Change Sought: The "Female Voices Online: Wiki Loves Women Jigawa Project" aims to address the significant underrepresentation of women from Jigawa State on Wikipedia, particularly on the Hausa Wikipedia platform. By increasing the visibility of notable women from this region, the project seeks to empower local women, celebrate their achievements, and contribute to a more balanced and inclusive online repository of knowledge.

Challenges: 1. Gender Gap: There is a notable gender gap in Wikipedia contributions, with fewer female editors and articles about women, especially from Northern Nigeria. 2. Lack of Representation: Many notable women from Jigawa State are not represented on Wikipedia, leading to an incomplete and biased historical record. 3. Limited Awareness and Skills: Women in Jigawa State may have limited awareness of how to contribute to Wikipedia and may lack the necessary skills to create and edit articles effectively.

'Main Approaches

1. Building Capacity and Awareness: Strategy: Educate and train women, particularly academics, on how to edit and contribute to Wikipedia. Activities: Organize workshops and training sessions focusing on Wikipedia editing, content creation, and the importance of documenting local women's achievements.

2. Creating and Improving Content: Strategy: Increase the number of Wikipedia articles about notable women from Jigawa State. Activities: Facilitate edit-a-thons and collaborative writing sessions where participants can work together to create and improve articles. This will include sourcing reliable references and ensuring the articles meet Wikipedia's standards.

3. Fostering a Supportive Community: Strategy: Establish a network of female editors who can support each other in their Wikipedia contributions. Activities: Create online forums or social media groups where participants can share tips, ask questions, and collaborate on projects. Regular meet-ups can also help maintain engagement and support.

Why These Approaches?

1. Proven Effectiveness: Training and capacity-building initiatives have been shown to increase the number and quality of contributions on Wikipedia. Engaging local academics leverages their existing research and writing skills. 2. Community Building: A supportive community is crucial for sustaining engagement. By creating a network of female editors, the project ensures that participants feel encouraged and supported in their efforts. 3. Focus on Local Content: Concentrating on notable women from Jigawa State ensures that the content is relevant and significant to the local community, making the project more impactful.

'Wider Impact'

Implementing this proposal will have several positive effects:

  • Increased Representation: More articles about women from Jigawa State will provide a more balanced and inclusive representation on Wikipedia.
  • Empowerment: Training women to contribute to Wikipedia empowers them with new skills and confidence, enabling them to share their knowledge and stories.
  • Cultural Preservation: Documenting the achievements of local women helps preserve the cultural heritage and history of Jigawa State for future generations.

This project is not only about adding content to Wikipedia but also about challenging the existing gender biases and fostering a more inclusive and diverse community of knowledge sharers.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Planned Activities

We will conduct an awareness campaign to highlight the importance of documenting women's achievements on Wikipedia. This will involve distributing flyers and utilizing social media to reach a broad audience.

We will organize workshops and training sessions for female participants, teaching them how to edit and create content on Wikipedia. These sessions will range from basic to advanced, ensuring participants gain the necessary skills and confidence.

We will host edit-a-thons where participants collaborate to create and improve Wikipedia articles about notable women from Jigawa State. These events will foster a supportive community and provide hands-on experience.

Content creation and improvement will be a primary focus, with participants identifying notable women, gathering reliable sources, and creating high-quality articles. Regular reviews and feedback will ensure content standards are met.

We will establish partnerships with local educational institutions and women's organizations to support the project, enhance its reach, and provide additional resources and support for participants.

Project Page

A dedicated project page on Wikimedia platforms will provide updates, resources, and documentation of activities, serving as a central hub for participants and interested parties.

11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

I first got the idea for this project while discussing with my friends, who were eager to learn how to edit Wikipedia and wanted to see the biographies of notable women from Jigawa State online, just like other notable women in Nigeria. This initial conversation sparked the concept of the "Female Voices Online: Wiki Loves Women Jigawa Project."

Following this, I discussed the idea with facilitators and experienced Wikimedians from Northern Nigeria to get their insights and suggestions. Their feedback was invaluable in shaping the proposal and ensuring it would be effective and impactful.

To involve the broader community, I posted about the project in the Hadejia Wikimedia Community WhatsApp group. This allowed for direct engagement with local community members, many of whom expressed interest and offered their support. Additionally, I posted the proposal on the Hausa Wikipedia Discussion Page to gather input from the wider Wikimedia community. This step ensured transparency and allowed for broader feedback and collaboration.

These discussions and posts helped align the project activities with the needs and interests of the community, and ensured that the project would complement other ongoing initiatives in the region. Here are the links to the on-wiki discussions about the proposal:

Learning and metrics

edit
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

Through the the project, I aim to understand how well our outreach strategies work in attracting and retaining women from across Jigawa State. I want to learn what helps keep them engaged and what might be preventing their ongoing participation. By evaluating the effectiveness of our training sessions, I hope to see how much they improve participants' skills in editing and creating Wikipedia content and to identify any additional support they may need.

I also want to measure the impact of the project on increasing the number and quality of articles about notable women from Jigawa State and identify common challenges participants face in this process. Understanding how successful we are in building a supportive community of female editors and what methods keep them engaged after the project ends is another key goal.

Additionally, I aim to assess the benefits of partnering with local educational institutions and women's organizations, identifying best practices for future collaborations. These insights will guide data collection and help refine our strategies, contributing to broader knowledge on engaging and empowering female editors in Wikimedia projects.
