  • Name of Organization: N/A
  • Title of Proposal: Activating Botswana 2022/23
  • Amount awarded: 22750 USD, 20000 BWP
  • Amount spent: 236322.03 BWP

Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.

Our strategies were implemented through community outreach programs like in-person events, online calls, one on one trainings and panel discussions. We also have a whatsapp group where we constantly communicate as members of the community to share knowledge and information as well as making enquiries and asking for help.

There were no changes made to the proposed activities.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals?

Our constant communication with members of the community through facebook helped us to recruit new editors.

Constant communications with members of the community through whatsapp made it easy for us to do the follow ups and address challenges where participants had one. Sharing every tutorial videos also made it easy for members of the community to follow through the training in their spare time and ask for clarity where possible. Allowing members of the community to contact us individually when they need help also boosted our community participation because some people felt more free on 1 on 1 training than being in a group.

3. Would you say that your project had any innovations? Are there things that you did very differently than you have seen them done by others?

We introduced in person training incentives in the form of our merchandise and it worked in our favor. Every participant wanted to emerge victorious to receive the gift.

We also introduced the minimum number of articles that qualifies 1 to be considered the winner of the challenge and that worked because every participant strived to meet and surpass the minimum number of articles.

4. Please describe how different communities participated and/or were informed about your work.

Our community was informed through facebook page: wikimedia Community User Group Botswana which is the most effective : https://www.facebook.com/ActivatingBotswana

instagram : Wikimedia Botswana: https://www.instagram.com/wikimediabw/ Twitter: Wikimedia Activating Botswana User Group : https://twitter.com/WABCUsergroup

5. Documentation of your impact. Please use the two spaces below to share files and links that help tell your story and impact. This can be documentation that shows your results through testimonies, videos, sound files, images (photos and infographics, etc.) social media posts, dashboards, etc.

  • Upload Documents and Files
  • Here is an additional field to type in URLs.
Every project we did had its own project page and the community had the main project page where we document links to every project page and dashboards.

6. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Strongly agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Strongly agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Strongly agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Strongly agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Agree
G. Increased participants' feelings of belonging and connection to the movement. Agree

7. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

We have visited 2 different radios and Botswana television to talk about our community and this also helped us to bring participants on board.

We have had a panel discussion where we were addressing the issue of bridging the gender gap in the internet space. This was our effort to bring on board one of the underrepresented groups which is women. We have had projects specifically for creating content about women as a way of increasing the representation of women.

CHALLENGES Difficulties in proving the notability of our subjects when writing Wikipedia articles Costly Internet service and poor internet connection.

Part 2: Your main learning edit

8. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

Our learning priorities were centered around creating content in Gender gap, Age (regency) , Geography, Language, Cultural background, ethnicity, religion and racial. We have learnt that we did not have much content created in our local language setswana. We tried to balance our learning priorities between gender gap, geography, language and culture. So far we have managed to cover creating content about women as a way of closing the gender gap, this was done through the wikiquote challenge and the Art & Feminism challenge. With this project we have learnt there are many notable Batswana women who don't have articles in wikipedia both in English and Setswana

We have had a wikidata challenge where we were populating villages in Botswana covering geography and with this project we have learnt that many Botswana village articles are stubs and they need to be improved.

We have hosted 3 setswana challenge projects with the aim of creating content in our local language, setswana. This project has taught us that a lot still needs to be done when it comes to creating content in setswana and closing the language gap. There are so many articles in English wikipedia that need to be translated to setswana.

9. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?

n/a

10. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Our new priorities is to increase our community outreach coverage through media, social media and school club projects. We are hoping that if we can increase our presence in social media we will be able to impact other people who want to join us and be part of us. We want to start teaching our followers on facebook about our community and how they can contribute. Our presence in the media will reach different parts of the country, helping us to bridge the distance gap between us and members of the community. The school club project will help us to have a base in every school that we approach. This will help in retaining editors and organizers in different schools.

11. If you were sitting with a friend to tell them one thing about your work during this fund, what would it be (think of inspiring or fascinating moments, tough challenges, interesting anecdotes, or anything that feels important to you)?

Great moments or Fascinating moments would be to meet different kinds of people from different backgrounds creating a community for them and giving them a sense of belonging whilst contributing knowledge that will be accessible to everyone and having the narrate their stories through Wikipedia especially in our native language. Tough challenges we experience is mostly around when we run online trainings which a re not accommodative for everyone as internet data in Botswana is expensive as well as having editor having devices that they can easily research well and edit articles on Wikipedia.

12. Please share resources that would be useful to share with other Wikimedia organizations so that they can learn from, adapt or build upon your work. For instance, guides, training material, presentations, work processes, or any other material the team has created to document and transfer knowledge about your work and can be useful for others. Please share any specific resources that you are creating, adapting/contextualizing in ways that are unique to your context (i.e. training material).

Number of participants Number of participants 60 72
Number of editors Number of editors that continue to participate/retained after activities 40 46 We have managed to reach the target of participants through in-person trainings that we hosted through out this quarter. Despite having challenges of the venue due to limited resources forcing us to have 1 in-person training session per project which reduces the chances for us to do outreach to other parts of of the city to reach more people.

Due to limited resources we have been stuck to a single University as the host of our activities which gives students from other Universities a perception that maybe this project if for that particular University despite our efforts to advertise through our social media pages.

As a small team we are realised that we need more capacity so that we can effectively work and be able to grow and be creative as a team and effectively run trainings and be able to create training materials as well as grow social media engagement without getting being to broad or general and not being able to give attention to key factors to help build a base in our community.

We shared them via our facebook page and WhatsApp group and physical meet up after each program.

28. How often do you currently share what you have learned with other Wikimedia Foundation grantees, and learn from them?

We do this occasionally (less than once a month)

29. How does your organization currently share mutual learning with other grantees?

As a new emerging and growing community we sometimes do one on one discussions with established reps from established communities such as Wikimedia Uganda and Nigeria. In some cases we discuss with Wikimedia Rwanda since we relate much with them as an emerging community to learn from their experience as well. There we document our activities and processes and experience on our community project page below which is visible to anyone. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Community_User_Group_Botswana
