There are around 60,000+ of cultural heritage sites and tangible artefacts in the last count cited from the Indonesian government in 2013.1 Of those numbers, it is unclear how many are available in Wikipedia and Wikidata, and also has its documentations in Wikimedia Commons. The same thing may also be said for 554 natural protected areas.2 Our initial assessment in Wikidata counted 547 items of Indonesian cultural heritages, of which only around 96 has the image (P18) statement.3 Meanwhile, of the 280 natural heritage areas in Indonesia in Wikidata, only 91 have the image statement.4 Pages for these artefacts, sites, and areas are also lacking in pictures in its Wikipedia articles like this: example 1, or having a picture of another artefact like this example 2, or has only one picture but it is an old, grainy picture from the colonial era such as this example 3, or actually has some pictures but only one from the modern era with the others being old pictures or the picture of its replica like this example 4. Some don’t even have pictures, items, and articles at all. For comparison, other countries like the United States have around 5,000+ natural and culturally protected areas in Wikidata with 3,400+ of them having images.5

We are trying to bring changes to this by enriching the information of natural and cultural heritages in Indonesia in Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Commons. Similar projects have been done and approved in the past in West Bengal, India and in Tunisia. As Wikidata is going to also be involved in this project, the reuse of the information will be available throughout Wikimedia projects.

We are planning to do the pilot in the region of the Regency of Bogor, City of Bogor, and City of Depok, three administrative regions just south of the capital city of Jakarta. These regions combined already have a total of 8 natural protected areas (NPA) of national level and dozens of protected cultural sites and artefacts. We use the official registry of NPA from the Ministry of Forestry and the Environment. For the cultural heritages, we use this data from the Reference Data of the Ministry of Education and Culture. We have curated the locations here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AOv_tXKLtFpyAtaGO1e7HPaLaollMxw4Jxk9I5SPNeo/edit?usp=sharing and found 34 locations to be visited and documented.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

We will conduct field surveys consisting of visits and documentation of the 34 locations. Multiple pictures will be taken for each location and a minimum of eight of these pictures are then going to be selected to be uploaded into Wikimedia Commons. The uploaded pictures are then going to be selected again to be featured on the Wikipedia article and/or the Wikidata item of the location. In the case of a heritage that does not have a Wikipedia article (English, Indonesian, or Sundanese [the local language of Bogor]) and a Wikidata item, we are going to create a Wikidata item for it. As the cultural heritages are of different status (national, municipal) we are also planning to harmonise the ontology of the Wikidata items by using P1435 (heritage designation) instead of the national and P8325 (whose website shows 500 server error code as of 2023-10-28). We are hoping to use all the eight pictures but we do not want the articles or the items to be a sea of pictures. Different aspects of the heritage therefore are going to be documented, like a focus view of a stone inscription vs. the view of its yard. For the stone inscriptions, we will also see whether they already have a facsimile in supporting literature (e.g. H.C. Kern’s ‘’Verspreide Geschriften’’ which is in the public domain already). A reproduction of the facsimile will be created with support of the pictures that we will have taken.

A dashboard of natural and cultural heritages will be created consisting of a GeoJSON file of the coordinates and a gallery with links to Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Commons which is then going to be used for the presentation to the community.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.
