One of the major programs of NaijaCoder, Inc. is the Naijacoder summer intensive camp. The program teaches low-income students in Nigeria the basic math and logic of computer programming, and provides additional resources to apply to colleges and universities abroad. NaijaCoder instills a passion for computer science by not only providing the how but also the why of programming, and applications to real world problems. NaijaCoder strengthens the resumes of its students, and provides access to invaluable resources that its students are able to attend universities abroad, further diversify computer science education, and better provide for themselves and loved ones. NaijaCoder hosted its first in-person successful summer intensive in Abuja, Nigeria in August 2023. Students with no background in computer science were able to successfully implement and write simple to semi-complex algorithms after only two weeks of learning. The intensive also had guest lecturers from Cornell, Harvard, GIEVA, and EducationUSA who spoke about electrical engineering, coding and climate change, and resources for applying to colleges and universities abroad. All of NaijaCoder is provided to students free of charge, with lunch provided each day and free access to computers, wifi, and stable electricity at the school. NaijaCoder is applying for a grant for its 2024 iteration, and will use the funds to increase its class size and provide subsidies for students’ travel costs. As NaijaCoder expands and matures, different levels of curriculum will be offered, so that returning students can continue advancing their skills, and new students can begin with the basics.
