There is a general lack of awareness about neurodivergence in society, which is also evident on platforms like Wikipedia. This lack of understanding isn't confined to the general public but also extends to the scientific and mental health communities, where even experts often lack a comprehensive grasp of the subject. In an up-to-date encyclopedia, it's crucial that these topics are well-represented and accessible. Neurodivergent individuals, particularly women, and girls, often experience significant discrimination, impacting their quality of life. Many are not even fully aware of their neurodivergence. Having such information readily available on platforms like Wikipedia could enable not only neurodivergent individuals but also healthcare professionals and medical students to better understand the subject. This would foster a community capable of making informed criticisms, developing diagnostic criteria, and moving away from outdated perceptions, thereby improving the visibility of the experiences of neurodivergent individuals. Intersectionality is another significant aspect of neurodiversity. Women and non-binary individuals are frequently overlooked when it comes to diagnoses, with the focus often skewed toward boys. Exploring and understanding these intersectional elements is crucial, requiring both the creation and discussion of theoretical knowledge and the generation of insights from the community. This would enable a more comprehensive understanding of the diverse impacts and experiences of neurodiversity. We have seen that English Wikipedia has created a set of high-quality articles about neurodiversity-related information, such as the article about autism. We want to create similar pages on the Turkish Wikipedia and add in the expertise of Turkish-language resources. Along with contributing to the Turkish Wikipedia, our main aim will be forming a long-lasting community that we foresee can be turned into a user group around neurodiversity on Wikipedia so that the outputs of this project extend beyond the timeline of this project. We are also hoping this community can provide inside into making Wikimedia more inclusive for neurodivergent individuals.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

We are planning an 8 week event series. This will consist of:

  • 4 Zoom meetings
  • 2 physical meetings
  • 2 interviews, one with an activist, one with a professional

The Zoom meetings will be contain these, spread out as needed:

Ice breakers, Wikipedia training, presentations, edit-a-thons, discussions about neurodiversity and gender, finding progressive resources. One of the outputs of the edit-a-thons will be a Wikiproject page for Neurodiversity in Turkish.

The physical meetings will also consist of the things given above, but will have an aspect that focuses more on socializing as well. We plan to make one of the physical meetings the last event of the series to end the project with a grand finale. The other one will likely take place during the middle parts of the project.

The interviews will also be conducted on Zoom. One of them will be in Turkish, the other one will be in English. The English interview will be transcribed into both languages, translated and dubbed into Turkish. Both of these will be published through a Youtube channel (With a CC license) and on Commons.

There will be an active contest throughout the entirety of the project. The winners, people who have contributed the most, will get either cash prizes or gifts.

We also plan to reach out to certain organizations that could help us in these activities.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

Our target audience is mainly women-aligned neurodivergent people. We also want to reach professionals that work in the fields of neurodiversity. We also want gender studies students, psychology students, and other people who may show interest in this project.

We will publicize our project on social media and on Wikipedia. We will reach organizations that work with neurodivergent people or that focus on creating information about neurodivergence. We also want to reach out to gender related or psychology related clubs and faculties of universities.

We will follow up with the group through the Telegram chat we will have created. We will also have a Wikiproject about neurodiversity that we hope to keep active. We also want this project to be the backbone of a potential international group of Wikipedians interested in neurodiversity. The creation of an online community is outside the scope of this project, but this project will provide a solid foundation for future attempts at creating one.
