Ionian Wikithon is a satellite event of the Wikimedia Hackathon and has taken place the last two years, 2022 and 2023, in Corfu, Greece. Ionian Wikithon 2024 will be the 3rd iteration of this event, which main aim is to strengthen and extend the wikimedia community's ties with the students of the Ionian University and the Department of Informatics in particural. One of our challenges is to welcome and engage more students and volunteers to join the wikimedia community and become active and regular users. This satellite event will prepare students of the Ionian University and individuals to participate and attend the Wikimedia Hackathon 2024 and provide them the opportunity to share their experience after the Hackathon. It will also provide the opportunity to students, developers and academics to share experience and knowledge and acquire new skills. Specifically we aim to:

  • recruit new editors inviting them to participate in a series of events and workshops
  • train existing and new editors in a)the Wikimedia Phabricator, b)the SPARQL query language and Wikidata Query Service and c)the PAWS/Jupyter notebooks for Python beginners
  • inspire individuals and teams to work on new projects and ideas

An overarching goal of the Ionian Wikithon is to strengthen the partnership among Wikimedia Foundation and academia. The Ionian Wikithon 2024 will also be one of the events that will take place for the 20th anniversary of the Dept. of Informatics, Ionian University. This event is co-organized by the Networks, Multimedia and Security Systems Laboratory, Dept. of Informatics in collaboration with Dr. Eleni Christopoulou and Dr. Dimitrios Ringas, members of the lab teaching staff of the Department of Informatics, Ionian University and the Wikimedia Foundation / Wikimedia Community Greece, in collaboration with Marios Magioladitis, long standing Wikipedian and president of the Wikimedia Community Greece.
