Summary edit

This report accounts for the activities of the Wikimedia Finland chapter for a 6 month grant application. First half of 2015 included an assortment of GLAM and organisational collaboration activities, and support for Wikimaps project. We also partnered with other open knowledge actors in a common work space.

Chapter activities edit

Member activities edit

In H1 new membership management system was introduced and we checked the contact information of all existing members. The weekly chapter meet-ups were held at https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/WMFI-Viikkokokous and there were also wikidata how-to chats after chapter meet-ups at https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/WMFI-Wikidata. However discussions moved from etherpad to Facebook groups and Google hangout during H1.

Board meetings edit

There were 9 board meetings held in the first half of 2015. Board meeting minutes can be found at [Suomi documents page]. The chapter board meetings were generally on first Monday of the month and they were open for anyone. The Board decided not to use working groups this year.

General Assemblies edit

The Spring Assembly was held 8 June at the new offices, Caloniuksenkatu 9 D 64, Helsinki and there were 10 attendees.

Staff edit

Wikimedia Finland employed one project coordinator and 3 contractors for various assignments. The recruitment of an Executive Director was turned down by Wikimedia Foundation. Susanna Ånäs continued with 0.7 FTE, sharing her time between project coordination and association administration.

  • Teemu Perhiö assisted GLAM events, when we had funding for it. He coordinated the creation of the Wikipedia Library branch.
  • Ari Häyrinen continued as a technical developer, focusing on GLAM upload tools.
  • Samppa Bernelius worked on projects.

Weekly staff Hangouts take place every Monday morning between the Project Manager and the assistants. The meetings are open for anyone, and especially for the association and Board members. (Weekly staff meeting memos are kept closed in case of privacy concerns)

  • The Nordic Culture Fund grant was extended until the end of September, 2015.
  • Wikimedia Foundation granted a PEG grant of 32,655 € for the association's activities. The grant was resolved in mid-March and the funds were received in mid-April.

Financial administration edit

Wikimedia Finland continued the use of the Holvi banking system. Using the system causes extra work for the accounting agency. Managing a separate cost center for Wikimaps and administering grants of different lengths has made the work more complex. We will evaluate if a change into a more traditional accounting system will support us better, but for now, we will continue with the system.

16.3.2015 Wikiday The concept was to have an "open doors" event at an attainable place in the city center of Helsinki (Project page. People could come and go, edit wikipedia and meet new people and fellow wikipedians.
25.3.2015 Merikeskus Vellamo Heikki Kastemaa gave a lecture in Merikeskus Vellamo in Kotka as follow up for event series Hack4fi – Hack your heritage (An interview with Heikki Kastemaa in Kymen Sanomat, a Kotka newspaper, in 24.3.2015)
28.3.2015 Kiasma Wikitriathlon The Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma held an editathon event, ”Wikitriathlon”, on 28 March. Like a real triathlon the event was a multi-stage competition involving three stages of editing: writing an article, editing an existing article and adding links to articles. Blog post At the end of the day 14 new articles were created and 18 existing articles complemented.
13.4.2015 Wikiday + Maptime Helsinki! The concept was to have an "open doors" event at an attainable place in the city center of Helsinki (Project page. People could come and go, edit wikipedia and meet new people and fellow wikipedians.
3.6.2015 DroneArt Helsinki! Wikimedia Finland, AvoinGLAM and Maptime Helsinki! organized together a maker event about public art as part of the Nordic Open Data Week. Statues in Helsinki were photographed, put on a map and Wikipedia articles about them were edited.

7.–8.3.2015 European GLAMwiki Coordinators meeting Susanna Ånäs participated remotely in the European GLAM coordinators' meeting, because we did not have funds for travel. It is important to keep updated about the developments, especially in regard to the upload tools, since we have our own development related to the GLAM-Wiki toolset.
10.–12.4.2015 GLAM-Wiki 2015 Susanna Ånas gave Maptime presentation at GLAM-Wiki 2015.
15.–17.4.2015 Interactive Technology in Education 2015 conference ITK is a trade fair focused on teachers. This year Wikimedia Finland had a booth in the event and Tommi Kovala, Tarmo Toikkanen ja Juha Kämäräinen participated.
11.–15.5.2015 Digital Humanities Hackathon Susanna Ånäs participated in the Digital Humanities hackathon organized by the Advanced Studies Collegium at the University of Helsinki. She presented Wikimaps and various projects connecting Digital Humanities and Spatial enquiry.

