Hiring research assistants who will add missing references to scholarly research articles to the the English version of Wikipedia

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Local

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

There is a growing believe that Wikipedia is an important source for scientist who search for information. However, scholarly research indicates that the number of referenced articles in Wikipedia is far from large (e.g., Kousha and Thelwall, 2017 discover that only 5% of the articles they analyze have, at least, one reference in Wikipedia, suggesting that relatively few articles are cited in Wikipedia).

As part of a greater research project, we plan to run a task in which we will add to the English version of Wikipedia new and missing references linking to scholarly articles (around a thousand new references to scholarly articles). This will improve the quality of hundreds of articles and will improve Wikipedia overall by making its claims more verifiable. Additionally, as part of a greater project, we plan to study the engagement that user will have with these new references.

This will impact positively in Wikipedia in two ways. In the short term, articles will be improved by referencing more relevant literature. In the long run, the research study that this task forms a part of will allow to better understand how Wikipedia impacts in the behavior of researchers.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Two research assistants from undergrad programs will be hired. These assistants will be asked to search for a pool of relevant and missing references linking to scholarly research articles (we will follow a strict protocol indicating how this references should searched). This is a far from simple task, as it is very time consuming.

Having found this pool of references, the assistants will gather and check all of the information required to cite the articles to be found. Then, they will be asked to edit hundred of Wikipedia pages and to add these missing references (once again, we will follow a strict protocol indicating how to add references to Wikipedia pages).

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Two research assistants will be hired for a four month period. We already have access to physical space where they will work. They will be required to work four hours a day. During the first two months they will have to search for references that could be added to Wikipedia. During the second two months, they will add references to English Wikipedia existing pages.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Not applicable

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

Yes. We have already contacted the two research assistants, and they have shown interest in the task. However, we are currently searching for funds in order to be able to hire them for the four months required.

6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Not applicable

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Education, Public Policy, Open Technology

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Not applicable

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

The research assistants we plan to hire for this re undergrad students. Being able to join the project will allow them to better fund their studies.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

Research assistants will be granted workspace in a well-established neuroscience/artificial intelligence University lab in Buenos Aires. Undergrad, doctoral and postdoctoral students currently work in the lab. The environment is quite stimulant, open minded and supportive.

11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.

I have written several emails to the Wikipedia's grants administrators. I also have discussed this proposal with former recipients of Wikimedia's grants.

12. Are you aware of other Rapid Fund proposals in your local group, community, or region that are being submitted and that align with your proposed project?

No

If yes:

12.1 Did you explore the possibility of doing a joint proposal with other leaders in your group?
N/A
12.2 How will this joint proposal allow you to have better results?
N/A

If no:

12.1 What was the reason for you deciding NOT to develop a joint proposal? How will you guarantee coordination efforts to make sure that you are not duplicating efforts and that you can maximise your work and joint impact.
I have not seen other group wanting to do the task that we are aiming to do.
13. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedia partners to implement this proposal? Required.

No

13.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.

14. In what ways do you think your proposal most contributes to the Movement Strategy 2030 recommendations. Select a maximum of THREE options that most apply.

Improve User Experience, Identify Topics for Impact, Innovate in Free Knowledge

Learning, Sharing, and Evaluation edit

15. What do you hope to learn from your work in this fund proposal?

As we mentioned before. The task we will carry out will have one short term outcome and one long term outcome. The short term outcome, which is the one we are requesting funds for, will be improving Wikipedia's content of hundred of English pages. For sure those involved in the task, will learn a lot about the way Wikipedia works. The long term outcome, understanding how researcher interact with Wikipedia's references to scholarly articles, will allow to quantify the importance of Wikipedia as a public good.

16. Based on these learning questions, what is the information or data you need to collect to answer these questions? Please register this information (as metric description) in the following spaces provided.
