In Namibia, the teachers are not digitally trained teachers for a 21st-century children. They still use the whiteboard markers, and they are not equipped with using OERS to teach and improve their teaching methods and update their teaching resources and materials. They are stacked with the old method of textbooks only without adding online resources.

Many teachers do not even know about Wikipedia not to talk of using it to train in their classrooms which is supposed to help build their media and information literacy skills. These teaching methodologies are not in place in Namibia.

Through this program, This program is aimed at introducing Wikipedia as a teaching-learning tool, particularly to the selected teachers. we aim to create a pilot phase to capacitate a few selected Life Skills teachers on the importance of OERs which will help improve the media and information literacy skills of the teachers using Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom which is in accordance with the UNESCO framework. This will help teachers and learners to access, analyze, and create information, and help them improve their research skills, reflect on the information they have, and become champions of information verifications. Additionally the life skills teachers will be taught on how to use reading Wikipedia in the classrooms to convey messages and information on mental health, psychosocial support, coping strategies on self harm, as well as addiction and substance abuse in schools.

At the end of this program we will create a community of teachers that can use Reading Wikipedia in their Classroom as an important learning resource for their students. The club will be RWIC Club in Namibia.

Through this approach and program, the teachers will receive adequate knowledge and skills on how to multiply the knowledge they gain with their learners.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

This 3-month program which will be blended. It is online and physical training. We will have three phases of the implementation which are:

The planning stage: 1st August- 31st of August:

We will be sending out letters to all identified schools, through the Ministry of Education, notifying them of the intended date for the implementation and we will send out a needs assessment form to the these schools. Two weeks will be allocated for this assessment and we will be collecting the names of the identified teachers for the training.

We will send emails to follow-up with selected teachers for confirmation and a Whatsapp group will be created for the participants and trainers.

Selected high ranking officials from the regional office of the Ministry of Education will also be identified to be part of the training. An exco platform will be created and a series of trainings for the exco will be provided by the trainers. We will create our social media handles and promote the program across all our social media platforms 7.2 Implementation Stage: August 1st to September 1st : Day 1 : Opening Ceremony, Introductory training session and Module 1 Day 2: Module 2 Day 3: Module 3 Day 4: Mental health session Day 5: Graduation Ceremony

Additionally, it will consist of experts from Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture, making sure that there is an element of national context within the school curriculum. we hope to foster an understanding of how to navigate curriculums online by having practical examples during the training and how to interact with Wikipedia articles through using them as references, editing them, identifying them, and eventually creating new knowledge.

These sessions will give the participants and trainers an opportunity to interact with one another, and understand immediate challenges, which will help in monitoring the progress of the teachers.

For this pilot phase we shall select teachers from five different Secondary schools in the Omaheke region, the reason behind this is to make sure that teachers from different schools will bring in their individual and school teaching approaches as well as to become multipliers of these programs in their respective schools. Omaheke region is identified because we have a high rate of marginalized learners, from the San community who may have not been exposed to internet, smartphone etc. and who are dropping out of school at a high rate. This training may help the teachers assist the San learners from their schools to envision the world differently and complete school with a new burst of excitement for the future.

The mental health training will equip the teachers on the various element of learners, self-harm, coping strategies and how to assist with curbing substance abuse challenges within their schools and communities at large. We envision those teachers to lead the change towards the adoption of using Wikipedia as a pedagogical tool in the classrooms in their schools. We are reliant on their motivation to engage the leaders in their schools and networks to understand the importance of the program and convey the necessity of integrating digital mediums of learning in their teaching.

This is crucial as the teachers deal with learners dealing with mental health challenges and this may cause a delay in understanding any new information, thus training on how to assist learners to grasp better from a psychological aspect will be addressed to make the process easier and not harder for them. Secondly she will guide on how to assist with coping mechanism, substance abuse , self-harm strategies for the teachers. She will be handling training, evaluation, and monitoring of the project and she will be paid Josaphat Tjiho- He is the project lead, a certified Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom trainer, and an experienced trainer on media and information literacy. 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

Our target participants are Secondary school teachers from five different schools in Gobabis, Omaheke Region. These are teachers who teach life skills subjects.

Before the program, We will provide expression of interest forms to the schools for the teachers to fill in. During the training, we will capture images and videos of the teacher's experience and inputs for our social media as well as for monitoring. Additionally, we will have one-on-one online sessions and mentoring sessions with the teachers during the program to get insights into their experiences and suggestions. Before the onboarding, we will create a WhatsApp group for follow-up, mentoring, and our social media platforms.

Learning and metrics

edit
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

The main reason for this task is to help the Namibian child reach maximum potential through all platforms presented to them, both paper and pen and online through Wikimedia. Learners are using social media platforms for recreational purposes (etc dancing, jokes skits etc) but never for the advancement of their future or research purposes. Additionally we hope to have a better understanding on the challenges that both the teachers and learners faces in Gobabis and how the incorporation of mental health and RWIC can assist both the teachers and the learners to advance and perform better academically. Finally we hope to have a clear understanding on the challenges that the ministry at large faces from their expert and how the RWIC program can assist with mitigating those challenges.

We aim to have a multistakeholderal approach (Teachers, learners, ministry) to have a better understanding on challenges on the ground and how collectively we can contribute to the development of our learners in the country.