29.5.–7.6.2015 Nordic Open Data Week The Nordic Data Week is organized as a joint effort of several Nordic actors of open data. Wikimedia Finland hosted Wikimedia Sweden on their visit and arranged a meetup of partners, members and volunteers. [1]
2.6.2015 Maptime Turku The first session of Maptime Turku was about Open Street map. Jyrki Lehtinen participated.
5.–6.6.2015 #Hack4NO Kartverket organized a maps and geodata hackathon in Hønefoss, Norway. Susanna Ånäs participated on behalf of the Wikimaps project.

4.–10.5.2015 Wikipedia contest about Norway Viikon kilpailu ("Contest of the week"), a Wiki project based on the similar contest in no-Wikipedia (no:Wikipedia:Ukens konkurranse, "Contest of the week") was held in week 19, together with no-wikipedia, on the topic "Norway" (in fi-Wikipedia) and on the topic "Finland" (in no-Wikipedia), respectively. In fi-wikipedia, the contest was arranged by the Finnish wikimedia volunteers. FINNO - Finsk-Norsk kulturinstitutt donated the prizes. As a result of the contest 116 new articles were created and 74 images and 10 568 words were added to fi-wikipedia.

  • 1.1.2015 - 31.6.2015 there were 4 blog posts.

Facebook edit

  • 779 people liked our Facebook by the end of June 2015. We gained 47 new fans during the first half of 2015. We are not using paid updates. We got most views on 8th June (629 views). The second biggest reach was 213 followed by 183, 136 and 104.
  • We also started a Facebook group called Wikipedian ystävät, Wikipedia's friends. It is not a Wikimedia owned group but a place where people can chat about Wikipedia. In November 2015 Wikipedian ystävät had 78 members.

Twitter edit

  • WMFinland has 226 followers as of November 2015.

Wikimedia Finland has been able to gather a great photo archive in Flickr, since Teemu Perhiö, assistant at WMFI has been photographing our events.

Summary of Wikimedia in news & media edit

Between 1.1.2015 - 31.8.2015 Wikipedia was in the news roughly 50 times. (Detailed list: w:fi:Wikipedia:Medianäkyvyys) Most notable or interesting topics in the news coverage were:

  • There were 8 articles about errors in Wikipedia or if it is biased. One article was about gender bias.
  • Privacy and censorship. Lawsuit filed against NSA by multiple organisations including Wikimedia Foundation, Wikimedia moving to https protocol only and Russia banning the ru.wikipedia.org were covered in mainstream news.
  • There were 2 interviews of long time Wikipedia editors in newspapers. There was 1 column about Wikimedia Foundation as organization and its staff
  • Radio Aalto started a series of interviews where they asked celebrities what they would change in their Wikipedia articles
  • Kleio (magazine of history teachers of Finland) wrote about Wikiproject Finance (w:fi:Wikipedia:Wikiprojekti Talous/Luettelo Suomen talouspoliittisen keskustelun tietolähteistä)
  • Heidi Paasikunnas published her master's thesis on the text type of Wikipedia articles.

Wikipedia Library edit

In 2015 we helped launch a branch of Wikipedia Library in Finnish Wikipedia. During community consultation the branch was named Wikipedian Lähdekirjasto. After discussion on Wikipedia in April and setting up the initial pages, the coordinator approached the first possible partner, The Finnish Literature Society (Finlit). In late November Lähdekirjasto launched its first donation program, where Finlit gives 20 accounts to Wikipedians to its Kansallisbiografia and Talouselämän vaikuttajat web publications [6]. The publications include over 8 500 biographies of notable Finnish people.

Suomi 100 edit

Wikiprojekti Suomi 100 is a volunteer project for the centennary of Finnish indepence in the year 2017. The aim of to project is:

  1. to create a list of roughly one hundred central Finland-related articles in fi-Wikipedia and
  2. improve them into either "promising" (fi:Wikipedia:Lupaavat artikkelit), "good" (fi:Wikipedia:Hyvät artikkelit) or "featured articles" (fi:Wikipedia:Suositellut artikkelit),
  3. to produce at least one high quality interwiki article for each of them, and
  4. to arrange an international challenge in which the respective interwiki articles in other wikies are improved.

