Campaign and Outreach on Pronunciation of Nigerian Indigenous names on Wikipedia

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Local

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

African names are not always correctly pronounced by non-natives of the community. I have also observed that some Nigerian Wikipedia articles do not have audio pronunciations of names which should serve as a guide to reader on how to pronounce Nigerian names. Adding audio pronunciation to Nigerian articles will enable reader to pronounce it rightly, thereby preventing mispronunciation of Nigerian names.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

One of the strategies to achieve this is to use natives of the community who will pronounce these names correctly. secondly, there will be training on how to edit Wikipedia which will be mainly on adding audio files. The participant will also be shown how to upload audio to commons and how to add audio files uploaded on commons to Wikipedia articles. Another strategy is to use tools that will enable the participant edit these projects easily. The participants will be taught how to use the mobile spell4wiki app and the ligua libre for recording audio names. These strategies will be effective because these tools are user friendly.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

1. There will be campaign to get interested participants

2. There will be resources that will serve as guide to the participant, these resources will come in form of presentation slides, videos, etc
3. In-person and online trainings to guide participants on what to do
4. Follow-ups through messaging and communication channels

6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Geography, Language, Cultural background, ethnicity, religion, racial

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

The participants will be introduced to Wikimedia Foundation projects, especially Wikipedia and Wikicommons. The first thing that differentiates articles on Wikipedia is the page title. Biographies have subject's names as page title, these names serve as identities and it is necessary that these names are pronounced correctly or rightly. This work will address the issue of readers knowing the actual pronunciation of article names, especially biographies.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Education, Culture, heritage or GLAM , Advocacy, Diversity

Gender Identity, Ethnic/racial/religious or cultural background, Linguistic / Language

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

The target participants will be tertiary students, include language and linguistic students. Before the event, google form will be used to retrieve responses of participant and to know the number of participant expected for the project, participant will be engaged with registration on Meta-Wiki and event dashboard.

12. Are you aware of other Rapid Fund proposals in your local group, community, or region that are being submitted and that align with your proposed project?

No

If yes:

N/A
12.2 How will this joint proposal allow you to have better results?
N/A

If no:

12.1 What was the reason for you deciding NOT to develop a joint proposal? How will you guarantee coordination efforts to make sure that you are not duplicating efforts and that you can maximise your work and joint impact.
In most trainings I organized in the university community, more students were eager to participate and join during the training but these interested students were turned down due to limited resources that may not give room for more participants. To avoid duplication of effort, I will keep my community informed and interested volunteers an also join the project to give room for more hands and impact.
