Our chapter's most successful projects are ones that have been worked on for a number of years before we can see tangible results and impact. A good examples of these are the copyright advocacy, Afrikaans Wikipedia growth and support projects, SADiLaR+Wikipedia+ PenSaLB (SWIP) African language outreach & training project with universities and our internship program. The projects I've highlighted are part of the present proposal, and we are now witnessing their outcomes. For instance, the (SWIP) African Language Outreach & Training Project in collaboration with universities is yielding results after years of effort to secure partnerships with both universities and our two partners, PenSalb and Sadilar. Another example involves the internship program, which seeks to enhance Wikimedia ZA's visibility in the media, generate employment opportunities for unemployed graduates, and attract new users. This initiative demonstrated its efficacy and influence when, after a year, all our interns secured permanent positions in other NGOs and government due to the internship experience. Furthermore, we observed that they persisted in editing Wikipedia beyond the program, thanks to the training we provided during the internship.We would like to repeat these successes with other African language Wikipedias, university and science outreach projects.

In December 2023 we were held a strategic retreat to identify areas that Wikimedia ZA needs to improve upon. It emerged that we need to focus on our Administration, Programs and Communications ( Internal and External). It was proposed that in order to improve we need to professionalize the chapter to resolves administration concerns and manage the coordination of decision makers.
We need to be accessible to our communities for them to easily connect with us.
We need to communicate better internally. This will help us know ourselves better, understand our projects and help us build learning pathways for newcomers and other contributors.
We need to communicate better externally. This will help build our public image, showcase our story through the media so South Africa will know who we are, what we do and WHY.
The following are programs that will help us address some of our challenges and support our strategy. Most of these programmes have been ongoing for a couple of years, It was proposed on the strategy that we need to plan them better.
- Chapter meetups - Since 2020 Wikimedia ZA hosts a community meetup (both in Johannesburg and Cape Town) on the last Saturday of every month to strengthen community health.
- African language outreach - WMZA will continue partnering with SADiLaR (South African Centre for Digital Language Resources within the South African government Department of Science and Innovation) and the The Pan South African Language Board (PenSALB) under the SWiP project to translate Wikipedia articles in African language Wikipedias by language professionals, students and language enthusiasts at all South African universities. SADiLaR has committed to continue providing a matching funding for this programme.
- The Afrikaans language community continues to thrive and the chapter has committed to continue its support for the growth of this langauge Wiki whilst working to repeat this success in other African language Wikipedias.
- WikiGap, Artfeninism, Whoseknoweldge, Afrocrowd, Black Lunch Table, & LGBTQ+ outreach edit-a-thons - WMZA has committed to continue our efforts to create articles that address the gender, race and sex imbalance on Wikipedia and female editors and grow the Wiki community in South Africa in partnership with these programmes.
- GLAM digitization - the tragic destruction of the Jagger Library at the University of Cape Town in a 2021 fire highlighted the need to digitise content for posterity. Making that content publicly available on Wikimedia Commons would mean it can be used freely on Wikipedia as well thereby expanding its public benefit. Both these goals seek to be met with this project. WMZA intends to continue our search for a collection to digitise with our partners at the University of Cape Town. This is an ongoing project that has yet to gain traction.
- University and regional community incubation – WMZA will embark on a number of projects to encourage the formation of Wiki communities at South African universities. Universities have been identified as ideal locations to encourage a new generation of Wikipedia editors. This commitment has also been extended to supporting community growth in the neighbouring countries of Namibia and eSwatini.
- Climate change outreach and content creation - WMZA hosted the first climate change edit-a-thon with climate change scientists in 2019. We would like to continue hosting these events in the future. Increasing and enhancing reliable climate change content on Wikipedia is important to use and something we have experience in.
- 1Lib1Ref - for the librarians, a project we have been running in South Africa since 2017 and would like to continue running and growing the librarian Wiki community. (awareness)
- Thematic edit-a-thons - we are often present with opportunities to do thematic events with partner organizations that were unforeseen at the start of the year. This project gives us the capacity and flexibility to do a small number of these events as they come up during the year. (capacity,flexibility)

