Wiki Loves Folklore is an international photography contest which aims to document tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the world. The vision of the project is to bridge the local folklore and cultural gap around the world on Wikimedia commons in free license.
Wiki Loves Folklore 2024, now in its sixth edition, is an international photography contest that invites photographers to contribute media (photographs, video, and audio) showcasing their local folk culture to Wikimedia Commons. These contributions are made available under free licenses for use on Wikipedia and other platforms with proper attribution. This contest celebrates and highlights various aspects of regional folk culture, encompassing folk dances, folk music, folk traditions, culinary delights, attire, folklore, and a wide array of traditions, including ballads, folktales, legends, traditional performances, games, seasonal festivities, customs, folk arts, religious practices, mythology, and more.
Simultaneously, there is a concurrent writing contest known as "Feminism and Folklore" taking place on Wikipedia. This initiative aims to enhance the coverage of women in folklore and the intangible heritage of folk culture from diverse regions. It encompasses various elements such as folk dances, folk music, traditional activities, games, cuisine, attire, folklore, and traditions, spanning ballads, folktales, fairy tales, legends, traditional performances, games, seasonal observances, calendar customs, folk arts, folk religion, mythology, and beyond. The ultimate goal of this campaign is to document and preserve the world's rich intangible cultural heritage.
In our grant application, we aim to tackle the challenges associated with documenting local culture by actively participating in the Wiki Loves Folklore photography competition. Through this initiative, we plan to upload images showcasing both tangible and intangible aspects of living heritage onto Wikimedia Commons. Additionally, our involvement in the writing competition focused on feminism and folklore serves a dual purpose by not only contributing to cultural preservation but also by addressing the gender gap on Wikipedia. These strategies will collectively support us in effectively addressing the challenge of documenting and promoting local culture while fostering inclusivity and gender diversity within the Wikimedia community.
The Wiki Loves Folklore International photography contest plays a pivotal role in promoting the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage, aligning with the principles outlined in the 2003 UNESCO Convention. By encouraging participants from diverse backgrounds to capture and share images representing various aspects of their cultural heritage, the contest contributes to the documentation and dissemination of intangible heritage. Through the power of visual storytelling, it helps raise awareness about the significance of these cultural practices, rituals, and traditions. Moreover, the contest fosters a sense of community engagement, enabling individuals and groups to actively participate in the preservation of their heritage, a key aspect of the convention's ethos. By amplifying intangible cultural heritage on a global platform like Wikimedia Commons, Wiki Loves Folklore facilitates its transmission across generations, making it more accessible and relevant in the contemporary world while respecting the spirit of the 2003 UNESCO Convention.

In this edition owing to our past experiences, we are committed to establishing a robust team structure that will ensure the success of our project. The core of our team will be led by the Chief Coordinator, who will oversee the project's execution. Supporting the Chief Coordinator, there will be two Regional Coordinators responsible for specific geographical areas, providing localized insights and support.
To ensure fiscal responsibility, a dedicated Fiscal Sponsor will meticulously manage expenses and finances, ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the project's duration.
Our Board of Advisors, comprised of experts and experienced individuals, will play a pivotal role in guiding our international team, providing invaluable insights and effective strategies for the contest's success.
We recognize the importance of accessibility to information, and to that end, we will create and maintain a dedicated Wikimedia Commons page that will serve as a comprehensive resource hub for all information pertaining to the international team and the project.
Our project will extend beyond international borders, with a network of local organizers in each participating country, responsible for orchestrating and executing the contest locally. To ensure the quality of articles created during the 'Feminism and Folklore' project, Language Coordinators will be appointed for each Wikipedia language edition. These Language Coordinators will offer guidance to the jury, ensuring that the articles adhere to our project's objectives.
Finally, an independent International Jury Team will be entrusted with the crucial responsibility of selecting the winning images for 'Wiki Loves Folklore' Their impartial judgment will play a key role in recognizing and promoting the most outstanding contributions to this cultural and artistic endeavor
- 12. Will you be working with any internal (Wikimedia) or external partners? Describe the characteristics of these partnerships and bring a few examples of the most significant partnerships. (required)
Yes we will be working on both internal and external partnerships to enhance our collaborative efforts. Internal partnerships often involve close collaboration with various Wikimedia chapters and usergroups, aiming to strengthen our core projects and initiatives. External partnerships encompass a diverse range of organizations, including folklore institutions, media partners, Glam institutions.
We aim to maintain our collaborations with the current 73 affiliates and Wikipedia community groups. Alongside our robust existing partnerships with movement affiliates, which have experienced significant growth over the past five years, we intend to broaden our network by establishing new regional and language partnerships for both our photography and Wikipedia campaign editions.
Furthermore, we will also be responsible for managing our existing media alliances and partnerships with platforms such as leitrimobserver.ie, noticiasdealava.eus, dnevnikjuga.rs, scholasticworld.blogspot.com, shotkit.com/news, americanfolkloresociety.org, allevents.in, mediatalks.uol.com.br, democraticunderground.com, elperiodic.com, novini247.com, truescoopnews.com, and babushahi.com. An additional initiative for this year involves ensuring regional and continental media exposure through the collaboration of our regional coordinators. In the previous year, our project news was featured in numerous countries on prominent news portals. We intend to expand these efforts to encompass the ESEAP, SAARC, Europe, North America, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia regions in online print media and newspapers. This aligns with our new marketing and promotional strategy to disseminate our campaign's news to local audiences effectively.
In addition, we have actively assisted our regional coordinators in establishing partnerships with local glam, photography, and research institutions. This approach follows a bottom-up strategy aimed at systematically nurturing an ecosystem where global intangible heritage receives support and expansion through regional collaborations. On the international front, we remain committed to our engagement with UNESCO partners, facilitated by the collaborative efforts of the GLAM and culture teams, as well as the partnerships team of the Wikipedia Foundation. We have maintained ongoing communication with these entities regarding our shared objectives in this regard.
