1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

This project was a call from some communication lecturers in the online space after viewing our engagement with the teachers of secondary schools that were trained. It is critical for communication students to improve their media and information literacy skills and also know how to use Wikipedia to do their assignments and research work, which will in turn help them be more detailed with their research work and critical thinking. Communication students in Nigeria need to read Wikipedia in their classrooms because this will help them improve their skills in terms of accessing accurate information by fighting misinformation and disinformation with their work. How do they know what to report as communication students? Without the media, how can we document our information effectively on Wikipedia? We need the media to help us reach our goal of having the world access accurate information. A well-informed media creates a well-informed society. Without the communication students learning and knowing the importance and nitty-gritty of misinformation and disinformation, we might still be struggling with inaccurate information on Wikipedia. Today, we need students in the communication system to know the importance of Wikipedia and its use in their classrooms to enhance accurate information systems for the public. This knowledge gap is huge and the reason why this is so is that much of our notable information that was not online, is now in the archive. Who will bring it out of the archives? Who will document it on Wikipedia? This is a significant gap and challenge, but communication students can make a difference. They can begin to fill that gap; they already know how to search the archives. To fill this gap, they must understand what Wikipedia is and its significance to human existence.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Introducing communication students to the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Framework as a pedagogical tool to understand the different stages involved in the information cycle.

  • Teach the students the importance of Wikipedia which is critical to information systems using the reading Wikipedia in the classroom course outline on the wiki learn platform
  • Provide students with the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom quick guide to learn how to integrate Wikipedia into their classroom activities. How? Knowing how to report and write from a reliable source, and doing in-depth research as communication students.
  • Allow and ensure some of the certified teachers practice collaboration and implementation by being a part of and process of the project.
  • Training and recruiting communication students across the state for the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom club in Lagos State.
  • Adding or improving local content on English Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikipedia Common. A need assessment survey has been conducted in other to have an impactful project, this is a link to the analysis of the needs assessment survey https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zBwHBzItjo9KijFRw0SX2s7SSPKJt5RgR_68s9DbBns/edit?usp=sharing

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

The training is broken down into 3 modules. The student will be using the Wikilearn platform and the course content for Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom. We are already localizing the Wikilearn platform for the students because the course outline and content align with what communication students should know and be doing which is researching, accessing, creating, and distributing from a reliable source while also knowing how to contribute to Wikipedia because they need a final place where all the notable work of the media will be documented without the fear of domain name expiration and hosting. They will also learn how to use

  • Wikipedia
  • Wikidata
  • Wikicommons.

These are tools that are critical and important for communication students.

We will ensure:
  • Creating awareness amongst the communication institutions in Lagos State.
  • Educating the student on the various uses of the Wikimedia project and trying to change their negative perception of Wikipedia and its sister projects.
  • Online Onboarding Session: This is a one-on-one onboarding session for the participants which will be a prelude to the event to sensitize the participants about the project.
  • Online Training Session: The students would be guided on how to finish their course module on the Wikilearn platform and also they will be taught how to use and contribute content on Wikipedia, wikidata, and wikicommons.
  • Offline Training Sessions, opening ceremony, and graduation ceremony: There will be an Edit-a-thon during the online training session. The offline training session has an opening ceremony which is training them on how to navigate the wikilearn platform and start module one. the graduation ceremony is the conclusion of the program and certificates will be awarded.

During the project, I and the team members will be actively involved in facilitating the training, together with the certified teachers to make sure that the participants get the act and art of contributing to Wikipedia and its sister projects. We will monitor the activities of the new editors to make sure that Wikipedia and the other sister projects are not vandalized out of ignorance.

We will follow up with the participants after the activities through mentoring and check-up on the WhatsApp platform. Also during the program there will be a need assessment survey. At the end, the project will create a feedback survey for the students to fill and hold a one-on-one interview with some of the certified students.

Are they writing from a reliable source? What is their perception about Wikipedia? What are the best techniques used to encourage students to participate and contribute to Wikimedia projects?
