The education system in Nigeria lacks MIL skills and the use of OERs by teachers in the country. The introduction of Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom pilot program will contribute to solving these impending challenges and address the need to use Wikipedia to foster media and information Literacy skills in Osun State. RWIC has recorded a successful implementation in creating awareness about digital literacy skills in some states like Kwara, Abuja, and Lagos State.

The Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom program is aligned with the MIL Framework of UNESCO. Organizing this training program as the first pilot training program for educational practitioners in Osun state will help to introduce the use of OERs (Open Educational Resources) to the education system where the teachers and other education stakeholders will benefit from the project using Wikipedia as a learning tool in the classroom. UNESCO advocates for data-informed policies and decision-making in Education, Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom program ensures that the media, information literacy framework elaborates the integration of best practices to explore how Wikimedia projects can advance and encourage knowledge sharing and service as a pedagogical tool and accessibility to free knowledge across board.

I was able to co-facilities as a volunteer for Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom Program in Kwara State and you can find more about it here. https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/09/03/wikimedia-unesco-and-the-kwara-state-government-united-to-improve-media-literacy-among-teachers-in-nigeria/ In the 3rd cohort of Reading Wikipedia Train of Trainers, I completed the ToT led by the Education team and are now a Certified Trainer of the program, I have the knowledge and tools to implement the pilot effectively and also conduct training for teachers on how to Use Wikipedia in the classroom room, you can find more about it here. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/Reading_Wikipedia_in_the_Classroom/Meet_our_Certified_Trainers The Education Team of the Wikipedia Foundation provided us with the Teacher's guide in line with the UNESCO MIL framework which will be localized and adapted to train the teachers and educators in Osun State. Training teachers in Osun State on open educational resources and using Wikipedia as a pedagogical approach will enable the inclusion of localized learning resources and also provide quality education with the use of the teacher's guide and it is the first pilot program in Osun State. This project aims to bring awareness to the essential skills and competencies that educators need to possess in the 21st century to become experts in their fields. These include digital literacy skills, pedagogical skills, research skills, and critical thinking skills, all of which are crucial for skills development. This will also bring about diversity in content creation strategically.

The model/platform we are using to facilitate training integrates Open Educational Resources and materials into the curriculum, providing added value to the teachers as a guide to support the training. Find more about the training guide here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Education/Reading_Wikipedia_in_the_Classroom

This training is in line with the three components of UNESCO's Media and Information literacy Framework. The impact of the program is to assist teachers to freely use, adapt and also re-write educational materials without worrying about copyright infringement. This training will also support teachers and educators to assist students in the classroom to develop vital skills needed in the 21st-century and also give teachers free resources in an effective way. I have a connection to a network of trainers that I can reach out to for support and also I am in touch with Wiki Education team and will be able to offer the necessary support during the implementation. We will be recruiting 50 teachers as a trainer for the Reading Wikipedia in the classroom program, as well as Wikipedia editors across different communities in Osun State. This will enable the full participation of the teachers in the first pilot of certified trainers within Osun State. The Ministry of Education will also be in attendance for monitoring and evaluation purposes to ensure that the teachers attend the blended training sessions, both the physical and online meetings, complete their learning processes and assignments. 5 members will be representing the Ministry of Education.

Evaluation activities for the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom Osun pilot program serve two primary purposes. Second, we evaluate to seek out ways to improve our program methods.

Guiding Evaluative Questions

How do participating teachers understand the value of Wikipedia for education? How many participants have employed a lesson plan developed in the RWIC program for use in their own teaching? What learning outcomes do lesson plans support? How can the RWIC in Osun, Nigeria program be improved for future iterations?

Main instruments used will include online survey with questions that pair with the needs assessment survey to measure the change in participants attitudes about the value of Wikipedia.
