1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Nigeria is one of the countries with the largest population of young people majority of who are girls. While a little over one in three of Nigeria’s whole population lives below the poverty line, among the female population this proportion surges to around 75 per cent. Poverty and pre-existing gender norms have continued to escalate gender based violence in Nigeria which affects girls education. The popular believe in Nigeria is that a girl's place is in the kitchen and this negative notion makes the people to believe that the girl child is meant only for marriage. For this reason, a girl born in Nigeria, if she survives her foundational years, has a 40% chance of getting married by the age of 15 and is likely to become a mother before she reaches age 17.Thus, the situation of the girl child in Nigeria particular with regard to education is one of the worst globally. Though, government and development partners have long recognized the effect of girls illiteracy and are working hard to address the issue, the problem still persist as a result of economic hardship, non implementation of policies and and pre existing gender norms. As we gear up towards the international day of the girl child 2022, we would like to draw the attention of the international community to the situation of the girl child in Nigeria and also leverage the event to build the capacity of the girls in Rural community of Nsukka to help them to build their confidence and self esteem and emphasis the importance of girl child education.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Our major objective for this event is to bring to lime light the need for the education of the the girl child in Nigeria by creating new articles and contributing to existing ones on this subject. To this effect we plan to

1. To recruit new editors with a major focus on teachers from secondary schools around Nsukka who will join us in promoting the education of the girl child.

2 Create new articles on the education of the girl child in Nigeria.

3. Improve content on English Wikipedia
4. Create awareness about Wikipedia in two all girls schools in Nsukka.

To this effect, a formal letter will be sent to 10 schools to send two teachers from each school to participate in a two day training and one day edit--thon that will focus on the education of the girl child. Out of these ten schools, 2 all girls schools will be selected for awareness campaign for students and staff about Wikipedia. After which a Wiki Fan Club will be set up in the two schools which will work closely with our organization for the promotion of free/ knowledge equity in the community.

It is our believe that being intentional about the girl child education particularly during an international event like this will help to bring to the fore the importance of girl child education and draw attention the attention of the global community to the situation of the girl child and the need to take actions for the education of the girl child.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

The activities will involve training of both new and old editors, edit- a thon, and awareness campaign about Wikipedia in two all girls secondary schools in Nsukka.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Art+Feminism

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

Yes, we have experienced Wikimedia to help in the training workshops and edit-a-thon activities. Ngozi User: Ngozi osadebe an Associate Prof. of Library and information Science and also a member of Equity Watch Initiative has been organizing Wikipedia event in University of Nigeria Nsukka since 2017 and has volunteered to help alongside Ezinne Njoku User: Ezinne Njoku and Beatrice Ewa User: Beatrice Ewa . The two have also been involved in Organizing Wikipedia events in UNN which is where our organization is located. I also have an experience having organized Wikipedia event in the past. My experience as a researcher, a reviewer and a program implementer will play a huge role User: Chiemezie Atama .

6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Content Gender gap, Geography

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

Education of the girl child in Nigeria is not much covered in Wikipedia. It is therefore important to raise awareness about how we can use Wikipedia to promote the education of the girl child in Nigeria. It has also been established that because not many people from this side of the world are contributing content to Wikipedia, relevant issues in the country like the education of the girl child has not been adequately covered on Wikipedia implying a geographical gap.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Education, Human Rights

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Gender Identity, Geographic , Age

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

The target population for the training and edit-a-thon event are majorly secondary school teachers in Nsukka. Some academic and post graduate students who have indicated interest to join the movement following our previous events will also be included. We already have E-WIN Wikipedia WhatsApp platform where we have been interfacing with those that participated in our last event. New members would be added to the group platform and we will leverage on this platform to continue to engage participants after the event. Through the E-WIN Wikipedia WhatsApp platform, we will follow up on them to ensure they continue to interface with Wikipedia and receive notification for subsequent events. We shall use the platform to encourage participants about information sharing. Pictures and videos from the events will be shared through Commons, Wikipedia free repository of free use images, sounds and other media. The photos and videos will also be uploaded on our Facebook page, website, Instagram and WhatsApp groups. We found that Wikipedia is not known at all to teachers and students’ (majority of who are girls) in secondary school in Nsukka, thus this will serve as an avenue to introduce teacher and secondary school students to Wikipedia. Thus, the need to do so. Hence, our plan is to leverage this event to establish Wiki Fan Club in the two schools that we will carry out campaign and possibly leverage on that to expand Wiki Fan club to other schools in Nsukka.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

The training and edit-a-thon will be carried out at University of Nigeria, Nsukka which is a very conducive and safe environment for this kind of training to ensure the security of the participants. They will be provided with transportation fare, feeding and Wifi. To ensure that those from far and disadvantaged communities participate, there will be accommodation space for few participants.

The campaign will be carried out under the guide of teachers in the school.

11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.
