Grant Proposal edit

M. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.

Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom for Senior High School Students in the Northern Region, Ghana

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Local

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

The Ministry of Education in Ghana places a high emphasis on ICT skills, but this does not stimulate the acquisition of digital literacy and Open Educational Resources (OERs). Senior High School students in the Kumbungu District have a low rate of media and information literacy, making it difficult for them to discern the truth from falsehoods online. This project will help address this by encouraging students to become more involved in the dissemination of accurate and trusted information on the web by utilizing Wikipedia, strengthening critical thinking abilities, taking advantage of Wikipedia and its related projects as Open Educational Resources, and learning new topics beyond their traditional school curriculum. Additionally, it will bridge the digital divide by motivating students to work together in order to strengthen their bonds.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Familiarize students with the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Framework to better comprehend the different phases of the information cycle.

Utilize a knowledge quest to teach students the core content policies of Wikipedia.

Furnish students with the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom quick guide to learn how to combine Wikipedia into their classroom activities.

Permit certified Teachers of Reading Wikipedia in the classroom (RWC) to incorporate their RWC lesson plan into regular classroom activities for their students.

Recruit and train secondary school students for the Eduwiki secondary school club in the Kumbungu District.

Incorporate or enhance local content on English Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikipedia Common.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Building Wikimedia awareness among Senior High School Students in Northern region will consist of four different sessions: Educating/Offline Onboarding Session, Creation of Awareness, Online Training Session, and Offline Training Session and edit-a-thon.

Through the Educating session, the students will be made aware of the various uses of the Wikimedia project and their perception of Wikipedia and other sister projects will be changed.

During the Offline Onboarding Session/ Creation of Awareness, the community will be sensitized on the projects of the Wikimedia Foundation.

During the Online Training Session, the participants will be taught how to improve or contribute content on Wikipedia and sister projects.

After that, the Offline Training Session and edit-a-thon session will be held, allowing the new editors to practice what they have learned.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Not applicable

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

I have put together an impressive and highly skilled team in the Kumbungu District with the necessary expertise to ensure a successful implementation of the program. This team consists of one certified trainer of the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom Program in Ghana. Furthermore, this team has in-depth knowledge of project management, organization, communication, the Wikimedia movement, and Wikipedia editing, as well as expertise in finance and partnerships. I have also taken the initiative to inform the Wikimedia Education Team about this project, and I am currently communicating with them.

6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Content Gender gap, Age (regency), Geography, Language

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

Most students are not familiar with Wikipedia and its sister projects, and have a limited understanding of how to efficiently access and collect information from Wikipedia, let alone evaluate or create information on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects. Therefore, this project will improve students' media and information literacy abilities, by utilizing Wikipedia and helping them to improve their critical thinking and become more adept at fact-checking.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Education, Advocacy, Open Technology, Diversity

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Geographic , Socioeconomic status, Digital Access

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

Our target audience is Senior High School students from three selected senior high schools in the Kumbungu District of Northern Region, Ghana, whose teachers had recently been certified in the first implementation of the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom program for teachers.

We shall be engaging these participants directly by involving the students, the secondary school authorities, the parents of the students, and the certified teachers. We shall be reaching out to the participants through effective local communication channels such as posters, social media, and outreach programs in their respective schools.

During the course of the project, I and the other members of the team shall be actively engaged in facilitating the training together with the certified teachers, to make sure that the participants understand how to contribute to Wikipedia and its sister projects.

We shall also be monitoring the activities of the new editors to ensure that Wikipedia and its sister projects are not vandalized out of ignorance.

In the end, a feedback survey shall be created for the students to fill out, and we shall be conducting a one-on-one interview with the certified teachers.

We shall be following up with the participants after the activities through social media platforms and daily check-ups with their teachers and school authorities.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

We will adopt and use The General friendly space policy for Wikimedia events and use it for this event.

11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.

Information of the project will be shared on Dallung Wikimedians Community WhatsApp group. Emails will be sent to invite Wikimedians to support/endorse this project.

12. Are you aware of other Rapid Fund proposals in your local group, community, or region that are being submitted and that align with your proposed project?

No

If yes:

12.1 Did you explore the possibility of doing a joint proposal with other leaders in your group?
N/A
12.2 How will this joint proposal allow you to have better results?
N/A
13. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedia partners to implement this proposal? Required.

Yes

13.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.

We are excited to collaborate with the School Authorities and their certified Teachers to ensure that the students are actively involved in the project. The School Authorities have already seen the value of Wikimedia projects in their classrooms, as Teachers from the School were part of the initial Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom, Ghana program. This program opened their eyes to the various uses, importance, and relevance of Wikimedia projects as a learning tool to promote quality education and life-long learning. The primary goal of training the Teachers in the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom program is to empower them to implement the lessons learned in their classroom activities. Engaging the students with the certified Teachers of the program will allow us to evaluate the impact of the training on their classroom activities, as the Teachers will be able to introduce the students to the use of Wikipedia and teach them how to raise their Media and Information Literacy skills.

14. In what ways do you think your proposal most contributes to the Movement Strategy 2030 recommendations. Select a maximum of THREE options that most apply.

Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement, Improve User Experience, Provide for Safety and Inclusion, Coordinate Across Stakeholders
