Project scope

On May 26, 2012, the first WikiGender Meeting will be held in Buenos Aires. We are beginning some work together with women organizations of Argentina, in order to accomplish with our objetive goal around gender gap in Wikimedia projects, at local level, and specially outside Buenos Aires. In the sense, some activities are done, such us the contest "Iberoamerican Women", and we are doing final planning for workshops and talks in Mendoza, Rosario and Córdoba in the next months (June, August 2012), working actually with two organizations of women related to IT: RIMA (Red informativa de Mujeres de Argentina, Information Network's women of Argentina) and the Project “Red Nosotras en el mundo” (Network We (female) in the world). We hope the WikiGender meeting will support this process of collaboration and setting of some points in a common agenda, regarding representation of data, visibility, gender perspective in articles, etc. For more info about this event, please visit WikiGénero

Project goal

This activity has two main goals:

• One regarding gathering information and experts on gender topics inside the Wikimedia Argentina community, and also related communities such us free software and free culture local movements, presenting to them the state of the art of the topic, in order to generate a line of action with an adequate understanding of the challenges, and from there, aspire to check the efectiviness of this actions in time.

• Another main goal of the meeting is regarding to get some engagement of local women organizations, specially those related to academic world, journalism and media, and IT, who are invited to participate as lecturers, reporters, and attendants.

This goal is a long term one, but we consider the WikiGender meeting will be an important start point to build any future action, based on information and reciprocal analysis of facts.

Non-financial requirements

We have requested the participation of a lecturer from the Wikimedia Foundation (Sue Gardner), in order to talk about the perspective on the topic, and the actions done or in course.

We also invited the participants of WikiWomenCamp (Buenos Aires, 23 to 25, May 2012). The venue will be provided for free by the Nacional University of Buenos Aires.

Fit to strategy

We hope this meeting, and the further actions related to them, will collaborate to improve the quality of existing articles of Wikipedia, adding gender perspective on them, or adding relevant information very well know by women, and actually missing, incorporating new insigths from the women experts on several topics who are actually not editing Wikipedia, or contributing to Wikimedia Commons, and other projects.

In brief, we expect to increase and improve the participation of women, specially of local ones we recognize as “experts” in their respective fields.

We also expect, as a secondary effect, to generate some impact over general education while opening this topic to analysis, considering teachers in Argentina are mainly women.

Other benefits

We believe we can do some relevant insight over the topic, with the lecturers and attendants we are programming, and we are planning to document and report after the event, in order to share the experience and conclusions.

Regarding to media attention, the topic has received some attention already, in relationship to the contest “Iberoamerican Women” http://www.pagina12.com.ar/diario/suplementos/las12/13-7148-2012-03-23.html, and also http://www.rednosotrasenelmundo.org/spip.php?page=enlinea (Program “Las nosotras” Thursday March, 28th 2012)

Wikimedia Argentina believes we can get an important level of attention in different kind of media -from mainstream ones, such us the journal Pagina 12, and community or autonomous one such us Red Nosotras Radio- since the people involved have different profiles, and the topic is very engaging from both sides: as a gender topic, or as a wiki-culture phenomena.

Measures of success

We expect a minimum quantity of attendants, around 50 people, and we hope to count within this people to some recognized representatives of women organizations, academics, and experts in gender and technology, science, and communication.
