Part 1 Understanding your work

edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

1. Formation of the Sakizaya Wikipedia Writing Team: We will gather Sakizaya people who are computer literate and proficient in both Chinese and the Sakizaya language. We will explain the project's objectives and tasks and conduct meetings, Wikipedia article creation, and planning and execution of elder interviews during the project period.

2. Organization and Execution of 6 Wikipedia Writing Workshops: We will schedule monthly Wikipedia writing workshops and coordinate with team members to hold these workshops at specified offline locations on a monthly basis.

3. Regular Addition of Wikipedia Articles: We will continuously add Wikipedia articles based on the activities of our offline workshops. In case any team members encounter difficulties with online operations, there will be partners available to assist, ensuring a steady output of Wikipedia articles.

4. Addition of Sakizaya Interview Videos: We will invite Sakizaya elders to participate in interviews to document the Sakizaya language and culture. After the interviews are conducted, the videos will be edited, translated into the Sakizaya language, and have Sakizaya subtitles added. The videos will then be uploaded to Wikipedia for permanent digital preservation.

5. Addition of Sakizaya Vocabulary Audio Files: In order to facilitate effective learning through the Lingua Libre website, we will record Sakizaya vocabulary words and upload them to preserve the meanings and pronunciations of these words.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Based on our execution experience, we believe the following methods are effective in practical implementation:

1. Offline physical gatherings/workshops: Given that the Sakizaya language is primarily preserved in the wisdom of the elders or older tribe members, many of whom may not be adept in operating technologies like Wikipedia, physical gatherings are crucial for hands-on teaching. Regular meetings and workshops not only foster stronger bonds among team members but also facilitate efficient uploading of Wikipedia entries.

2. Conducting in-person interviews with Sakizaya elders and creating video uploads: Interviewing the elders is urgent and cannot be delayed. The sooner we converse with the elders about Sakizaya culture and language, the better we can document these endangered languages. In-person meetings and interviews not only allow the elders to participate in preserving their language but also effectively document Sakizaya language and culture on Wikipedia, where it can be preserved indefinitely.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Strongly agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Strongly agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

Providing meals during the workshops can serve as an incentive to encourage more active participation from community members. We believe that in order to gather the voices and energy of the minority group effectively, having such incentives is necessary.

Part 2: Your main learning

edit

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

1. Improved efficiency in adding Wikipedia entries and projects: Due to regular workshops, we have gained a better understanding of Wikipedia’s online operations and use. In this process, we have added more Sakizaya entries to Wikipedia.

2. Deeper understanding of the Sakizaya and their culture: This project has not only deepened our emotional connection with the tribe members but also enhanced our understanding of our own Sakizaya culture and language. After all, much of our ancestors' wisdom and knowledge reside with these elders. It is through interviews and interactions that we slowly unearth and preserve our Sakizaya culture and language.

3. Learned to use Lingua Libre and Spell4Wiki for recording Sakizaya audio: This was our first time using these tools, and we initially encountered several issues, especially with audio-visual file conversion. We searched countless online resources for solutions and eventually succeeded in uploading words and videos to Wikipedia. It was a challenging but rewarding learning experience.

4. Established a closer rapport with the elders: During the project, we interviewed and filmed 6 videos about Sakizaya elders and held monthly workshops. These activities taught us how to interact and communicate with the elders and tribe members.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

During our first attempt at uploading words and audio-visual content to Wikipedia, we encountered two major challenges. The first was translating the Sakizaya language and adding subtitles to the videos. The second challenge involved converting the audio-visual content into WebM files, which proved to be a significant hurdle during our project. We spent a considerable amount of time consulting with native Sakizaya language speakers and searching online for solutions to the file conversion issue. Only after much effort were we able to finalize the videos and convert them into a format suitable for uploading to Wikipedia.

Additionally, we observed that viewers tend to have more patience for shorter videos, as longer ones tend to lose their interest. Therefore, the lesson we learned is that for future uploads of audio-visual content to Wikipedia, each file should be kept under five minutes. This approach not only facilitates easier uploading but also speeds up the file conversion process.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Since we have already learned to use Lingua Libre in this project, we will prioritize the addition of Sakizaya words and Sakizaya audio-visual materials in our future goals. Our aim is to store more Sakizaya words in Wikipedia, allowing younger generations of the Sakizaya and people around the world to utilize these Wikipedia resources to learn Sakizaya vocabulary and pronunciation.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

12. Did you have any difficulties collecting data to measure your results? This could include things like a lack of time or resources, or the expertise in your team to collect this data. It could also include difficulties with particular data collection tools.

Yes

12a. State what difficulties you had.

Since this was our first time applying for a project, we were initially unsure how to properly set and plan the measurement standards in the project proposal. As a result, the metrics table had issues with redundancy.

12b. How do you hope to overcome these challenges in the future? Do you have any recommendations for the Foundation to support you in addressing these challenges?

We will learn from our previous experiences and use them as references to guide the direction of our project content in future applications. This approach will help ensure that the outcomes of future projects align with the information provided in our initial applications.

13. Use this space to upload any documents and provide links to any tools you have used that would be useful to understand your data collection (e.g., surveys you have carried out, communications material, training material, program and event dashboard link, project page on Meta).