The project is carried out totally on voluntary basis by the Fi-wikipedia editor community.

We will start transferring cultural datasets to Wikidata. This will act as a door-opener for other kind of datasets in the future.
Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved?
There were no imported datasets to Wikidata so goal was not achieved. However we did achieve to begin a Wikidata project with Yle which started in H2 2015 and will continue in H1 2016. Yle was using Freebase and they are continuing with Wikidata. There was also some new open content donations from Yle in H2 related to this.

We expect to complete 10 new content uploads to Wikimedia Commons with the help of the GLAM-Wiki Toolset and/or associated tools.

We did achieve new partnerships and new open content, but our imports to commons were half of our target.
Beyond Commons we uploaded pictures of public art of Helsinki with detailed information under fair use to Finnish wikipedia and wrote articles about them.

3 GLAM events are arranged with partner GLAM organizations. Later in the APG we will expand to natural sciences and digital humanities. More events will be welcomed based on resources.
Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 short paragraphs.
There were 3 GLAM events (Gallen-Kallela Hackathon, Merikeskus Vellamo, Kiasma Wikitriathlon). In Kiasma's wikitriathlon there were three targets which editors needed to accomplish: to create a new article, to improve an article and to add links to an article. This seemed to work pretty well. However there was no target for adding images to Commons.

Interactive Technology in Education edit

Interactive Technology in Education (ITE) conference is the largest conference in Finland related to information and communication technology in educational use. WMFI has been accepted to the program with a booth.
Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved?
We were accepted and we got a group of teachers as volunteers to go to the event. There was a Wikimedia booth at the event and we got a good reception. However there were no new active initiatives in H2 2015 and it is currently unknown if we are pushing any of them in H1 2016 either.

Wikidays edit

We held two wikidays in the Spring of 2015. The concept was to have an "open house" event at an attainable place in the city center of Helsinki (Project page. People could come and go, edit wikipedia and meet new people and fellow wikipedians. The concept didn't work out as planned, because the weekday (Monday) and the time (during the day) didn't fit into people's schedules. Also a maptime meeting was included in the first Wikiday event.

DroneArt Helsinki! edit

This was the third wikiday but with a different concept. Wikimedia Suomi, Avoin GLAM and Maptime Helsinki organized a maker event on public artworks to photograph them, put them on a map, model them in 3D and make them alive! The event was part of Nordic Open Data Week.

Learning question
Did your work increase the motivation of contributors, and how do you know?

GLAM edithatons are generally useful for chatting with people who do not know so much about the Wikipedia. They are also good places to get ideas and for meeting other wikipedians which seems to motivate contributors. We also tried to implement wikidays which were more like meet up day / workshop day for wikipedians but there was little participation so it seems that unstructured workshops don't work.

Among things which are worked well are our Facebook group "Wikipedian ystävät" and (almost) monthly news letter which are both a pretty good way to publish information outside of Wikipedia's own talk pages. Public Facebook group seems to be also able to gather discussion and comments from researchers and hackers who are not active members of Wikipedia/Wikimedia projects. Wikipedia Library projects seems to be also liked by contributors and it had actual results also i H2 (eg. we got accounts for editors to bibliographic databases).

What impact did this project have on WMF's mission and the strategic priorities?

Option A: How did you increase participation in one or more Wikimedia projects?

There was active improvement of Helsinki public art articles in Wikipedia. Eg. statues were photographed and there were also list articles of statues created with detailed information of the works. Also some new articles of public art were created. Also there was improvement in articles related to Akseli Gallen-Kallela and to contemporary art.

Option B: How did you improve quality on one or more Wikimedia projects?

We added an infobox check for the death and birth dates to Wikipedia which compares infobox and wikidata values and it will also inform if the values aren't same. There is also an ongoing project to check values where there are differences and fix them to Wikidata and to Finnish Wikipedia. We are also adding missing birth and death dates to Wikidata.

We also added Wikidata check for Pan European Game Information rating changes which dropped PEGI vandalism from common to none and as result we didn't remove that information from infobox (because vandalism) which was also suggested.
