Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom

Many secondary schools in Nigeria especially government owned school lack adequate teaching and learning tools due to poor budget. They mostly rely on books in their libraries which are mostly outdated. There are usually no provision for online resources for both teachers and students. There is also no provision for continuous education for teachers. Consequently both teachers and students have little opportunity to improve themselves with current information. I have been a teacher in a government secondary schools from 1992 to date so I have personally been confronted with this challenge. To solve this challenge, we want to introduce Wikipedia as an OER for secondary schools in Nasarawa State through the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom programme. This is a professional training program designed by WMF for teachers to learn how to integrate Wikipedia as a learning tool into their classrooms and improve their media and information Literacy skills. The curriculum of this program is aligned with UNESCO’s Media and Information Literacy framework and it connects different approaches and methodologies used in the classroom to leverage the power of Wikipedia as a learning tool. It will provide them with an alternative format for learning new things outside the regular school curriculum while improving Wikipedia. We intend to organize this programme for teachers in a cluster schools located between Masaka and Mararaba towns in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. I have received a request from Topstar Nursery, Primary and Secondary School to carryout this programme for them and other schools. They have also offered to host the training. We will also be leveraging on my experience in organising such programme in Abuja and Onitsha in the recent past which proved to be very successful. As a certified trainer of Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom Programme, I will be leading this training. I will be supported by other certified trainers.

We will inform both government and private secondary schools located between Masaka and Mararaba towns of Nasarawa State that WMF will be organising the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom Programme for secondary school teachers and invite interested teachers to fill an online expression of interest google form. We will do this be writing the schools and circulating a flyer. We will also circulate the link to the form in different platforms popular within the area including in Facebook, WhatsApp etc. Topstar Nursery, Primary and Secondary School has expressed interest to collaborate with us by hosting the training. We expect to receive more than 80 filled forms. From the received forms, we will chose 50 best applicants bearing in mind criteria like teachers that have a smart phone or Lab-top; that have an idea of how to browse the internet etc. We will prepare and situate the training manual in line with the standard curriculum and training documents as prepared for the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom Programme by the Wiki Education Team. More specifically, we will be using the curriculum that we adapted for the Reading Wikipedia in Classroom training in Onitsha Anambra State which i lead Reading_Wikipedia_in_the_Classroom_in_Anambra_State. There will be 4 physical sessions and several online sessions. It will commence with an opening ceremony where key government and other officials in the education sector will be invited to make short statements. The training will involve teaching teachers how to use Wikipedia as a learning tool in the classroom and improve their media and information Literacy skills. It will also introduce them to Wikipedia and how to edit and contribute to the different projects. There will also be assignments. The assignments will be assessed and marked by the Wiki Education team headed by Mrs Mellissa Guadalupe. When the assignments of the participants have been assessed, the successful ones will be issued certificates in accordance with the programme of the education team. The 4th physical session will be the graduation and closing ceremony. The programme will be carried out with a close supervision of the Wiki Education Team.

Mrs Oby Ezeilo Oby Ezeilo. She is a Certified Trainer of the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom Program. She is a member of Wikipedia and Education User Group, co-founder Igbo Wikimedia User Group; founding member Wiki for Senior Citizens Network; a founding member and Coodinator of Eduwiki Nigeria and a project facilitator for Wiki Vibrance. She will be the lead trainer and will be paid for her service. Oluoha Jane Janebliss.She will be the Co-trainer and Data Analyst. She is a member of Wikimedia User Group Nigeria and Eduwiki Nigeria. She participated in the pilot training session of Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom Abuja programme where I was the Lead trainer. She will be paid for her service. Evelyn Akumegbunam Akum20 She will be the Communication Assistant. She is a member of Wikimedia User group Nigeria, Eduwiki Nigeria, Igbo Wikimedia User group and Wiki For Senior Citizens Network. The target participants are teachers who are teaching in secondary schools located between Masaka and Mararaba in Nasarawa State of Nigeria. This is a heavily populated and dense area occupied mostly by low income individuals. We are carrying this programme in collaboration with Top Star Nursery, Primary and Secondary School. They have confirmed to us that 3 other secondary schools in the area have shown interest in participating. However, we will reach out to all other schools in the area by writing to them, visiting them and sharing fliers of the programme. We will also advertise the invitation for interested teachers to fill an online google application form. 50 teachers will be selected from all applicants. We will form a whatsapp group of all participants and facilitators where we will continue to track their progress and encourage them. After the programme, we will encourage all graduates to join our education group in Nigeria EduWiki_Nigeria In this group we discuss and encourage members to participate in different Wikipedia educational activities. We also encourage members to continue contributing to Wikipedia especially in educational programmes. The graduates will also be urged to join the larger whatsapp group of members of the Eduwiki Nigeria where teachers also share their experiences on introducing Wikipedia in the classroom in their different schools and learn from each other.

I had earlier led similar trainings for teachers in Abuja and Onitsha. From my experience in these two programmes, i found out that teachers were able to learn and connect more with the programme when we teach in native language. Furthermore, from experience we gathered from the Abuja programme, I modified the training brochure and adapted the lesson plan to the local curriculum and teaching practice. This modified lesson plan was highly accepted by the teachers and they started using same in their schools. In this programme, we will use a combination of English and local languages. I am keen to find out whether they will also prefer discussions in the local languages. Also I will want to find out how they will accept the modified lesson plan that was well accepted by teachers in Onitsha. In addition, I look forward to finding out how they will accept Wikipedia as an OER and whether they are happy to continue editing We will conduct a post survey to find out whether they like the RWIC programme, whether they will adopt Wikipedia in their classroom and any challenges they anticipate in doing so.
