Our programs, approaches, and strategies for January 27th, 2024, are centered around shedding light on the experiences of Jehovah's Witnesses, a religious minority who demonstrated remarkable resilience and unwavering principles during Nazi Germany's oppressive regime. Despite facing grave challenges, they steadfastly refused to participate in military service or salute the Nazi flag, attributing their salvation to a higher purpose.

Program Overview:

Editathon for Missing Biographies: One of our key initiatives is to conduct an editathon focused on creating biographies of Jehovah's Witnesses who lived during the Nazi era. This effort seeks to address the current gap in our encyclopedia's coverage of this important historical period. By the end of the editathon, we aim to have enriched our encyclopedia with well-researched entries, making it a more valuable resource for readers interested in this topic. Through this approach, we honor the resilience and sacrifices of the Jehovah's Witness community.

Exhibition at the Memorial Museum: In collaboration with the Memorial Museum, we plan to host an exhibition comprising 40 informative panels. These panels will be open to the public and serve as an educational tool to raise awareness about the Jehovah's Witnesses' history during the Holocaust. Our specially trained Wikipedian guides will be on hand to provide context and explanations to visitors. Our primary objective is to encourage visitors not only to learn about this crucial period but also to take concrete steps toward supporting Wikimedia projects. We hope to inspire them to join our association and actively contribute to Wikipedia, sharing their knowledge and insights on various subjects.

Academic Conference on the Shoah: As part of our efforts to bridge the gap between Wikimedia projects and the academic community, we are organizing a conference featuring three prominent historians specializing in the Holocaust. These scholars, Marcello Pezzetti and Claudio Vercelli from Italy, and Detlef Garbe from Germany, are not only renowned in their field but also have articles in the Italian Wikipedia, emphasizing their commitment to disseminating knowledge. The conference, open to the public, aims to demonstrate the symbiotic relationship between our encyclopedia and academia. By showcasing the contributions of these respected historians, we underline the reliability and credibility of the sources used in our Wikimedia projects. This collaboration between academia and Wikimedia enhances the overall quality of information available to our readers.

Challenges Addressed: Our initiatives address several significant challenges:

Historical Gap in Wikipedia: The lack of comprehensive coverage on the experiences of Jehovah's Witnesses during Nazi Germany is a historical gap in Wikipedia. By conducting the editathon and creating missing biographies, we aim to rectify this oversight, providing a more thorough and accurate representation of history.

Public Engagement: Engaging the public is vital for the success of our mission. The exhibition at the Memorial Museum and the guided tours are designed to captivate visitors and encourage them to become active participants in Wikimedia projects. By involving the public, we hope to foster a sense of responsibility and shared ownership of our collective history.

Academic Collaboration: Collaborating with esteemed historians in the field of Holocaust studies helps bridge the gap between Wikipedia and academia. This partnership ensures that the information we provide is not only accessible but also academically rigorous, reinforcing the credibility of our Wikimedia projects.

In conclusion, our programs, approaches, and strategies for January 27th, 2024, aim to honor the resilience of Jehovah's Witnesses during Nazi Germany, fill historical gaps on Wikipedia, engage the public, and strengthen the academic connections that enrich the quality of information on our Wikimedia projects. We are committed to creating a more inclusive and comprehensive historical record for the benefit of all.
