1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

As per the Government of Education, India is home to 1600+ mother tongues. India has about 447 established languages and is fourth by most number of languages spoken in a country across the world. And we strongly believe that Building content in Smaller Indian languages is paramount to conserve and develop these languages.

Kolami is a Dravidian indigenous language spoken in parts of Telangana and Maharashtra states of India. Kolami is spoken by 44000 people in Telangana, India. This language is one of the most under-resourced languages spoken in India. There is no mass media in the language and there was no education in the language until recently. With the introduction of New Education Policy in India, primary education in mother tongue is getting encouraged and it is a good time to prepare Kolami for the same. Government of Telangana has put continuous efforts in building Foundational literacy content for students of this community, the government has produced some books for early school education in recent times. It's high time to build content in the Kolami language, this helps the Kolam community with access to world knowledge.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

The Kolam speaking community is mostly concentrated in the northern part of Telangana, India. The community has about 44000 population in the state and the number of native speakers are going down day by day. We will be coordinating with Kolam Community and the local literary organization Utnoor Sahithi Vedika to bring awareness in the community to bring up content on Wikimedia projects especially Kolami Wikipedia. We will also be working on bringing up Images and Videos related to Kolam Culture and tradition.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

A three day workshop will be hosted in Adilabad region of Telangana. A page will be created on Meta and Kolami Wikipedia(incubator) to post relevant information regarding happenings in the Awareness and content Building activities of Kolami Wikipedia. Any information relevant to the project will be communicated to all the users through the Village pump and Social media handles of Kolami Wikipedia.

We have identified topics related to Kolam culture, tradition, practices and geographical locations to build content of local importance on Kolami Wikipedia. In the 3 day workshop We will be working with the community and youth to build content and awareness about Wikimedia projects and the importance of open source knowledge in the local language.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Not applicable

We are a team of 4 volunteers 1)User:Nskjnv(Myself) 2)User:Mothiram 123 3) User:Athram Rajkumar 4)User:Jangu madavi

We are working on building Southeastern Kolami Wikipedia from August 2022. It took about two months for me (User:Nskjnv) to discuss the importance of free knowledge and building content in the local language for the Kolami community. After several meetings Mothiram, a writer by profession from the Kolami community, started volunteering to build content. Later we conducted an in person event for the Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos campaign from Telugu Wikipedia to bring awareness about Wikimedia and helped them participate in the WPWP(Telugu) local campaign in October 2022. Till date we have 10+ enthusiasts, 4 active editors and about 72 pages in different name spaces are created within a span of 4 months on the Kolami Wikipedia incubator version.

The writers and youth will be trained to edit on Wikimedia platforms and we will encourage the youth to involve in learning essential writing skills from Kolami writers. While writers and youth are the major target audience, small pockets of knowledge will be collected in the form of audios from senior citizens who are proficient in language. We will also try to collect some documentaries of Kolam culture from a rural backdrop to be uploaded on Wikimedia Commons.

Participants will be encouraged for continuous participation on Kolami Wikipedia by making them realize the importance of localization of knowledge.
