Education Program

The Wikimedia Serbia Education Program has encouraged young people to contribute to Wikipedia and other Wiki projects of free knowledge through the development of quality content since 2005, by achieving long-term and sustainable cooperation with educational institutions, non-governmental organizations focused on education, talent centers, etc. Wikimedia Serbia strives to leave a deep mark in systemic changes for education. In addition to the basic goal, which is to popularize Wikipedia and other Wiki projects in an academic environment, Wikimedia Serbia strives to create significant experience through the aforementioned collaborations, which is later shared in academic articles, scientific events and as arguments in discussions that take place concerning the introduction of Wiki projects into the teaching curricula. We will continue these initiatives in the coming year, and the question of editors' motivation to edit Wikipedia and their retention will have a special place.

Rich work experience has been gained over the last 13 years and a large number of students became familiar with Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikibooks, Wikimedia Commons in this way. In our work, we encounter several challenges, related to the technical conditions in which schools are located, the lack of internet connections and laptops. We have overcome this by having our own equipment that we carry with us. Another important item is the stigma about Wikipedia that still exists in the academic community, especially in faculties. We realized that misunderstanding the goals of our activities is one important reason why people have an inadequate response to Wikipedia. That is why we insist on holding meetings and increased communication. During the next year, we will continue to participate in the processes that should result in the introduction of Wiki projects into the teaching curriculum. Also, we will deal with improving the program by mapping potential challenges and taking a proactive approach to solving them in order to further raise the quality of our activities.

Through the Education Program, we seek to influence two important strategic goals, namely increasing sustainability in our movement and investing in skills development and leadership development. We achieve this by implementing Wikipedia projects in schools, accredited seminars for professional development of teachers and the Edu Wiki camp. Through all three projects, we insist on the decentralization of activities in order to cover the largest possible target group, but also to reach those people who have not had the opportunity to get involved in our projects so far. The strategy will continue to be our guide in the implementation of existing activities, but also in planning new ones. In this sense, we will try to include even more educational institutions with which we have not had a partnership so far. We plan to expand all projects by including new collaborators, and we will especially insist on promoting projects among young people and increasing the number of collaborators, such as Wiki ambassadors.

International cooperation helps us to share our experience with others, but also to learn from others. By attending a large number of meetings at the regional and international level, we follow new trends in education and adapt existing activities to new practice conditions. One of our significant international activities is participation in groups such as EWOC, mentorship program and several international academic and professional conferences and events. During the next year, we will continue to be involved in international activities, where we will learn from others, but also to share our experience and create learning patterns.

GLAM Program

The GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) Program of Wikimedia Serbia focuses on achieving collaboration between Wikimedia and cultural institutions in Serbia, such as museums, libraries, archives, and galleries. This collaboration aims to improve the representation and availability of cultural heritage on Wikimedia projects. The program encompasses a set of approaches and strategies to achieve its goals. Within the framework of the GLAM program, a diverse range of activities is carried out that fulfills different goals. The most important project is the Wikipedian in residence, which involves the detailed processing of materials from the cultural institution and their release on Wiki projects. In addition, various edit-a-thons are organized, as well as thematic activities or competitions, which, depending on the topic, aim to improve the predetermined goal. One of the key approaches is through content contributions. Wikimedia Serbia collaborates with cultural institutions to facilitate the contribution of digitized resources, images, documents, and other content to Wikimedia Commons. This enriches Wikimedia projects with multimedia files related to the cultural heritage. In addition, the Program supports writing and improvement of Wikipedia articles and Wikidata related to cultural heritage topics. This involves working closely with experts from cultural institutions to ensure accurate and well-sourced information.

The GLAM program also organizes edit-a-thons and workshops for greater involvement of volunteers, as well as employees of cultural institutions in writing and improvement of content. These activities educate participants about editing Wikipedia and encourage them to contribute. This achieves the independence of employees in cultural institutions for editing Wiki projects, which further has a positive effect on the sustainability and growth of the community. Furthermore, the program focuses on building the capacity of cultural institutions' staff, helping them to understand Wikimedia's projects and principles. This allows them to effectively contribute and collaborate with the Wikimedia community.

Strategies employed include collaboration, content integration, community engagement, and awareness and education. Wikimedia Serbia cooperates with cultural institutions to establish partnerships that have common goals. The program creates a space for mutual learning and resource sharing. By involving experts from cultural institutions, Wikimedia Serbia aims to integrate accurate and reliable information into Wikimedia projects, improving the quality and credibility of content. The program involves volunteers and cultural professionals in joint activities, fostering a sense of community and common purpose. It also includes raising awareness among cultural institutions about the potential of Wikimedia projects to represent their collections and raise public awareness of cultural heritage. These activities directly address the challenges the program faces. The limited digital presence of many cultural heritage materials is being addressed by digitizing and sharing and releasing these resources on the Wikimedia repository. Ensuring accurate and well-received information on cultural heritage topics is solved through cooperation with cultural institutions and experts.

