6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

The project seeks to bring about a significant change in Hausa Wikipedia by addressing critical challenges. The main objective is to enhance both the quality and quantity of articles, specifically focusing on areas like biographies, geography, culture, and history. These improvements aim to counter issues such as lack of references, notability, and poor translation, which often lead to articles being targeted for deletion.

The primary challenge identified is the presence of new editors on Hausa Wikipedia with limited knowledge of Wikipedia editing, contributing to a concentration on article creation rather than improvement. To overcome this challenge, the project will implement a comprehensive strategy. This includes organizing both offline and online training sessions to equip participants with the necessary skills for article enhancement. Additionally, a writing contest will be conducted to incentivize participants to apply their newfound skills and actively contribute to the improvement of identified article categories.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

My project aims to improve the quality and quantity of articles on Hausa Wikipedia. The main challenges or problems I am trying to solve are the lack of references, notability, and good translation of many articles that are targeted for deletion, as well as the low level of editing skills and awareness among Hausa Wikipedia editors. To achieve this goal, I will organize the following activities:

  • Two days of physical training and two days of online training for 50 participants, covering the topics of references, notability, and translation. The training sessions will use a mix of lectures, demonstrations, exercises, and feedback to teach the participants how to improve the articles on Hausa Wikipedia.
  • One month of writing contest, where the participants will apply their skills and contribute to Hausa Wikipedia by improving the bytes, references, and standard Hausa of the articles. The contest will have prizes for the best submissions, based on the quality and quantity of the articles improved.
  • Follow-up and evaluation, where I will send certificates of participation, thank-you notes, and surveys to the participants, monitor their editing activities on Hausa Wikipedia, and provide them with guidance and support. I will also report the results and outcomes of the project to the Wikimedia Foundation and the community.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

Their expertise in Hausa language and Wikipedia editing, combined with their commitment as volunteers, ensures a comprehensive and effective approach to both offline and online training sessions and the subsequent writing contest.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

The target participants of my project are existing and potential Hausa Wikipedia editors. The project aims to reach at least 50 participants, with a balanced representation of gender, age, and location. However, the project especially focuses on the active Hausa Wikipedia editors, who have made at least 50 edits in the past six months, and who are interested in improving their skills and contributing to the quality and quantity of articles on Hausa Wikipedia.

To engage participants before and during the activities, I will use various channels, such as social media, email, phone calls, and word-of-mouth, to promote the project and invite them to register. I will also create a project page on Hausa Wikipedia, where I will provide the details of the project, the schedule of the training sessions, the rules and criteria of the writing contest, and the contact information of the team members. During the training sessions, I will encourage participants to interact with each other and the facilitators, ask questions, share feedback, and practice their skills. I will also monitor and evaluate the progress and satisfaction of the participants.

To follow up with participants after the activities, I will send them certificates of participation, thank-you notes, and surveys to evaluate the project. I will also monitor their editing activities on Hausa Wikipedia and provide them with guidance and support if needed.