The Wiki Loves events gives the chapter a change to enhance coverage of South African topics on Wikipedia by generating photographic content to illustrate relevant articles. We have a long of experience in hosting these events since 2012. Wiki Loves Plants (formerly Fynbos) is a South Africa specific competition designed to encourage photographs of plant species for use on Wikipedia whilst building partnerships with the iNatralist and botanical communities. - Wikipedia Bookshelf - this Wiki community specific project makes it easier for Wikipedia editors to edit by providing them free access to reliable reference sources that would otherwise cost money to access. (access)
- Kaapse, Xan, & Khoe Wikipedia incubators: working with the Kaapse language community to start a Wikipedia in incubator. Involves training and coaching the community in their efforts to start their own language Wikipedia. This is an ongoing process of community building and formation.
- Other events and activities the chapter will be doing in this period is assisting the Foundation with community feedback, facilitation, strategy development and advocacy. We are targeting the South African Copyrigh Act of 1978 to allow us to have Freedom of Panorama and Fair Use.
South Africa has no Freedom of Panorama, which prevents Wikimedia Volunteers from taking pictures of public art and heritage sites onto Wikimedia Commons. This is because of a law that was put in place in 1978 called the Copyright Act which prevents taking pictures of art or of historical importance to without acknowledging the author or creator of the art.
As an organisation that promotes free knowledge Wikimedia South Africa feels strongly compelled to support the reform of copyright law to allow for easier sharing of knowledge and thereby promote the public interest.
Wikimedia South Africa first got involved in our copyright advocacy efforts following the chapter's experience with organising Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 (WLM 2012). Initially it was hoped by the WLM 2012 organisers that we could accept photographs of both old and recently build monuments. Thereby allowing us to record both colonial era cultural heritage as well as more recent monuments to important events and people such as those celebrating the struggle against apartheid. However, whilst there were no problems with accepting photographs of colonial era monuments, it was correctly pointed out by some WMZA members that we could not accept photographs of more recent public monuments. This created an unacceptable situation whereby we were prevented from covering all of South Africa's public history.
The effort was initially, but always primarily, focused on getting Freedom of Panorama (ZA) included but later expanded to include support for Fair Use.

There are over 30 local and international based organisations and interest groups that have declared interests in supporting or suppressing the Copyright Amendment Bill. We are collaborating with14 organisations who are also advocating for the Copyright Amendment Bill, we believe his collaboration with like-minded organizations, advocacy groups, and industry stakeholders will strengthen our collective voice. Some of our methods and tactics include the following:
- Working with journalists and media outlets to raise awareness about the challenges and issues surrounding current copyright law.
- Offer expert opinions, interviews, and write op-eds to contribute to the public discourse.
- Engage in direct advocacy with policymakers, legislators, and government officials by way of meetings, and do presentations, and briefings to communicate the importance of copyright reform and specific changes needed.
- Engaging the Creative Community to foster a sense of solidarity among creators and artists by involving them in the advocacy process.

The current Wikimedia South Africa team includes:
- Administrator Cape Town: Shupai Mchuchu
- Expectations: remain largely the same as outlined in the 2021 WMZA staffing plan . The expectations for this position can be summarized as communications support, chapter membership tracking, community support project implementation, keeping track of chapter projects for monitoring and evaluation, assisting with report writing, and dealing with chapter bureaucracy. Although the Cape Town administrator can speak a number of African languages she is unable to speak Afrikaans which has created a capacity gap when serving that community that WMZA has sought to fill with the Pretoria Administrator position.
- Administrator Pretoria: Afrikaans Academy agreement
At the request of chapter board members WMZA has experimented with an administrative agreement with the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns (here after known as the Afrikaans Academy) in Pretoria. In return for a modest remuneration of R5000 a month the Academy has lent one of their administrative staff for one day a week to assist in chapter administration in the Pretoria/Johannesburg area and with Afrikaans language projects. This has so far seemed successful but the search for a more dedicated administrator with Afrikaans language skills continues.
- Monitoring & specialized projects:
- Expectations: experience over the past year has proven to the chapter of the need for an experienced chapter member and Wiki community leader to provide both training and managerial oversight of the administrator. The addition of a remuneration line item has invigorated chapter members to fully participate in movement activities and feedback sessions.