Diversity Progam

Diversity Progam is aimed at creating and further developing a more inclusive and healthy community by working on the mission to make knowledge accessible to everyone. One of the main challenges within this program is the underrepresentation of marginalized and vulnerable groups (such as women, members of LGBITQA+ communities, people with disabilities, and minorities) on Wikimedia projects. This challenge is being tackled by empowering vulnerable groups to become active participants in Wikimedia projects through various trainings, workshops, and technical innovations which can ease the process of their integrations. Moreover, this challenge is being addressed by working on spreading free knowledge about underrepresented groups and various forms of discrimination they face on Wikimedia projects (through projects such as Internation Roma Day, Wikigap, Wiki Loves Pride, etc.). All activities that are planned for tackling the challenge of underrepresentation are in line with the Strategic goal of Wikimedia Serbia to promote inclusivity and diversity of the community and content on Wikimedia projects, and the 2030 Movement Strategy goal to ensure safety and inclusion. Additionally, the Diversity program is focused on the challenge of the retention of editors on Wikimedia projects and their involvement in activities of Wikimedia Serbia. This challenge is addressed by organizing myriad activities aimed at increasing the editors’ motivation (such as competitions, thematic weeks, and edit-a-thons) and offline gatherings of members of the Wikipedia Community (such as the WikiLive conference) during which they can network and learn from each other and share ideas. Through microgrants, Wikimedia Serbia also strives to support and empower volunteers to start implementing their own projects aimed at spreading free knowledge on Wikipedia projects. By working on those projects, volunteers can develop leadership and organizational skills and gain valuable experience. The goal behind all the activities regarding community support is to increase sustainability within the movement. Diversity Program is also focused on including volunteers, and working with partners from different parts of Serbia. This goal is in line with the strategic goal of Wikimedia Serbia to increase decentralization.

The annual call for projects

In addition to the mentioned programs and projects within them, Wikimedia Serbia every year publishes a call for annual projects and give grants to volunteers who are part of the community or want to join it. In order to get a better response and get better proposals, the call is realized in September, and the final decision of approved proposals is made by the end of October. Due to the mentioned time frame, WMRS is not able to specify projects in the annual plan, but EUR 10,000.00 will be allocated in the budget for these needs. The projects are mainly led by volunteers who have experience and expertise, but also new collaborators who want to cooperate with the organization and receive financial support from it, as well as advice and education about Wikimedia projects.

Approaches and focus

Within the mentioned programs, WMRS is focusing on decentralization and making sure that projects are presented and implemented in various cities in Serbia. In this way, organizations strives to provide equal opportunities for every community member and thus to improve inclusion. WMRS is also interested in providing help and support for communities in Balkan countries and have active role in the CEE hub. Organzation is a member of Wikimedia Europe from May 2023, which will use as an opportunity to increase the voices of underrepresented communities.

In addition to the above, it is important to note that Wikimedia Serbia has an average of 10 projects led by volunteers (together with their teams) within the annual plan, as well as 6-9 projects that will receive microgrants during the 2024 for the realization of their ideas. Most of these projects are led by volunteers who are already involved in WMRS’ activities for years, but some of them will be new to the organization, since we want to engage new people.

Wikipedians in residence (within GLAM Program) are also part of WMRS’ team as well. Since they are selected during the year, it’s not possible to add them in the annual plan.

12. Will you be working with any internal (Wikimedia) or external partners? Describe the characteristics of these partnerships and bring a few examples of the most significant partnerships. (required)

Wikimedia Serbia has a wide network of partners, both internal and external. In terms of internal partners, WMRS mostly cooperates with the Wikimedians of Republika of Srpska, but we also plan to strengthen cooperation with Shared Knowledge Macedonia and GLAM Macedonia (which will soon become one affiliation). Regional connectivity provides the possibility of organizing joint events, community networking and launching projects aimed at cross-enrichment of Wikimedia projects.

External partnerships refer to cooperation with educational institutions (schools and faculties), organizations that deal with informal education, GLAM institutions (museums, libraries, archives, institutions, institutes...), as well as non-governmental organizations that specialize in certain issues (human rights, minorities...). All collaborations are established with long-term and sustainability in mind. Possible models aimed at mutual benefit and achieving better results are presented. Whether it is involving students contributing to Wikipedia, digitizing cultural heritage or educating members of underrepresented communities, Wikimedia Serbia strives to multiply resources with partners and work together to achieve the same goal.

Specific examples of these partnerships are the Wiki-librarian project, which has been implemented for years with the "Svetozar Marković" University Library. The project is completely self-sustaining, as it has a built team of librarians who carry out activities from year to year, and aims to network and educate librarians from all over Serbia regarding the use of Wikipedia in libraries, digitization and release of materials from numerous cultural institutions in Serbia.

Another example can be found within the Education program. Wikimedia Serbia has been cooperating with the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering in Belgrade from 2017. The collaboration began with the creation of articles on Wikipedia by students, and later expanded to Wikidata and the project of creating a Tutorials on editing Wikipedia, which was particularly significant. The school also supported Wikimedia Serbia in organizing the 2019 CEE Conference by providing their human and other resources to produce a video about the conference. Recently, the possibility arose for Wikimedia Serbia to contribute to the creation of a textbook on the faculty course of Social Network Analysis. Education program manager participated in the preparation of the text for a special chapter on Wikipedia. The chapter will contain the theoretical part, the history of the creation of Wikipedia as well as other things important for the development of Wikipedia, but also the practical part of creating articles on it. This is one example of how long-term cooperation with an educational institution can contribute to the achievement of long-term goals, because one of the efforts of Wikimedia Serbia is to include Wikipedia in the teaching curriculum.

Another very good example is the Wiki Senior project. It has been implemented for several years now in partnership with Belgrade City Library. Moreover, this year the project was extended and it was realized in the partnership with the City Library "Karlo Bijelicki" in Sombor, a city in the North of Serbia, which is a step forward towards the goal of decentralization. Wiki Senior gathers many senior citizens who have the possibility to become active editors on Serbian Wikipedia and contribute to the spread of free knowledge on various topics.
