.
- Add quotes: We will add relevant quotes to the newly created pages, attributing them properly to the respective women and adding credible source.
- Review existing pages: Existing pages related to notable women born in Lagos will be reviewed, with quotes expanded or improved with reliable sources to enhance their content and accuracy.
Overview of planned activities on event days:
- Day 1- Basic Overview of Wikiquote core policies and guidelines, How to navigate and edit Wikiquote, practical exercise
Day 2 - How to navigate and edit Wikiquote (continuation), Guide to *Wikiquote layout, practical exercise
- Day 3 - Evaluating Wikiquotes articles and sources, How to find good sources and cite them on Wikiquote, adding images to articles, compilation of quotes and sources of notable women born in Lagos practical exercise
- Day 4 - Editathon: Creating standard and quality pages of Wikiquote of women born in Lagos, collaborative cleaning of created articles with feedback.

After the project activities, we will create a WhatsApp group dedicated to the participants that will help us to continue engagement with them. We will encourage them to ask questions on this platform and we will swiftly address their questions. To avoid duplication of efforts, we will create a list of articles to be created or improved with red links so that once an article is created, participants will know it has been completed and can pick another article. Since the previous edition did not address our challenge, we can say that the content gap of lack of representation of notable Lagos women is yet to be bridged in the English Wikiquote. As a Wikimedia user group in our own geographic space, i.e. Lagos, we plan to improve the skills of our members in contributing to Wikimedia projects. We have also reached out by posting a notification on the Wikimedia Nigeria User Group page to encourage other communities to be involved in our project.
