6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Our grant proposal seeks support for a significant endeavor undertaken by our Wikimedia User Group. Our primary objective is to document a previously overlooked aspect of Albanian culture in the commons: the contemporary art scene. This represents a fundamental shift as, for the first time, we aim to add information and knowledge related to contemporary art in Albania in EN and SQ Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. However, we face several challenges in this pursuit. The main problem lies in the scarcity of readily available materials and the elusive nature of formal and informal groups operating within the contemporary art scene in Albania. To overcome this, our approach involves working with an established art collective like DebatikCenter of Contemporary Art. With the support from this rapid grant, we aim to add for the first time (in our knowledge) materials about the contemporary art scene in Albania (starting in the late 1990s to present), not only in public but in Wikimedia platforms so that others can improve our work that will start with this project and continue adding more information after this first step. Last but not least the main change we are trying to bring is to foster preservation of the materials related to contemporary art in Albania (by publishing them in the commons) and promotion of the local scene on a global scale by hopefully having the articles we will create and edit in other languages.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

During the two month period of the project we will organise 6 workshops that are like edit-a-thons. The first two workshops will be for the selection of the materials that will be uploaded and preparation of a list of articles to be created or improved. The other 4 workshops will be editathons on which we will enrich the Commons, Wikipedia and Wikidata.

During all the activities we will have members of Debatik Center which will facilitate the process of selection and assist us on enriching articles on Wikipedia, the Commons and Wikidata. In addition, we will have experienced Wiki editors to teach newcomers how to properly add content respecting Wikipedia, Wikidata ans Wikimedia Commons guidelines.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

The team members that will be engaged in the project are chosen to have a diverse background that will contribute to a successful project. More specifically:

  • Sonia Budini: project manager, responsible for the operational part of the project including, grant application, grant report, documentation (Username: SoniaBudini)
  • Kristi Çunga: graphic designer that will work on promotional materials, online and offline. Will also handle the printing process. (Username: Kristi Çunga)
  • Redon Skikuli: mentor, long time Wikimedia contributor that will be helping newcomers and non-experienced users create accounts and do their first contributions respecting Wikimedia regulations. (Username: Leeturtle)
  • Vincent W.J. van Gerven Oei: mentor and long time contributor to open access related projects, will work on gathering the material and organize it so that it is easy for editors to add these materials in the commons
  • Irdi Ismaili: finance officer, will be handling all the receipts and budget report (Username: Irdiism)
9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

Target participants are the community of contemporary art practioners in Tirana, many of which have collaborated for the last two years on a series of exhibitions, lectures, and workshops in different formats and venues. The same team will participate in this wikisprint, which both extends the documentation work undertaken in various forms and also forms the archival basis for further activities during 2024 and 2025. It is important to emphasise that this is the first time that this target group has participated in works documenting contemporary art in Wikimedia projects like Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata.

10. Does your project involve work with children or youth? (required)

10.1. Please provide a link to your Youth Safety Policy. (required) If the proposal indicates direct contact with children or youth, you are required to outline compliance with international and local laws for working with children and youth, and provide a youth safety policy aligned with these laws. 11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

This project was first discussed within the regular meetings of the MANIFESTO project group (organised from DebatikCenter of Contemporary Arts), as a way to document the activities in the Albanian contemporary art scene in an open and sustainable way. This project was then collectively elaborated in subsequent meetings between our team and DebatikCenter team where all parties recognized that there is limited exposure of the Albanian Contemporary Art scene in Albania and that we needed to do something about it. After explaining the importance of projects like Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata the DebatikCenter team not only agreed to proceed with the formulation of the proposal, but also to sign a Memorandum of Understanding.

Learning and metrics edit

17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

During this project we hope to do the first step in collaborating with entities and teams that have quite a long experience in documenting contemporary art in Albania. Given that we have not done any previous activity focused in this area we are keen to learn more on the way we need to approach similar teams or institutions in the future after this project is concluded. In addition, we are happy to see that now there is a first step in Albania towards the documentation of Albanian Contemporary Art in the commons. This is the first time that the contemporary art community in Albania gets exposed to the notion of digital commons (or to be more accurate, to contribute in a structured way to the commons) and this will give us a lot to learn from to replicate the experience and improve such efforts in the near future.
