Program 1: Education program, Reading Wikipedia in Classroom edit

Approach
  • Collaboration with universities and schools to increase awareness and engagement.
  • Outreach: Using the social media channels of the user group and of the partners to advertise these programs, their objectives, and intended outcomes.
  • Grants: Providing small grants to help implement these projects
  • Participants Recognition: Grant certifications and awards to motivate participation
Strategies
  • in-person training in the universities in Levantine countries conducted by the program supervisors - UG members.
  • Online sessions and meetings with different members of the UG to share experiences and exchange knowledge.
  • Have good documentation for the program, to clearly track the progress, and to benefit future similar programs.
  • In the case of content editing, the edited articles will be directly related to students'/teachers specialty, which improves the reliability of the content.
Challenges to address
  • The Knowledge Gap: Wikipedia readers need to know more about Wikipedia and the efforts volunteers do to provide reliable content. Encourage readers to take part in the editing efforts. This also includes changing * the traditional ideas people still have about Wikipedia, such as being unreliable and must not be used by students
  • Attract newcomers, train them, and engage them to participate in the voluntary work on the Wikimedia projects, and be the next generation of editors in Wikimedia projects
  • Adoption in Education: Overcome any resistance or skepticism in educational institutions in working with the education program
How our strategies will support addressing Challenges
  • Decreasing the GAP between students and Wikipedia by learning the essential approaches to edit it.
  • Having new UG members who will participate in the Wikimedia projects to maintain the sustainability of the group’s work.
  • Adopting Wikipedia in Educational institutions, by establishing partnerships with universities.

Program 2: Contests, Editathons, Training and Workshops edit

Approaches
  • Engagement with WMF campaigns
  • Interacting with the Arab Community interests
  • Increasing awareness about Wikipedia in both the Levantine community and the entire Arab Community
  • Highlighting and increasing awareness about the other Wikimedia projects such as Wikidata and Wiki Commons. This includes educating the newcomers about the basics about Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata.
  • Increasing the skills of the community members including content editing, basics of scientific research, professional photography, etc.
Strategies
  • Engaging local experts in edit-a-thons, trainings and workshops
  • Media outreach: Using social media channels for the user group to advertise about these programs and increase awareness about the campaigns
  • The focus will be on the highly important topics: Women, HumanRights, Environment, intangible cultural heritage, etc.
  • Increasing retention rate, reducing barriers to participation and Volunteer Data Support program.
Challenging to address
  • Reducing the GAP between the Arabic community and WMF campaigns
  • Having more Levantine people editing Wikipedia and its sister projects.
  • Quantity and quality of the edited content to Wikimedia projects

Our strategies will support addressing the challenges by
  • Increasing the quantity and quality of the content in Wikimedia projects specially Arabic Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata
  • Increasing awareness about Cultural Heritage, Women, HumanRights, Clinement Change and other important topics.
  • Maintaining sustainability: contests and edit-a-thons are essential events through which we can attract volunteers, teach them how to edit, and encourage them to join the WM Levant user group.
  • Conducting Contests, Edit-a-thons, Trainings and Workshops aimed for the community will improve and support relations between Wikimedia and the Communities.

Programs: Partnerships - GLAMs edit

Approaches
  • To establish new partnerships with Libraries, Educational institutes, organizations, etc., in order to benefit from the knowledge these entities have.
  • To reactivate and maintain the existing partnerships, by offering new projects and practical programs.
  • To reach out to a wider audience in the Levant community, with the help and collaboration of partners.
Strategies
  • Keep regular communication and collaboration with the partners
  • Capacity building and support to improve high-impact content about underrepresented content.
  • Carry out a diverse range of activities that fulfill the common goals.
Challenging
  • Connections with the important GLAM institutes in the Levant countries are still limited, although potentials are high.
  • Poor Academic collaboration
  • Reach out, discussions, and identify the interest is difficult.
  • Introducing our group as a non-official voluntary group is difficult.
Our strategies will support addressing the challenges by
  • Explaining the Vision of Wikimedia, and the objectives of the Wikimedia projects to GLAM institutes
  • Stressing the importance of such collaboration to share and open the existing and inaccessible knowledge
  • Convincing people about the importance of volunteering in a different domain than what they are used to: “Volunteer your knowledge”
  • Shedding light on the partnerships we did using social media channels to tell our stories, which in turn will help others understand what happens behind the scenes in Wikipedia specifically.
  • Helping GLAM institutes communicate their message and achieve their mission.
  • Engaging staff and employees of the GLAM institutes themselves to participate in sharing the knowledge they work on, to increase the Arabic content using the Wikimedia platforms.
