Change: The goal of advancing Hausa Language and Culture with Wikipedia in Zaria is increasing the quantity and quality of Hausa language content on Wikipedia, as well as promoting the understanding and appreciation of Hausa culture.

Challenges: Some of the challenges are:

  • Content Gap: Hausa language content on Wikipedia may be relatively limited, with fewer articles, stubs, or incomplete information compared to other languages.
  • Participation: Encouraging contributors, especially native Hausa speakers, to actively engage in creating and expanding Wikipedia articles in Hausa can be a challenge. This may be due to various reasons, including lack of awareness, limited digital literacy, or cultural barriers.
  • Reliable Sources: Ensuring that the Hausa Wikipedia content meets Wikipedia's reliable sourcing standards can be a challenge. Finding and citing credible sources in Hausa language may require additional effort.

Approaches:

  • Community Engagement: Engage with the Hausa-speaking community in Zaria to raise awareness about the importance of contributing to Wikipedia. Organize workshops, edit-a-thons nto encourage participation and provide training on editing Wikipedia articles.
  • Content Creation: Facilitate the creation of new Hausa-language articles and the expansion of existing ones. Identify key topics related to Hausa culture, history, literature, or notable personalities that are missing or underrepresented on Wikipedia and encourage contributors to focus on those areas.
  • Collaboration and Partnerships: Collaborate with local organizations, educational institutions, and cultural institutions in Zaria to form partnerships. This can include providing technical and content support, organizing joint workshop, or incorporating Wikipedia editing into relevant educational or cultural programs.
  • Capacity Building: Offer training and resources to support contributors in improving their digital literacy skills, sourcing and referencing information, and adhering to Wikipedia's guidelines and policies.

I, Muhammad Ahmad (Bhaffa: Wikimedia Username) have a strong background that aligns well with the requirements mentioned in the grant application. My experience as a Language Propagation Officer at the Centre for Digitization of Indigenous African Languages (CDIAL) demonstrates my expertise and commitment to language translation and propagation.

My experience of more than 3 years in interpretation and translations further highlights my proficiency in bridging the gap between English and Hausa languages. This experience showcases my ability to accurately and effectively convey meaning and context between the two languages, which is essential for translating Wikimedia/Wikipedia articles.

Additionally, my involvement in editing Wikimedia/Wikipedia articles from English to Hausa Language demonstrate my understanding of the platform and my commitment to improving content in the Hausa language.

Moreover, my training experience through CDIAL by organizing and conducting more than 5 training sessions for local communities demonstrates my ability to effectively share my knowledge and skills with others. These training sessions, specifically related to our dictionary product, highlight my organizing experience and my dedication to empowering and educating others in language propagation.
