Bridging the Gap: Introducing Wikipedia and Wikimedia Projects to Tunisian Students
Despite its global importance, Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects remain largely unfamiliar to many students and young people in Tunisia. This project seeks to address this knowledge gap by introducing Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects to a new generation of learners, fostering their understanding of free knowledge and empowering them to contribute meaningfully to these platforms.
The primary objectives of this initiative are:
Awareness and Training: Introduce students to the Wikimedia ecosystem, with a special focus on Wikipedia, and teach them the skills required to edit and contribute effectively. Accessibility and Inclusion: Provide access to a fully equipped space with computers and a stable internet connection, ensuring inclusivity for students who lack these resources. Skill Development: Promote digital literacy, research skills, and collaborative editing, empowering students to share their knowledge and amplify their voices on a global platform. To achieve these goals, the project will establish a dedicated hub open 60 hours per month. This space will serve as a learning and collaboration center, equipped with:
Computers: Offering hands-on experience with Wikimedia tools. High-Speed Internet: Facilitating seamless engagement with online resources. Expert Guidance: Training sessions led by experienced Wikimedia volunteers and educators. Through this project, students will not only gain practical skills in research, writing, and editing but also become contributors to the global pool of free knowledge. Project Plan: After-School Wikipedia Program
Step 1: Opening the Call for Participation We will begin by opening a call for applications, inviting students to participate in the after-school Wikipedia project. This will target motivated students who are eager to learn about Wikimedia projects and contribute to the free knowledge ecosystem.
Step 2: Selecting Participants and Forming Groups A total of 48 participants will be selected from the pool of applicants based on their enthusiasm and potential. These participants will be divided into six groups, each consisting of eight members, to ensure focused and personalized learning experiences.
Step 3: Setting Up a Learning Space We will rent a suitable venue equipped with computers and internet access, providing an optimal learning environment. The space will be available for 60 hours per month and will be used to conduct workshops and collaborative work sessions.
Step 4: Conducting Workshops Each group will participate in a series of five hands-on workshops, designed to progressively build their skills in using and contributing to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects:
