1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

On February 6th, 2023 an earthquake struck Kahramanmaraş and surrounding cities in southeastern Turkey, including Adana, Adıyaman, Diyarbakır, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye, and Şanlıurfa. The earthquake also affected parts of Syria. This region is known for its rich historic and archaeological significance, as well as its tangible and intangible heritage elements. This earthquake also damaged a vast majority of cultural heritage related sites, monuments and historic buildings, libraries and museums too. It’s followed by a flood disaster on 13th of March which further damaged the museum building in Urfa. This project firstly aims at putting the knowledge resources related to the cultural memory institutions (GLAM: galleries, libraries, archives and museums) and immovable cultural heritage (e.g. ancient sites, archaeological excavations, monuments, historic buildings e.g. mosques, synagogues etc) in the region. In order to do this we would like to work together for all internet users including Wikimedians who will improve Wikimedia projects on those topics. The second aim is creating awareness on the significance of open knowledge for the people working in this field and encouraging them to contribute to wiki projects using the sources in the repository. The knowledge of many of those cultural assets are not covered well in Wikimedia projects if they have been covered at all. To address this, we're creating a resource repository to help volunteers add missing information to Wikimedia projects especially in Turkish, particularly Wikidata, Commons and Wikipedia; It also aims to train GLAM people about open knowledge and encourage them to share their resources through Wikimedia projects. This project is important to increase awareness of Wikimedia projects and contributions among people in the GLAM field in Türkiye.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Our first strategy is creating a repository of resources about the cultural heritage and GLAM institutions in the 11-cities region; our second strategy is building skills in adding the relevant knowledge to Wikimedia projects. For this project, the team decided that they will not be putting any demand in any form from the people (e.g. librarians and museum professionals) in the area. Because we respect their loss and reorganize their lives. Gathering information for the region will not include the current state of the cultural assets in the region, aim is to put together relevant resources related to the missing data in the Wikimedia projects about their previous status; as well as building participants’ skills to add those information in Wikimedia projects. Open data is also related with reuse and copyrights and it is an issue for cultural heritage. In this project we would like to collaborate with CC Türkiye in order to give information to participants and GLAM institutions about the importance of open data and CC licenses. Previous statements of the cultural heritage data for the region can be gathered from the other GLAM institutions in Türkiye that are working in cities other than natural disaster areas. Universities, GLAM institutions, NGO’s have lots of data from the region that is collected by many researchers, individuals, NGO’s etc. With this project we would like to have meetings with groups [e.g. ÜNAK (University and Research Librarians’ Association), TKD (Turkish Librarians' Association, ANKOS (Anatolian University Libraries Consortium), Müzeder (Museum Professionals Association) or research institutes e.g. ANAMED (Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations), BIAA (British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara ), ARIT (The American Research Institute in Turkey, DAI (German Archeological Institute) etc, …] to increase awareness about wikimedia and open data also to create knowledge areas to share their information from the earthquake area.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Creating a repository of resources strategy involves following activities; preparation of the list of organizations that will be contacted; We will organize online talks and in person visits to GLAM institutions; creating a list of assets, sites and libraries, museums in order to create and improve the repository wiki page. In order to do list the excel lists will be prepared with relevant metadata information with the help of archivists. The information of cultural assets, sites, libraries and museums for the region will be organised and verified with relevant resources with the help of contacted stakeholders (e.g. the organizations mentioned in section 2. and one civil society from the region HAYAP (Hatay Yeniden Ayakta Platformu). Building skills in adding the relevant knowledge to Wikimedia projects involves two online edit-a-thon and two in person edit-a-thons at Ankara and Istanbul. We planned edit-a-thons as training activities followed by hands-on sessions for contributing to wiki projects on the topic. The two cities where most of the organizations that will be contacted for the repository are based are Istanbul and Ankara therefore we planned in person activities there. We also planned online activities which participants across the country could join.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Geography, Other global topics for impact (topics considered to be of global importance), Cultural background, ethnicity, religion, racial

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

Cultural institutions and heritage at 11 cities hit by the 2023 Türkiye-Syria earthquake in Türkiye are poorly covered Wikimedia projects. The project supports efforts to fill the gap now and in the future as it provides a resource repository that could be used in developing content. Trainings and editathons we will increase the awareness and capacity about citizen science activities about cultural heritage both for students and cultural heritage professionals and scholars.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Not applicable

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

Target participants are GLAM professionals and relevant stakeholders, students across Türkiye and cultural heritage professionals. Our team consists of members of Dijital Kültürel Miras Ağı (Digital Cultural Heritage Network)* and includes some volunteers, experts and students working on protecting digital cultural heritage. The group will contact the target people using their connections from vocational and students association connections. With this project we will be able to reach students, women and volunteers who are working for the cultural sector. The organizations mentioned in section 2, NGO’s representatives will also benefit from this project. During the project we will organize online and in person meetings and edit-a-thons to engage with partners and visit several institutes. After the activities with this project we can also continue to organize online meetings and continue to discuss. Our volunteers can continue to add and edit content to Wikimedia and we can make announcements via our social media in order to continue to interact between participants.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

Project team knows each other and has been working voluntarily together. We will create a safer and friendly space for team members and participants within the project and not allow discrimination. There will be a facilitator throughout the project in person meetings. In this way we will provide friendly space for people with disabilities and fewer opportunities. Online meetings and edit-a-thons will also allow us to give opportunities to connect with people not living in Ankara and Istanbul.
