Since 2023, Wikimedia Indonesia has been actively engaged in various routine endeavours within the large framework of Wikimedia Indonesia 2023–2024. These efforts encompass a spectrum of activities, from training sessions on Wikimedia projects like Wikipedia, Wikisource, and Wikidata, to conducting internal research within the Wikimedia communities in Indonesia. Additionally, we have organized multiple competitions to enrich content across platforms such as Wikisource, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. Furthermore, we have been dedicated to empowering 14 Wikimedia communities in Indonesia through diverse forms of assistance.
Through these initiatives, we noted significant advancements across various fronts. Notably, progress has been made on the Learning Management System platform, facilitating Wikipedia editing courses for individuals. Furthermore, the support extended has sparked enthusiasm within the Indonesian Wikimedia community, evidenced by an uptick in funding proposals for book acquisitions and community-driven activities. On the other hand, we also recognised a gap in our impact, prompting internal research to identify the specific needs of the Wikimedia communities in Indonesia.
Drawing on this experience, we intend to bring the focus back to the activities below:
Approach 1: Engagement. Engagement is our primary approach in initiating collaborative endeavours with local or international partners. This actively contributes to advancing initiatives the Education and GLAM+Wikidata teams led, as they actively seek partnership support to coordinate joint activities.
The strategies to achieve this approach are:
- Establishing connections with external partners, encompassing nonprofit organisations, government ministries, and agencies. This endeavour aims to familiarise relevant stakeholders with Wikimedia Indonesia and its initiatives, including Wikimedia projects. By doing so, we provide them with insights into our mission and create avenues for potential collaboration.
- Identify areas for sustained collaboration with external partners, particularly regarding enhancing content and awareness across Wikimedia projects. This may entail arranging competitions on platforms (such as Wikipedia, Wikisource, or Wikidata), or digitising GLAM institutions' collections in Indonesia in order to upload them to Wikimedia Commons. This aligns with Subprograms 1.2. and 1.3. outlined in Work Plan 1 of our strategic plan.
Approach 2: Capacity building. Our focus is on capacity building, which aims to encourage diverse segments of the public, not just the Wikimedia community, to sustain their involvement in the Wikimedia movement. Additionally, we prioritise empowering our staff to enhance their skills in specific areas.
In this approach, we customise activities according to audience segments:
- General public. Up to now, we have conducted 37 training sessions on Wikipedia, Wiktionary, and Wikibooks, targeting both the general public and students while also engaging various local language Wikimedia projects. This training approach has proven effective in attracting new users to Wikimedia projects and empowering existing users to serve as trainers. It is a win-win situation, as we attract newcomers interested in contributing while providing opportunities for seasoned users to impart their knowledge and experience to newcomers. We also tailor our training sessions to cater to different proficiency levels, ranging from basic to advanced. Additionally, we occasionally offer WikiLatih Courses as a platform for individuals seeking certification for their Wikipedia knowledge. This aligns with Subprograms 1.1. outlined in Work Plan 1 of our strategic plan.
- Wikimedia communities in Indonesia. Currently, 14 Wikimedia community groups benefit from support provided by Wikimedia Indonesia. These communities receive various forms of assistance, including financial aid and other resources, based on their specific needs and requests. Recognising each community's diverse priorities and activities, Wikimedia Indonesia endeavours to accommodate this diversity by offering universal support. This includes logistical assistance for monthly gatherings, grants for book acquisitions, mini-grants to facilitate community-involved activities, and organising the annual WikiNusantara gathering. This aligns with Subprograms 2.1., 2.2., and 2.3. outlined in Work Plan 2 of our strategic plan.
Approach 3: Research. During this grant period, our focus remains on advancing our research initiatives. Specifically, we aim to gauge the public's awareness of Wikimedia Indonesia and its projects while exploring opportunities to contribute to decision-making processes on significant issues. This aligns with Subprogram 3.1. of Work Plan 3 on Mapping public awareness on Wikipedia, and Subprogram 5.1. of Work Plan 5 on Visibility in the Indonesian State Ministries/Government Agencies, non-government organisations, and international organisations, outlined in our current strategic plan.
In addition, we are examining the impact of the Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata initiatives on technological growth in Indonesia. With this in mind, we intend to provide research help and urge cultural activists and academics to submit ideas for research funding, with a focus on the two Wikimedia projects. The results of this research are expected to inform future activity prioritisation and strengthen our advocacy efforts related to copyright and open data.

- 12. Will you be working with any internal (Wikimedia) or external partners? Describe the characteristics of these partnerships and bring a few examples of the most significant partnerships. (required)
Yes, most of the proposed activities will involve many external partners and the Wikimedia community in Indonesia.
We aim to establish enduring, sustainable partnerships with external entities, spanning educational institutions, cultural organizations, and non-profit entities that align with the mission of the Wikimedia movement. As an illustration, our partnership with the UNESCO Jakarta Office involves organizing thematic edit-a-thons to showcase crucial cultural topics on the Indonesian Wikipedia. This initiative ensures the availability of comprehensive, pertinent, and well-referenced information for the public. It serves as an initial engagement to familiarize ourselves with each other's initiatives and explore collaborative opportunities aligned with our mutual goals.
Regarding the Wikimedia communities in Indonesia, we provide moral and financial support to foster their growth and innovation within the Wikimedia movement. Additionally, we engage them in diverse activities across different locations as part of our decentralization efforts and capacity-building initiatives. These endeavours aim to empower community members to take on roles as Wikipedia trainers and actively participate in the implementation of various projects.
