Proposal edit

1. What is the overall vision of your organization and how does this proposal contribute to this? How does this proposal connect to past work and learning?

This is a general event that will cover all the major Hausa communities, thereby creating awareness on Wikiquote and organizing trainings and workshops as well as contests to encourage participation. This project (after it's approval) will also center on leadership (roles and responsibilities) like admins, patrollers on Hausa Wikiquote and related sister projects. Project will relate to past work and learning through the following programs

  • We have previously organise awarenesses, trainings and workshops through rapid grants. This time around we'll also organise such events with longer plans and much wider targets and audience.
  • We have previously registered with a library "Arewa House Library" Kaduna, which contains alot of interrestings Hausa novels and books. We will therefor use it for sourcing out quotes.

(https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Requests_for_new_languages/Wikiquote_Hausa), we (https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wq/ha/Babban_shafi) and thus creating

List of some important quotes created on Incubator

2. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important?

Challenges

  • Most Nigerian/African editors benefits only from a short term rapid grants and as such there is a massive application in such area every month. We therefore want to change that as others can drive from our idea and plan on a long term goals.
  • Most editors in Nigeria experience some or all difficulties especially data, power supply, good equipments that will enable them carry their activities efficiently.
  • Most of our editors (in Hausa Wikipedia) are teenagers and as such have little incomes, some are students, some even unemployed graduates etc. and as such data subscriptions and other related expenses like power and comfortable environment which will ease their work seem overwhelming. We seek to counter such difficulties by creating data and other equipment support to our subjects and perhaps rent a conducive apartment or register with an Internet Cafe that will cover our yearly activities.
  • From our experience in editing Hausa Wikipedia pages, most of the pages are incomplete (stubs), some where written by non-native Wikimedians and as such there are alot of errors. Therefore we want to create a better avenue on Wikiquote that will be patrolling and sorting out such articles/quotes and completing them or assigning them for completion and there by tagging good articles and improving/deleting bad ones.
  • Most Hausa Wikimedians including some experience editors lacks sufficient skills in editing Wikiquote. As such, trainings and workshops are essential around all 7 major Hausa cities including both new and experienced editors.
  • Most of the new editors recruited especially from remote areas lose interests, may be because they do not truly understand properly from just one training or workshop, some do not have access to resources and perhaps feel excluded due to distances and other barriers. This project will tend to train, re-train and include any interested volunteer in both Wikipedia activities and decision making; as we also believe that everyone has something to offer.
  • Editathons will be created within the time period to encourage participation
  • Awareness: We will create awareness across Hausa Communities: Katsina, Daura, Kano, Zaira, Kaduna, Abuja, Bauchi. Quotes (Hausa Wikiquote) will be promoted online and at radio stations.
  • This project is also aimed at creating leadership as well as assigning roles and responsibilities in handling Hausa Wikiquote activities.
  • We hope at the end of this event (year) Hausa Wikiquote will be a fully developed wiki with thousands of interesting quotes.

3. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

The above goals can be achieved through the following objectives:

1. There will be a 2 weeks awareness on Wikiquote both online and offline with specific emphasis on major Hausa Cities of Zaria, Daura, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa and Bauchi.
2. Trainings and workshops will be organized in this cities
4. There will be a general contest in which most dedicated contributors will be motivated to continue contributing and perhaps hold responsibilities for the success of Hausa Wikiquote
3. New participants will be added to our already existing groups on social media

4. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

The above objectives can be achieved with the following strategies

1. Creating awareness: will take place in 2 forms; online and offline
a) Online: video and audio files will be created with some of the important quotes which are inspirational to Hausa people and will be advertized in radio and television stations in Northern Nigeria
