6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

As the only certified trainer for the "Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom" program in Yemen(https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/Reading_Wikipedia_in_the_Classroom/Meet_our_Certified_Trainers) and having implemented the first phase of this program in Yemen in 2023 (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Reading_wikipedia_in_the_classroom_in_Yemen_2023)(https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/News/June_2023/Reading_Wikipedia_in_the_Classroom_Program_in_Yemen_Brings_Positive_Impact_to_Yemeni_Teachers) with the support of the Education team at the Wikimedia Foundation, I am now seeking to execute the second phase of this program in Yemen. The first phase was highly successful and was received positively by the participants (https://diff.wikimedia.org/2023/06/20/reading-wikipedia-in-the-classroom-program-in-yemen-brings-positive-impact-on-yemeni-teachers/).

The change I'm trying to bring and the main challenges or problems I'm trying to solve are:

Challenge #1. Addressing the devastating effects of the war on education in Yemen:

  - The current war in Yemen has severely impacted the education system, leading to a lack of basic resources like school desks, textbooks, and funding for teachers' salaries.
  - The education system in Yemen remains very traditional, with limited focus on developing 21st-century skills among students.

Challenge #2. Bridging the digital skills gap among teachers and students in Yemen:

  - Teachers in Yemen lack adequate digital skills and appropriate training, particularly in the digital field.
  - Students, on the other hand, have an increased interest in technology and the use of smartphones, creating a widening gap between the traditional education system and the students' technological perspectives.

To address these challenges, the main approaches I'm taking are:

Approach #1. Implementing the second phase of the "Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom" program in Yemen:

  - The program aims to target university students majoring in education (future teachers) and other interested volunteers.
  - The training will focus on teaching participants how to access, evaluate, and create information on Wikipedia, as well as how to integrate the use of Wikipedia within their classrooms.
  - This program will be the only local initiative in Yemen that provides exemplary training for teachers in digital/ICT skills, aligning with UNESCO's Media and Information Literacy (MIL) framework.

Approach #2. Establishing a new generation of Yemeni editors for the Arabic Wikipedia by training teachers and volunteers, the program aims to pave the way for the establishment of a new generation of Yemeni editors for the Arabic Wikipedia.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Implementing the second phase of the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom program (in-person) will require five months according to the following schedule of activities: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ZchpNo9VUN3dJMIAEJtn6eKvEsKPoDFxvFtV4hwRruw/edit?gid=431489883#gid=431489883

Partnerships: We have reached out to our partners who helped us last year and they have expressed their willingness to partner even better this year. We coordinated with the Google Developer Group in Sanaa (GDG Sana'a) to provide assistance with logistics and organization and were able to secure the equivalent of $759 in program implementation needs (as indicated in the budget). It was also agreed with the training center in which we will reserve the training place to reduce the reservation value from $214 to $92 per day (as shown in the budget), and as a cooperation from them, we will get the fourth day free of charge to organize the graduation ceremony for the trainees.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

The team will consist of 4 people: Certified Trainer and Lead Organizer: Me Co-trainer: (User: Mr.Ibrahem) Facilitators: (User: sabros514) (User: Rasheed) Both are graduates of the first phase of the Wikipedia reading in the classroom program.

Volunteers: When implementing the training, coordination will be made with our partner, the Google Developers Group in Sanaa (GDG Sana'a), to assist in the organization process.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

The activities of this project target future teachers who are still university students in education majors as well as those interested in learning about Wikipedia. This program will be announced using social media to reach the largest possible number of interested people, in addition to communicating directly with some universities that have expressed interest in such activities. We have a Facebook page specifically dedicated to the program activities which was used in the first phase last year. https://www.facebook.com/EduWikiYemen/
