Activities

• Update of lists of cultural monuments in Serbia, including the entry of new monuments, their address and geo-coordinates

What did not go well?

In September, when most of the photos were made, the weather conditions were often bad. Low temperatures and frequent rain have affected the number of participants and the organizing of edit-a-thon.

Also, there were two technical problems. One of them was problem with the internet in Belgrade and parts of Serbia, which made impossible to some participants to submit their photos. Second one concerned the computer where photos from edit-a-thon were stored. Before submitting photos, the participants have been working and preparing them for upload. Due to technical problems, hundreds of photos were permanently deleted before their upload to Wikimedia Commons, which affected the final result.

What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?

Organization of the WLM in Serbia in the following years should focus on strengthening the partnership cooperation with GLAM institutions, strengthening organizational capacity and promoting competition.

WLM 2013 is a sequel to the last years successful WLM competition organized in Serbia. The main goal of this competition is gathering and posting as many quality photographs of the cultural monuments under a free license as possible. Second goal of this project is quality improvement of the Wikimedia projects through usage of the gathered photographs. This project should as well stimulate writing of the new articles about the monuments of which the photographs are gathered.

Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 paragraphs.

Both of the planned objectives were achieved. During the month of September, 2829 new photos were collected. All photos were placed on Wikimedia Commons under the Creative Commons License, which is a direct indicator that the competition resulted in increasing of free photos and enrichment of Wikimedia Commons. For some of the monuments we got the first photos. Thanks to them, articles on Wikipedia were written. In addition, competition affected writing and editing articles on cultural monuments, during and after the contest.

At the end of September, a total of 99 participants took part in WLM 2013.

Over 3300 images were collected (including photos from the photo marathon), 2829 of them were placed on Wikimedia Commons.

• Inclusion in the media (20+ mentions)

About 30 media have reported on competition in Serbia. Interest in writing about WLM 2013 has been shown by both national and smaller local media. Besides traditional media and web portals, reports were mentioned in radio and television shows.)

We believe that these measures of success are decent, and we’re planning to use them in the future.

Considering the results of the competition, we can say that objectives were achieved and that the project was successfully implemented. The first measure of success (number of participants) was achieved 99%. Although the number of sent photos at a glance shows that the measure of success was achieved 94%, we have to take into account the collected photos that due to technical reasons failed to be sent on Wikimedia Commons. Counting these photos, we came to the conclusion that the second measure of success was reached by 110%. In the third measure of success, media attention and coverage, the effect is about 150% of the planned result.

The results of the project have showed that the quantity of photos of monuments from Serbia on Wikimedia Commons was increased. Usage of these photos in Wikimedia projects, mostly in Wikipedia, improved the quality of the articles. Attracting new participants in the competition has increased the potential of usage of Wikimedia Commons as a place to set up a free and relevant photos as well as free repository available for everyone to use. Thanks to good media coverage, Wikimedia commons, both the project and the organization and its projects, once more got a large space to promote their mission and objectives.