Although great progress has been made in develop partnerships and implementing projects it has become clear that the chapter has grown to a point where a CEO with a strong understanding of the movement’s culture, confidence of the chapter’s members and a proven ability to navigate the complex needs and competing demands of our diverse community, needs to be appointed.
In addition to paid staff, the chapter has a strong group of volunteer chapter members who are directly involved in the implementation of a number of projects that they have volunteered to implement. This has allowed the chapter to get a great deal of “value for money” when implementing projects and delivering on impact.

Over the years we've manage to form partnerships which enabled us to achieve our goals. Some of these partners have remained dormant while some are active partners. Below is a list of the active partners that we are looking to continue engage for the duration of this grant application.:
Goethe Institut Johannesburg: This partner offers space, internet as well as light light snacks for us in case we would like to host a meet-up or edit workshop. They have also in the past sponsored us with scholarships for our community members to go attend Wikimania or WikiIndaba Conference. We continue to work with them on several projects such as African language support.
Randburg Library: provides us with free space and internet, we host monthly meet ups at the venue. We've also partnered with them in the 1Lib1Ref project.
We have partnered with SADiLaR (South African Centre for Digital Language Resources within the South African government Department of Science and Innovation) to translate Wikipedia articles in African language Wikipedias by language professionals at all South African universities. SADiLaR has committed to securing matching funding for this programme.

Programme Coordinator: This is a full time staff position based in Johannesburg, and its expectation can be summarised as Oversee the day-to-day execution of programs, ensuring they are on schedule and within budget, Stakeholder Engagement, Assist in the preparation of grant proposals and funding applications, Ensure Chapter adheres to 5 year strategy and foster a culture of continuous improvement within the Chapter, Coordination of Events and Activities especially in Johanesburg. 2 Chapter interns: Thier role is to amplify the visibility of the chapter in the media. We've also noticed that when we bring interns without prior knowledge of Wikipedia in the chapter, they tend to continue edit Wikipedia after their internship has finished. We also want to create employment for young graduates who may find it difficult to break the labour force due to lack of experience.
1 Afrikaans intern: Afrikaans is the 2nd biggest language Wikipedia in Africa. This role is to support this language Wiki and the Afrikaans community. The intern is to help during events as well as provide assistance to Deon who leads the Afrikaans projects.
Bookkeepers: They are not fulltime staff but we pay them as service providers per hour for the time they spent in meetings with us, doing bookkeeping fo us.
Auditors: They are not fulltime staff but we pay them as service providers per hour for the time they spent auditing our finances.
We also have a travel agency service that we use and pay when the need arises.

Programme Coordinator: This is a full time staff position based in Johannesburg, and its expectation can be summarised as Oversee the day-to-day execution of programs, ensuring they are on schedule and within budget, Stakeholder Engagement, Assist in the preparation of grant proposals and funding applications, Ensure Chapter adheres to 5 year strategy and foster a culture of continuous improvement within the Chapter, Coordination of Events and Activities especially in Johanesburg. Chapter membership tracking, community support project implementation, keeping track of chapter projects for monitoring and evaluation, assisting with report writing, and dealing with chapter bureaucracy.
Afrikaans Administrator: Although the Cape Town administrator can speak a number of African languages she is unable to speak Afrikaans which has created a capacity gap when serving that community that WMZA has sought to fill with the Pretoria Administrator position.
2 Chapter interns: Thier role is to amplify the visibility of the chapter in the media. We've also noticed that when we bring interns without prior knowledge of Wikipedia in the chapter, they tend to continue edit Wikipedia after their internship has finished. We also want to create employment for young graduates who may find it difficult to break the labour force due to lack of experience.
1 Afrikaans intern: Afrikaans is the 2nd biggest language Wikipedia in Africa. This role is to support this language Wiki and the Afrikaans community. The intern is to help during events as well as provide assistance to Deon who leads the Afrikaans projects.

- We are looking to hire an additional full time staff who will act as a Program Coordinator to ensure that our new chapter strategy is actionable and achievable within set timelines. This person will also be based in Johannesburg to support the community in the Johannesburg region since our chapter members are spread across South Africa with most active volunteers based in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
