Grants:PEG/User:Swedam/Ongoing Editathon Meetups in San Diego and SoCal

A problem that needs to be resolved is the gender gap and an atmosphere of exclusivity online. Online-related activities tend to use buzzwords and terminology that are unfamiliar to the uninitiated and can signal arrogance and disregard for social relations. This notion is intimidating and should be thwarted. Therefore, the primary goal of Wiki Editors of San Diego is to significantly increase the number of women editors, of all ages from students to retirees, in San Diego, with a focus on encouraging them to continue editing. This will not exclude men or noncis-gender participants, but the Editathons will be conducted in an inclusive, supportive, and social manner that appeals to women. This goal will also link already existing, fragmented Wiki groups in San Diego and Southern California, such as Arts&Feminism and Asian Pacific Americans, which endorse this proposal. A secondary goal is to establish a strategy for recruiting volunteers who can staff regularly scheduled Editathons in an inclusive, supportive, and social manner that appeals to women inline with Friendly space [expectations].

Continuing with the work we've already done to establish monthly Editathon meetups in San Diego (Editathons in February, March, April, and May), we will be coordinating monthly meetups in the San Diego Central Library in June, July, and August. These will become weekly Editathons at the Central Library beginning in September, 2016. In October 2016, Wiki Editors of San Diego will also participate in the organization of WikiCon 2016. Each Editathon will be three hours long, and each Editathon will include social interaction, such as a light lunch or snack. By moving from monthly events to weekly events, we aim to maintain the momentum of the movement and make it convenient for many more people to participate. For this purpose we will actively recruit volunteer facilitators to manage ongoing events.

Volunteer facilitators will be recruited in the form of Service Learning internships at the universities UCSD and SDSU where we have established contacts. The volunteers will be trained in civility according to Friendly space policies, in Wikipedia copyrights, and in the use of copyright tags. We wish to establish a recruitment strategy that can be repeated to recruit volunteers who can staff Editathons. This particular activity is estimated to be time-consuming since it will involve meetings with the appropriate staff from each university in addition to meetings with students.
Friendly [space policies] will be explained and implemented at our Wiki events.
Wikipedia copyrights will be discussed at our events. The use of copyright tags for uploads to Wikimedia Commons will also be discussed and used appropriately. The latter issue will be an organic element of our Photo Safari Editathons.
Photo Safari Editathons will make use of established photo challenges on Wikimedia and will also explore gathering images for Wikimedia Commons with the point of departure in a specific topic to be determined from time to time.
During the grant period, we will hold an Editathon that implements the Human Library approach. The concept "Don't judge a book by its cover" provides a framework that can "challenge stereotypes and prejudices" in our ongoing effort to encourage diversity at our Editathons. This is a unique approach to attracting diversity among participants and gathering information for Wiki articles.
At the suggestion of Marc Chery, Branch Manager San Diego Public Library, we will have a theme for each Editathon. This will not limit the subject matter editors can write about, instead, it will be a suggestion for those who want a topic. One theme example is " Notable Women Upstanders". An upstander is the opposite of a bystander, someone who passively observes an action. An upstander is someone who takes action, in the spirit of a whistle-blower. One notable woman upstander is Maysson Zayid, disabled, Muslim, American comedian, seen in this TedTalk about online bullying Maysson Zayid TedTalk. In our aim for inclusion and diversity, we will collaborate with Baja California. Tijuana and San Diego are sister cities, and the San Diego Central Library will aid us in reaching out to potential collaborators, including those in the City of San Diego who have been involved with building cross-border SD-Baja relations. An Editathon held jointly with our sisters in Tijuana is one of our dreams.
We will maintain the Facebook group Wiki Editors of San Diego. This is only one place where recruitment to Editathons will take place. After each Editathon, which we will document digitally, we will post the usernames of the participants and the topics to which they contributed. We will also respond to questions from participants and prospective participants.<o:p></o:p>

The Wiki community in the San Diego and SoCal region is fragmented. We have initiated contact and will actively network with the following groups in the Southern California Wiki community to create a cohesive body of regular participants and a source for recruiting volunteer facilitators: Arts+Feminism at UCSD: references Friedman, Lia LGFriedman@ucsd.edu, Singh, Gayatri GASingh@ucsd.edu ; the Asian Pacific Americans in San Diego: reference Friedman, Lia LGFriedman@ucsd.edu; and the Wikipedia community in Los Angeles.<o:p></o:p>

Women retirees will be recruited through the Senior Center in Balboa Park and through the volunteer programs organized by the museums in Balboa Park in which many retirees participate, partner Nick Honeysett BPOC.

The Editathons are to appeal to women participants and will be conducted as social, face-to-face events with space for questions, answers, and laughter in a non-intimidating manner (e.g. over coffee/tea and sandwich/snack). Eating in the library is not permitted and must take place outside the library study room. San Diego Central Library has a cafe conveniently located on the same floor as the Editathon study room. Alternately, a coffee shop is located across the street from the library. Receipts will be submitted at the end of grant period. An average of $100/meetup x 15 meetups = $1,500
Equipment edit
One Chromebook for use at Editathons. A volunteer facilitator should not need to use their private laptop and not having a device should not deter participants or volunteers. One Chromebook to be used by volunteers in the Wiki Editors of San Diego group and/or Editathon participants. liafriedman: I endorse this project wholeheartedly. There are a number of Wikipedia projects in San Diego that need a more cohesive umbrella to help us do more work, in a more collective way. At UC San Diego, we are active in the APA edit-a-thons as well as the Art+Feminism edit-a-thons

This editathon project has many things that speaks for it: dedicated Wikipedians, several established partners and a well-thought-out plan, that covers many of the under-represented groups.
