One of the major programs of NaijaCoder, Inc. is the Naijacoder summer intensive camp. The program teaches low-income students in Nigeria the basic math and logic of computer programming, and provides additional resources to apply to colleges and universities abroad. NaijaCoder instills a passion for computer science by not only providing the how but also the why of programming, and applications to real world problems. NaijaCoder strengthens the resumes of its students, and provides access to invaluable resources that its students are able to attend universities abroad, further diversify computer science education, and better provide for themselves and loved ones. NaijaCoder hosted its first in-person successful summer intensive in Abuja, Nigeria in August 2023. Students with no background in computer science were able to successfully implement and write simple to semi-complex algorithms after only two weeks of learning. The intensive also had guest lecturers from Cornell, Harvard, GIEVA, and EducationUSA who spoke about electrical engineering, coding and climate change, and resources for applying to colleges and universities abroad. All of NaijaCoder is provided to students free of charge, with lunch provided each day and free access to computers, wifi, and stable electricity at the school. NaijaCoder is applying for a grant for its 2024 iteration, and will use the funds to increase its class size and provide subsidies for students’ travel costs. As NaijaCoder expands and matures, different levels of curriculum will be offered, so that returning students can continue advancing their skills, and new students can begin with the basics. All team members are volunteers. For now, none of us are salaried but we have full-time jobs that pay us. Here are brief bios of key members of the team:
1) Daniel Alabi Daniel Alabi, Ph.D., (http://alabidan.me) is a Junior Fellow of the Simons Society of Fellows and a postdoctoral researcher at Columbia University. He earned his S.M. and Ph.D. from Harvard University where he studied theoretical computer science and before that obtained his undergraduate degrees in mathematics and computer science from Carleton College where he was a Kellogg International Scholar. Between starting graduate school at Harvard, he was a Kernel Engineer in the Distributed Systems Team at MongoDB. He is passionate about teaching and democratizing access to computer science education.
2) Alida Monaco Alida is a graduate of Harvard University with a degree in Environmental Science and Public Policy and a current Climate Change & Sustainability Analyst with ICF International. Alida has deep experience in applying her coding skills to climate and sustainability issues, having published a paper in the Journal for Sustainable Finance & Investment. Alida is passionate about increasing coding education access as a tool for students to address real world issues. She was an instructor for NaijaCoder in 2023.
3) Philip Adama Abel Philip is a Senior Software Engineer at Twilio. He obtained his Bachelors and Masters degrees from MIT and Georgia Tech respectively. He has organized and run coding camps twice in Nigeria, where over fifty students have benefitted for free. Philip grew up and completed highschool in Nigeria. He seeks to improve the quality of education and life of Nigerian students through programs that teach them adaptable, industry-relevant skills such as coding/programming.
4) Tolu Alabi Tolu is the CEO of Cleva, a fintech start-up. She is also the founder and managing operator of Next In Line, an NGO that empowers Nigerian youths through summer Basketball training camps. Tolu has significant experience organizing youth empowerment programmes in Nigeria and brings concrete logistical and process-management experience to NaijaCoder. She earned dual degrees in Computer Science and Math at Grinnell College, and has an MBA from Stanford Business School.
5) Lekan Afuye Lekan is currently a co-founder of EchoIcs, a hardware startup focused on developing flexible wireless integrated circuits. He completed his Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering at Cornell University in 2022. He is passionate about improving access to education through technology. Lekan has been involved in organizing a mathematics quiz competition between high schools in Accra Ghana and was previously involved in an ed-tech startup in Nigeria.

For the 2023 summer program, we partnered with the following organizations: 1) EducationUSA (affiliated with U.S. Embassies): A staff member from EducationUSA in the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria gave a presentation at the NaijaCoder 2023 summer program. The presentation was about how to apply to universities in the U.S. 2) GIEVA (Global Integrated Education Volunteers Association) International: This is the international representative for SAT and ACT in Nigeria. They sent staff to give a presentation to the students in our program. The presentation was about volunteer resources and application materials for applying to Canadian and U.S. colleges.
