Swahili Climate Voices

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

The Swahili Wikipedia has been active for many years but records a huge gap in Climate change-related content. One out of every 8 community members contributes to climate change articles. A search result on English Wikipedia using categories (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Climate_change) shows that articles related to climate change are missing on Swahili Wikipedia. The over 500 articles on climate change on the English Wikipedia are written in technical and advanced words that would be difficult for people whose language proficiency is Swahili. Even so, many of the said articles are not available on Swahili Wikipedia. Stories of biodiversity loss and environmental degradation (https://www.usaid.gov/tanzania/environment) experienced in Tanzania should be communicated in a language accessible to the native Tanzanians who need a good understanding of these impacts to mitigate and adapt to the challenges facing them.

Swahili Climate Voices is a campaign that seeks to document climate change-related topics on Swahili Wikipedia to raise awareness and knowledge about the topic on the internet through Wikimedia projects. Through this campaign, we hope to bridge both the topic and language gap while creating opportunities for people to access climate change information in a way that would build awareness of the various effects of climate change in their community.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Build and empower a community of contributors to contribute climate change knowledge on Swahili Wikipedia: This will provide better positions to contribute Climate Change and other environmental information on Wikipedia. We believe this will give opportunity for environmental experts and other environmental enthusiasts the to improve local expert (environmental) knowledge in Wikipedia

Document climate change and sustainability-related topics on Swahili Wikipedia

Improving the visual coverage of environmental topics: By organizing activities that focus on widening the coverage of quality and underrepresented content in Swahili to attract readership by adding images to articles with no images and improving them. This theme relates to the Wiki Love Africa 2023 campaign and WikiForHumanRight campaign as well.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Strategie 1: Activities Recruiting new and existing participants to contribute to Swahili Wikipedia.

Training ( in-person and online ): This will be a series of events for training to ensure that new contributors get enough understanding about the Wikimedia movement and their sister's projects, and how to contribute.

Strategie 2: Activities

Edit-a-thon: We will organize a series of events of edit-a-thon by including experienced editors in writing articles about climate change and sustainability topics on Swahili Wikipedia.

Contest: We will organize a writing contest to incentivize contributions about Climate change and sustainability topics on Swahili Wikipedia.

Strategie 3: Activities

Photowalks: We will organize photowalk events by involving experienced and new photographers to take and document images and short videos regarding the topic of climate change and sustainability topics on Wikimedia commons.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Also, we will link new participants to the existing Wikimedia communities in Tanzania, so they can be better exposed to Wikimedia activities and also participate in other events in the community.
