- Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)
Local
- Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.
- R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.
- 1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.
I am a Nigerian journalist with more than twenty years of experience in journalism. I published the "Women of Substance", a compilation of interviews with Nigerian women. One of the challenges I countered in the course of my work was the act of pronouncing names. Unfortunately, Wikipedia, the world's largest encyclopedia, which serves as my reference point, has not helped either because most of its published profiles do not have a mechanism for validating the proper pronunciation of names posted on it. Hence, my project intends to produce voice tags representing the recorded voice of women's pronouncing their names as published on the Wikipedia page. The result will be added as part of the info box on each affected article. The project intends to "Improve the User experience" on Wikipedia as one of the recommendation the Wikimedia Movement strategies. (1).

- 2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
I plan to adopt the following approach
- 1. Networking: As a journalist focusing on women's visibility. I have interviewed 100+ women ( Published and unpublished). For this project, I plan to encourage women on my network with Wikipedia pages to release the audio pronunciation of their names for the project.
- 2. Collaboration: I am not a Wikimedia, but I plan to work with experienced members of the Wikimedia community in Nigeria who will serve as interface between the community and me and my team. The collaboration will involve organizing a series of edit-a-tons on the usage of the audio contents: training and seminars.
- 3. The audio record will include; in-person and virtual sessions. We will adopt a virtual session for women familiar with me, while we will use in-person for women unfamiliar with me because they will need to see us before they can release their voices for this purpose.
- 4. Incentive: The project will employ a project coordinator and Wikimedia In-residence and other free roles
- 5. Motivation: The project will produce gift items that will be used to motivate wikimedians to use the contents on relevant wikipedia pages
- 3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
To achieve the main objective of the project, I will deploy the following activities;
- 1.Gather a comprehensive list of Nigerian women with articles on Wikipedia. The list will comprise the mix of names I interviewed earlier and those that are yet to be interviewed.
- 2.Prepare a letter of consent to the selected names; the letter will address the project's purpose, permission for voice recording and schedule time for the task.
- 3. Organise a series of edit-a-thons in collaboration with Wikimedia affiliates in Nigeria on the usage of the content and training of interested Nigerian women on how to contribute to Wikipedia and its sister project.
- 4. conduct a survey to collate feedback from participant on the problems the project intend to solve and the overall execution of the project.
- 4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.
Not applicable
- 5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

- 6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.
Currently, over 90% of all profiles about Nigerian women with Wikipedia articles do not have a mechanism that can help readers understand the proper pronunciation of names. Completing this project will help bridge the gap in the correct pronunciation of names of people with Wikipedia articles and hence improve the user experience on Wikipedia.
- 7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.
Education, Culture, heritage or GLAM , Diversity
- 8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?
Ethnic/racial/religious or cultural background, Linguistic / Language
- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?
As earlier said, my work as a professional media personality who has worked extensively in promoting Nigerian women within and diaspora has helped to build a good relationship with notable women in Nigeria. So, I will tap into the wealth of my network for the list and work with the Wikimedia community in Nigeria with the list of Nigerian women with Wikipedia pages. We will create a communication channel on Whatsapp or telegram, depending on the choice of my audience.
Suppose the proper pronunciation of a celebrity's name is available. In that case, a not-so-well-known individual who bears the same name and is from the same ethnic group already has the opportunity to pronounce their name correctly. Appellations are cut across all groups and ages so that the project will serve the high class and all groups.
I understand that some of the audience is interested in learning about Wikipedia, so we plan to organise a series of Wikipedia training to catch their appetite and curiosity about the project.
We will maintain our communication even after the projects.
- 10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?
The plan is to introduce Wikimedia Friendly space policy to all participants in our consent letter which will be shared with them before the project. This move or action will help pass the message about the Wikimedia project's behavioral values.
- 11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.
I initially wrote the audio pronunciation proposal in an email to the Wikiteam in Alliance funds. I then got a response from Tanveer Hasan who disclosed in her response that after going through my proposal I should apply to the Rapid funds under the Wikipedia Community funds. She also disclosed that she had copied Davit Saroyan. Soon after Davit got in touch and sent me the link to continue to the process of the application.
I have also informed some of the executives of the Wikimedia User Nigeria about this project and they have shown interest in supporting it.

edit- 15. What do you hope to learn from your work in this fund proposal?
1) Why do names have the exact spelling but have several meanings depending on pronunciation? 2) Can a name not correctly pronounced be seen as being offensive? 3) is it true that tribe or ethnicity also determine the pronunciation of a name? 4) Are there names that are only peculiar to certain places? 5) Why do compound names seem to originate from two vastly different ethnic groups, and does this affect the pronunciation?
