- 1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.
Oryx beisa beisa was assessed by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2018. Currently, listed as Endangered under criteria A2bd. Their numbers have declined by an estimated 52% (49-55%) from 34,000 individuals in the mid-1990s to around 16,000-18,000 over the past 18 years (three generations), currently estimated at less than 8000-9000 mature individuals with a continuing decline of greater than 50% percent over the next one generation (estimated at 10 years, IUCN Red List 2022). Though, there is not much is known about the Beisa Oryx species composition, population sizes and densities globally and locally. Little is known about the range and movements of this species, and, to date, it has not benefited from dedicated conservation action. The IUCN analyzes of the conservation actions taken for Beisa Oryx; points Nakuprat-Gotu Community Conservancy has the only systematic in situ conservation of Beisa Oryx that is currently available (IUCN Red List, 2022). Coupled with information scarcity, the policy implications to conservation of the species regionally and nationally are extremely weak. The Kenya wildlife conservation strategy 2030 and endangered species strategy ratified in 2020, are intended to change the substantive requirement of recovery in any way, however some the country strategy is yet to update the national red list and establish specific species management plan (2030 National Wildlife Strategy, 2018). NGCC-Beisa Oryx Protection Program seeks USD 5000 to conduct a study to review the status of the species to inform a new recovery action plan strategy. The proposed study is geared towards enhancing the conservation action in NGCC by indigenous communities in northern Kenya that is providing hope for the future of the endangered Beisa oryx in the region, this aims to combat the population declines through a comprehensive planning to enhance elimination of poaching.
- 2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
The proposed study objective is to collect, describe, analyze, document, systemize, standardize, and increasing scientific and local knowledge about Beisa Oryx species regionally and globally. The long-term goal of the proposed study is to inform the recovery and conservation methods of the endangered species in NGCC and in effectively managing habitat to grow its Beisa Oryx by 15% annually within the next 10 years, further securing Kenya’s metapopulation.The inquiry of the study aims at documenting, systemizing, standardizing, and increasing scientific and local knowledge about Beisa Oryx species, To develop effective conservation measures of Beisa Oryx species, it is necessary to gather detailed information about population status and seasonal distribution of the species. Accordingly, gather detailed information on current population size, habitat preference, seasonal distribution patterns and demographic composition of the species across the habitat types and seasons and habitat use of Beisa oryx (Oryx beisa beisa) population in NGCC and neighboring landscapes to inform the development of a strategic plan. The available data and information drawn within the new Recovery and action plan framework for Beisa Oryx will result to an efficient, viable and potential recovery program, that will optimize the Beisa oryx recovery population to a 50% growth in 5 years.

1. Evaluate and describe Beisa Oryx species’ current situation, including any relevant scientific data. Through a systemic research field work will be conducted to avail hard data that the proposed data collection tools will align to the scientific data collection of threatened species, the research questions will be customized within the guidelines Adopted from Murphy and Weiland 2013.
