Over 250 ethnic groups make up the diverse nation of Nigeria, each with its own distinct language, culture, and history. The country is home to many indigenous languages, many of which face extinction. WikiNaijaNames is an initiative that will help promote linguistic diversity and support the survival of indigenous languages. For many Nigerians, their native names are a crucial part of who they are. They give people chances to learn about various cultures and languages and by promoting them on Wikimedia Projects, we are ensuring that Nigerian cultures and identities are accurately represented in online spaces and providing access to this information for people all over the world. The goal of the project is to provide content about Nigerian names for Wikipedia and Wikidata in order to commemorate and preserve the nation's rich cultural legacy.

According to an on Wiki Signal carried out, currently, there is a significant lack of representation, with only:

23 Nigerian names documented on Wikipedia (https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=24907727) 134 Surnames of Nigerian origin, mostly Yoruba (https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=24907781) 19 Igbo Language Surnames (https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=24907839) 2 Hausa Language Surnames (https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=24907850) 1 Hausa given name (https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=28911696) 0 Igala Language Surnames or given names 87 Yoruba given names (https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=28911688) 12 Igbo given names (https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=28911690)

with few pronunciation and transcription and inadequate data on Wikidata.

This project seeks to address this gap by creating and sharing knowledge about Nigerian names, their meanings, pronunciation, and cultural significance. By doing so, we can dispel inaccurate stereotypes and promote a more nuanced pronunciation and understanding of Nigerian names and their cultural significance culture.

This initiative is part of a larger effort to ensure equity and inclusivity in the digital world, empowering Nigerian communities to lead efforts in correcting the mispronunciation of their indigenous names, and helping readers better understand the etiquette and by so doing lead efforts in correcting the mispronunciation of their indigenous names, helping readers and experiences. By celebrating Nigeria's indigenous identity on Wikimedia, we can bridge cultural divides, foster harmony, and ensure that future generations have access to accurate information about Nigerian names and cultures.

The project's goals include: Creating and sharing content about Nigerian names on Wikipedia and Wikidata Promoting linguistic diversity and supporting the survival of indigenous languages Accurately representing Nigerian cultures and identities online

By achieving these goals, WikiNaijaNames can make a significant impact on preserving Nigeria's cultural heritage and promoting diversity and inclusivity online.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Training and Recruitment: We will recruit 70 participants from the Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, and Igala Wikimedia communities in Nigeria, comprising 20 new editors and 50 existing editors. The training will enable them to create and edit Wikipedia articles and Wikidata items, as well as record and upload pronunciation audios of Nigerian names on Wikimedia Commons.

Both new and existing editors will be provided with the necessary tools and information to effectively contribute to Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons.

Guide participants through creating Wikipedia and Wikidata accounts.

Educate participants on core content policies and general editing principles.

Train participants to create new items and improve existing ones on Wikidata. Instruct on creating and enhancing articles on Wikipedia.

Teach participants how to record pronunciations of Nigerian names and upload these audios to Wikimedia Commons.

The outreach dashboard will be utilized to track all contributions made by editors during the edit-a-thon.

Weekly reimbursements will be given to the top contributors.

Prizes will be awarded to the top four contributors at the end of the campaign to motivate participation.

Mobilization and Sensitization: The project will engage academics and students who are linguistics and language enthusiasts passionate about Nigerian languages, culture, and heritage. It is expected that trained participants will further create awareness and promote Nigerian native names on various Wikimedia projects. Activities:

Edit-a-thons: We will conduct edit-a-thons to train 70 participants in performing both minor edits (adding citations, Wikilinks, categories, infoboxes, and descriptions) and major edits on Wikipedia articles related to Nigerian indigenous names.

Data-a-thons: A series of Wikidata training/data-a-thons will be held to raise awareness about the available data on Nigerian indigenous names, identify data gaps, and instruct participants on using the Wikidata query service to track items. Participants will be trained to run queries, understand existing data gaps, and create or improve identified items on Wikidata.

Recording Audios: Participants will receive training on how to record and upload pronunciation audios of Nigerian names to Wikimedia Commons.

Outcomes: Generate diverse content on Nigerian indigenous names. Enhance the representation and documentation of Nigerian linguistic heritage on Wikimedia platforms.
