1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Conservation action by indigenous communities’ initiative in northern Kenya; Save Beisa Oryx & Community resilience initiative (SBOC) is providing hope for the future of the endangered Beisa oryx in the region. Oryx Beisa has most recently been assessed for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2018 and listed as Endangered under criteria A2bd. as numbers have declined by an estimated 52% (49-55%). Despite the SBOC systemic conservation efforts, optimization of the recovery actions to result to increased population of the angulate has not been explored. In reference to the 2021 population census, their numbers have been declining due to subsistence poaching and habitat loss caused by growing human settlements and overgrazing of livestock (Oryx Aerial Survey, 2021). To date, there isn’t much hard data on how many less-popular species lack direct conservation funding or assistance, but anecdotally, it’s a lot. If you look on IUCN’s website, you’ll see that there is no systematic monitoring scheme. This is not uncommon because there are so many species that need help and there is currently not enough time or resources. There are many species that are “data deficient,” meaning we just don’t even have enough data on them to really know what to do. When I searched “Beisa oryx” in Google Scholar, I was surprised to find very few papers on this species. Not much is known about the species composition, population sizes and densities of wildlife species in north-eastern Kenya. Banditry, inaccessibility due to poor roads and neglect (political and economic) from the Kenya Government have collectively contributed to the restricted ecological studies in this region. Moreover, subsequent pandemics; COVID 19, Ukrain War and severe and prolonged drought in northern Kenya have led to enhanced threats to the species, hence information availability is critical for planning, the national recovery action strategy development and knoweldege availabilit in e-libraries like Wikimedia.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

SBOC seeks USD 5000 from Wikimedia foundation to implement urgently the following strategies; Collaborative action status review; This strategy entails evaluation and description of current situation, including any relevant scientific data the endangered Beisa Oryx species. The local and scientific information will be collected through desk reviews, literature reviews and field data collection. Mostly the information to be collated will be the bio-information of the species, ecological and habitual characteristics, IUCN status information, other publications of the species, indigenous communities’ knowledge, habitat and pasture preference, current population status, current recovery actions in place, a feasibility analysis of and the current recovery action. Regional and National levels Stakeholders Workshops; To ensure validation of the data collected is done, the action will conduct a 60-membership local conservation stakeholder’s forum to validate the data and commission the draft recovery action as a local-regional recovery action strategy for the species. Then further, the action will support legislation-In cooperation of the new strategy locally and nationally. Prior this the action will conduct a 120 membership national conservation stakeholders’ workshop, that will validate and review further the availed information validated by the local stakeholder’s workshop. Involve All Approach and Project Sustenance; To ensure success of the collaborative process to develop a national recovery action strategy, the action will endeavor to involve all the stakeholders. Moreover, the action will contribute towards the recovery of the initiative and the conservancy from the detrimental effects of subsequent pandemics; COVID 19, Ukrain War and the severe drought, through enhancing Community policing and SBOC Ambassadors resilient habitat reforestation.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Conduct collaborative action status revies of endangered Beisa Oryx species and habitat, through an Evaluation and description of Beisa Oryx species’ current situation, including any relevant scientific data. Data Collating and standardizing of available Beisa Oryx species scientific metadata. A critical and inclusive analysis of scientific data and traditional knowledge and drafting of recovery action strategy for Beisa Oryx and Legislation-In cooperation of a 5-year recovery action strategy of Beisa Oryx through a regional and national stakeholders validation workshops. Then we will conduct actions to enhance community policing and SBOC Ambassadors habitat restoration initiative through, support to SBOC technical and operational gaps within staff, Recovery action Enforce rangers and the community Forest Monitoring and Management Scouts. The Rangers are dedicated to anti-poaching patrols and support to SBOC Ambassadors indigenous trees propagation nursery bank and contribute towards the annual community trees planting drive planting 25,000 trees annually with a target of 1,000,00 trees planted by 2030. These will be delivered through a practical framework approach of SBOC within Nakuprat-Gotu Community Conservancy, that comprises of 12 Recovery Action Enforce Rangers, 12 Community Forest Monitoring scouts and a network of 24 Conservation Ambassadors Self Help Groups that comprise 163 volunteers spread across the community conservancies.

A systematic evaluation of the status of the species through critical and inclusive analysis of scientific data and traditional knowledge through involvement of the communities and stakeholders. This study will result to availability of well collated scientific and local knowledge information of the endangered Beisa Oryx species to inform the development of a 5-year Kenya-National Recovery Action plan Strategy that intergrates community resilience in the recovery of the species..

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.
